(2003) The Texture of Treatment, pp Arlow, J. (1969). Unconscious fantasy and disturbances of conscious experience. Psychoanalytic Quarterly, 38:1-27. The Schlesinger chapter gives a description of mental process that is useful as an approach to recognizing the way that Conscious and Unconscious processes are going on all the time, simultaneously. The Arlow article is a classic from the heyday of psychoanalysis, in which he describes how the unconscious makes itself present. 12/5/16 Free association and resistance Schlesinger ibid., pp Greenson, R. (1967). The Technique and Practice of Psychoanalysis, vol. 1, pp , and Schlesinger here gives a fun way to consider how resistance to free association is interesting in its own regard, whereas Greenson gives the classical view of resistance as something to be blasted through. Greenson s techniques are important to keep in mind.
7 12/12/16 Affect Definition of Affect from LaPlanche and Pontalis Shapiro, D. (1965) Neurotic Styles, pp and pp The LaPlanche is a comprehensive dictionary of psychoanalysis. Shapiro gives a description of how two basic types, the obsessive and the hysteric, manage affect. 12/19/16 Affect, Unconscious Conflict, and Action Kernberg, O., et al. (1989) Psychodynamic Psychotherapy of Borderline Patients, pp The Kernberg article gives a prioritization of which affect to follow when you can tell there are more than one, and what to do when unconscious affect results in problematic actions. 12/26/16 and 01/02/17 WINTER BREAK, NO CLASS Pamela Meersand and Wendy Turchin 01/09/17 Developmental Perspectives on Psychopathology and Psychotherapy Ritvo, S (1971).
