Self-Awareness happens through reflection. As a person develops self-awareness, they will be able to make changes in thoughts and interpretations that happens in their mind. Changing the interpretations in a person's mind allows to change emotions. Self-awareness is one of the attributes of Emotional Intelligence and an important factor in achieving success. Self-awareness is about understanding an individual's own needs, desires, feelings, habits, and everything else that makes them right. The more an individual knows about self, the better he is in adapting life changes that suits needs. In short, self-awareness is the recognition of one's environment, body and his personal lifestyle. Self-awareness helps in empowering the discovery process by enabling an individual to step away and examine the ways. Alternately, it can be defined as the realization of oneself as an individual entity" (Crisp & Turner, 2010) Self-awareness is "a psychological state in which one takes oneself as an object of attention." (Franzoi, 1996). KEY AREAS OF SELF AWARENESS Human beings are complex and diverse. To become more self-aware, we should develop an understanding of ourselves in many areas.

Tools for Self-Awareness An individual must stop reacting to emotional reactions- This is the first tool in order to be self aware. An individual must not be too emotional every time, by doing this a person will hide all other emotions and not be aware of it. Should change core beliefs- Sometimes it is necessary for an individual to change his beliefs according to changing circumstances. If he does not change belief it will be very difficult for him to come up in life. Quit criticizing- If an individual always criticizes himself in all the areas and will not be in a position to judge self. Stop criticizing about things and look for alternatives to come up during the time of difficulty. Have good communication- Sometimes an individual will not be aware of self. Good communication with people around will tell him or help him in get to know his true character. Maintain respect in his relationships- An individual must have good relationships with all people around.this will enable in building good relationships along with respect. In turn, contributing to understand self better. Should create Love and Happiness in life- If an individual spreads love and happiness in and around. People will start liking him this will help to have communication with many people. These people will in turn make him aware of himself. The five pillars of self-awareness. 1. Emotional Intelligence- It is the ability of individuals to recognize their own and other people's emotions, to discriminate between different feelings and label them appropriately, and to use emotional information to guide thinking and behaviour. 2. Core Self Evaluation- It represent a stable personality trait which encompasses an individual's subconscious, fundamental evaluations about themselves, their own abilities and their own control. 3. Values- It reflect a person's sense of right and wrong or what "ought" to be. 4. Learning Styles- Learning styles refer to a range of competing and contested theories that aim to account for differences in individuals' learning. These theories propose that all people can be classified according to their 'style' of learning, although the various theories present differing views on how the styles should be defined and categorized. 5. Attitude Towards Change- It refers to individual attitudes towards the changing environment conditions. DEVELOPING SELF AWARENESS Self-awareness is the first step in creating what an individual wants to master. Having self-awareness allows an individual to see where his thoughts and emotions are driving towards. Having a clear understanding of thoughts and behaviour patterns helps in understanding other people. This ability to empathize, facilitates better personal and professional relationships. When an individual becomes more self-aware he instinctively begins to see all aspects of his personality and behaviour that he didn't notice before. Self-awareness is developed through practices in focusing an individual s attention on the details of his personality and behaviour.

Where he focuses his attention, his emotions, reactions, personality and behaviour determine where he will go in life. It also allows to see the control he has on his emotions, behaviour, and personality. So that he can make changes he wants. Until he is not aware about his thoughts, emotions, words, and behavior, he will have difficulty in making changes in the directions of his life. STEPS IN SELF AWARENESS 1. Assessing one's own self-talk: The first step in self-awareness is to listen to self. An individual should analyse what's going on in his mind? An individual can take a few minutes out in a particular day for them-self. Example: He stands in front of the mirror and speak to himself about how he is looking, what can be done to look better etc. 2. Making use of senses: Our senses (sight and sound in particular) provide us with a huge insight into the world about ourselves, other people and situations. But these senses are often viewed through a filter of our own self talk. For example, a frown does not always mean someone's angry and someone groaning doesn't mean you're boring. When our mind is determining how we see things it can be easy to start feeling hurt. 3. Getting feelings out: An individual can find this hard if he is not the kind of person who likes to think too deeply about his feelings. Feelings are spontaneous and emotional responses to the things we experience. Like our senses, they give us good information about what's going on around us. Sometimes it can be hard to tune into feelings, but there are couple of physical signs that an individual can look for which might help. Some examples include: WAYS IN WHICH SELF AWARENESS MAKES AN INDIVIDUAL: MORE EFFECTIVE An individual can work in a proper manner when the individual is aware of their own skills and qualities. 1. Skill Development: Improvement projects should normally begin with an assessment of the gap between the current situation and the desired future situation. Having an accurate sense of an individual helps in deciding what he should do to improve. Often, self-awareness will reveal a skills gap that a person will want to work on. 2. Knowing Strengths and Weaknesses: Self-awareness helps an individual to exploit strengths and cope with weaknesses. 3. Developing Intuitive Decision-Making Skills: An individual with well-developed emotional selfawareness is more effective intuitive decision maker at a faster pace. 4. Stress: Jobs that don't suit an individual's personality tend to give more stress than jobs that are more compatible. That is the reason an individual must not choose a job which conflicts personality 5. Motivation: It's very difficult to cope with poor results when an individual does not understand what causes them. Self-awareness is empowering because it can reveal where the performance problems are and indicate what can be done to improve performance. In addition, awareness of psychological needs can increase motivation power by helping an individual understand and seek out the rewards that really desire such as a sense of accomplishment, additional responsibility, an opportunity to help others, or a flexible work schedule.

6. Leadership: Awareness of self will help in building good leadership qualities in an individual. This is possible because they will be aware of what are wants and plan methods to achieve them. Benefits of self-awareness Self-awareness offers many benefits to live a happier, more fulfilling and genuine life: 1. The ability to act consciously instead of reacting to people and events: Most of the people during the course of time may demotivate an individual, by him pulling back. But if the individual knows about his strengths and weaknesses he can move forward without even being bothered. This is because the person is aware of himself. 2. The ability to genuinely love self: If an individual has a better vision to analyze himself, he will feel happy about it. This is because of the knowledge of what he is good at and how to work towards achieving it. Then the person will start loving self for the abilities he possess. 3. Being authentically happy rather than pretending: During the course of time the individual need not act as if is being happy. This is because the individual is aware of potential, what he can do and what cannot. 4. Greater depth of experience and enjoyment of life: If an individual knows about self and interest areas, he will be a successful person and enjoy life to the fullest. 5. The ability to redirect negative thoughts and emphasize positive ones: Self-awareness of an individual can stop thinking about negative thoughts as he will be aware of self. The individual can take measures to overcome them and direct self towards positive ones. 6. Behaving positively instead of creating additional obstacles: He can always be positive and avoid unnecessary problems in life as the persons will be well aware of how to deal with it, this is because of the better knowledge of self. 7. Enjoying positive interpersonal relationships: When an individual knows self, he will be a real person without displaying artificiality before others/society. He will be a person without any stress in life and have peace in his relationships. 8. Being the real you: An individual can be real and need not showcase in front of people like an artificial person. This is because of awareness of limits and capabilities. 9. Living courageously and without limits: An individual can enjoy life without any limits as he knows the areas of success and boundaries. He can be happy and work towards what he has to achieve. 10. The ability to make your dreams come true: Only a person who is aware of self will have the potential to make dreams come true. 11. Ability to get to know what an individual wants in life: If an individual has self-awareness he will be in a better position to analyse what he wants to be in future. If a person can judge himself he will definitely achieve what he wants in the near future. 12. It helps in developing a policy of honesty: If an individual is aware of himself, his qualities can help him develop a honesty policy. This is because the individual knows what he is capable of and what not.

13. Helps in decision making: When a person is self-aware he will know what to do, how to plan towards it, how to move one. What measures to take in order to overcome problems? His decision making skills will enhance day by day as he is aware of his qualities. 14. Help an individual in increasing emotional intelligence: Enhancing our self-awareness begins the journey to achieving higher emotional intelligence, or increasing our IQ. Self-awareness of our emotions also helps us to empathize, so we can better understand what others are experiencing. Self-Awareness: The Johari Window The Johari Window can be looked at from many angles and provides four basic forms of the Self (the Known, Hidden, Blind, and Unknown Self). (a) The Known Self is what you and others see. An individual, typically do not mind discussing with others this part self. Most of the time agree with this view that others have about. (b) The Hidden self is what you see in yourself but others don't. In this part an individual hides things that are very private about self. An individual does not want this information to be disclosed for the reason of protection. It could also be because of fear of being ashamed of these areas due to vulnerability to having faults, weaknesses, and dysfunctions exposed. This area equally applies to good qualities that don't want to advertise to the world due to modesty. (c) The Blind self is what you do not see in yourself but others see in you. You might see yourself as an open-minded person when, in reality, people around you don't agree. This area also works the other way. Sometimes those around might not tell what they see because they are scared of you, fear offending, or might consider it a waste of time. It is in this arena that people sometimes detect that talk and our walk don't match. Sometimes body-language shows this mismatch. (d) The Unknown Self is the self that you cannot see nor others around you. In this category there might be good and bad things that are out of the awareness of others and yours. This might refer to untapped potential talents and skills that have yet to be explored by you, your friends, colleagues or managers: Goal Setting (Introduction) Every individual has a dream. Goals are the way people reach their dreams. It is usually not so easy for an individual to achieve goals. Getting motivated and aiming for goals, whether or not can achieve them, can help in improving the self-esteem of an individual. By doing it the person will be successful in achieving success at the same time reaching his goal.

A goal is an observable and measurable end result having one or more objectives to be achieved within a more or less fixed. It is a desired result that a person or a system envisions, plans and commits to achieve. It can also be stated as a personal or organizational desired end-point in some sort of assumed development. Many people endeavour to reach goals within a finite time by setting deadlines. A goal is a purpose or aim, the anticipated result which guides reaction, or an end, which is an object, either a physical object or an abstract object. "Goal setting is the process of identifying something that you want to accomplish and establishing measurable goals and time frames". Human values defined are universal they are shared by all human beings, whatever their religion, their nationality, their culture, their personal history. Example: Civility, respect, consideration Honesty, fairness, loyalty, sharing, solidarity Openness, listening, welcoming, acceptance, recognition, appreciation Brotherhood, friendship, empathy, compassion, love. Importance of Human Values Values are important to an individual for the following reasons- 1. They help the individual to grow. 2. Helps in developing personally in all areas. 3. Creating the future. 4. Helps in experiencing new things. 5. Helps in decision making. 6. Helps in directing an individual towards a specific purpose. 7. Helps in satisfying individual needs. 8. They help in interaction. 9. Reaching goals. 10. Helps in making standard rules in life. 11. Helps in better communication. 12. Better understanding of people. 13. Helps in framing our attitude Human Values and Ethics Man is a social animal and his actions and behaviour are governed by the society he lives in. Every person has values and ethics he believes in and his behaviours is guided to a great extent by these values and ethics. Those who do not understand the difference between values and ethics use these words almost interchangeably. Though there is no denying the fact that there are similarities in the two concepts but there are differences also that cannot be overlooked and this article intends to highlight these differences.

Values Values are beliefs that a person holds about things and aspects of life. These are guiding principles that mould a person's behaviours all his life. Mostly the values a person holds are developed by the company he keeps and the first values he learns are from his parents. Later on he is taught more about values in school. Societies have different value systems and people living in these societies are guided by these values. For example in the US, the values of liberty and freedom hold great significance and the behaviour and actions of people in the society are guided by these values. Values are guiding principles and when a person is in a dilemma as to what direction he should take at any particular moment in his life, it is these values that guide his action and behaviour. People also have their own value systems which act as the lens through which they view the world around them and make judgments based upon this value system. This makes the situation complex as when there is contradiction between what are values to the society and personal values held by a person. Ethics Ethics are codes of conduct that decide what is wrong and what is right in a particular circumstance. These are also known as morals and are a result of evolution of mankind. When these ethics were not in place, no human behaviour could be categorized as good or bad which is what led to the development of these standards to guide human behaviour in a society. In early phases of their development, these ethics were known as taboos that were designed to save men from dangers. Slowly and gradually these were formalized and became accepted forms of behaviour. In different societies, there are different sets of ethics though there are some morals that are considered to be universal and are accepted as such in all societies. Ethics are unwritten rules that people of a nation or employees of an organization abide. Types of Ideals In human life there are generally two types of ideals- 1. Short term ideals- These are ideals which come from short term goals. Examples- graduate from a university - Getting good grades - finishing to study a book - winning a contest 2. Long term ideals- These are ideals which come from long term goals. And they require continuous time and effort and effect our entire life. Examples- To become successful - to have good relationship with everyone - to achieve eternal life Ideals to be happy and successful in life 1. An individual is unique & precious. An individual should always be what he is and never try to change himself, either for people or for anything else. It is very easy to get influenced by what others say and what others want we want to be, and lose our own inner voice and the own way of living our life. But we need to be strong enough to show what we are and pursue our own dreams. We should always remember that being our self is what we have to do to get actual success and be truly happy with what we have got, and live a fulfilling life.

2. Strive to keep learning new things. Keep exploring new directions & increasing our knowledge & abilities in every way. An individual should keep experimenting and getting better than his own previous self, in every area of life. Competing with others and trying to be like them, or better than them, only leads to jealousy and hatred. It actually lowers our own value, because our talents are different from that of others, and we are much better than others at doing what we are capable of doing. So it's always better to be our own competition and explore & improve our own new & existing talents & be our own best self always. 3. Always have a positive outlook in life, no matter how difficult or unexpected things are. We should believe that better times are coming soon, and good is to come out of every bad that we face. Because what we believe, is what we get. How we visualize our self, our life and everything that happens in it decides how we will cope with it, and how satisfied we will be about it all later on. 4. Find happiness & pleasure in the small, everyday things we do and experience. An individual should not confine his happiness to specific people, places, things or money. Because happiness is a state of mind, and if we decide to be happy, we are able to do it no matter what the conditions, and how many problems we have got. 5. An individual should let go of the past & the people who hurt. No matter how deep the hurt is, and how difficult it is to stop thinking about it, we need to stop dwelling on it to be present in the present & enjoy your today's life to the full, and to be able to dream much brighter things for our future. Making peace with our past is essential to get the inner peace we want and deserve. 6) Trying to find perfection. Either in people, places, things or yourself. Because perfection as such is something which doesn't exist in life, and trying to find it only makes us helpless & unable to enjoy life as it is. It's actually the chaos & imperfections are what make life perfect & worth living. 7) Be kind & loving, and always try to help others around us, but don't expect anything in return. The satisfaction, light & goodness of heart we feel inside is its own reward. Besides, we do get returns in the long run, in a way we didn't ever imagine. 8) Don't let the past, people, problems, fears & failures affect you & steal your joy of living and learning. An individual must keep going no matter what, have the confidence that no matter how difficult life seems right now, he will eventually win if he keeps trying, and one day he would be glad to look back at these years, as they made him the person he is today. 9) Trying to change things which we can't control only leads to us in being unhappy and frustrated. It feels good when everything happens according to us, and we should try to improve our conditions on our own. But if it's something we can't possibly change, it's better to change our attitude and be happy with what we have got, rather than fretting over what we can't change and not being able to enjoy life. 10) Patience is the key when the times are hard conditions don't seem to be improving. Sometimes, our efforts can go wrong, and all we need to do is to be patient. If we give it some time, either our issues will resolve or we will find a new way of getting where we want to be. Or else, over time, we might realize that what we wished for wasn't actually right for us. 11) The respect, trust and love of people, having good relationships, support of your near and dear ones. Peace & happiness of heart and satisfaction of living a life we love is much above & greater than money and other material gains. We should strive to be rich in money with a heavy pocket, strive to be rich at heart & heavy with goodness.

12) Accept the changes that happen in life. Whether they were expected or unexpected, small or big, gradual or sudden we have to accept. Sometimes we avoid them because we think they are retarding our progress. Whatever it is, we have to just accept it & move on, work on finding ways to use these changes to uplift our life. Because life is all full of changes, and when we resist changes, we are actually resisting life. Becoming a role model True role models are those who possess the qualities that we would like to have, and those who have affected us in a way that makes us want to be better people. They help us to advocate for ourselves and take a leadership position on the issues that we believe in. Role models are meant to inspire, instruct, and to set a good example. Role models don't have to be perfect, but they do have to show that everyone makes mistakes and that it's important to be accountable for them. Meaning and Definition Role Model A role model is a person other people look up to in order to help determine appropriate behaviours. Role models can be either positive or negative. Positive role models offer a range of helpful or useful behaviours. Negative role models, on the other hand, offer examples of harmful or disruptive behaviours. Importance of Role Models Role models are very important in our life. We need role models for the following reasons- 1. Create your own success. While it is good to follow the example of someone who has achieved what they wanted, it may lead us to a different kind of success than they have achieved. However, their modelling will still help us make good decisions and go in a direction that will benefit us the most. 2. Get inspired. If we have ever been truly inspired, we must understand the impact this can have on our life, as well as our emotional well-being. It fills us with energy and clarity. When we meet or know about a person whose at the top of their game, and if we are inspired by them, we will work our hardest to achieve our own objectives. 3. Getting through the tough times. When we have a role model to study, observe and learn from, we can gain a different perspective in our own life. No matter what type of storms, we can call upon the inspiration to get from our role model to help us make it through almost any challenge. 4. Learn about and study someone who has achieved some of the things you're passionate about Role model provides with a great subject to explore and learn from. 5. Improve performance. Having a role model to look up to will enrich life and help to develop our self. Seek out and establish at least one good role model to emulate. Life will be more manageable and satisfying for having done so.
