2 Course/Module description: Stigma hinders and blocks healing processes among people who are dealing with psychiatric illness and their families. The course will focus on the concept of mental health stigma and examine the implications of stigma on the individual, the family and the wider community. Course/Module aims: During the course, we will define the concept of stigma and learn about sociological and psychological theories dealing with the origin of stigma. We will learn about the experience of stigma of a man dealing with psychiatric illness and its impact on the individual. In addition, we will examine the consequences of stigma on his family and modes of coping. In addition, we will discuss stigma as expressed among professionals, the general public and the media. Finally, we will present a range of efforts to eradicate the stigma of mental health worldwide. Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: 1. Describe sociological and psychological approaches to explaining the sources of stigma toward people dealing with psychiatric illnesses. 2. Explain the changes in public stigma over the years. 3. Describe different ways to eradicate self stigma and public stigma and assess their effectiveness. 4. Evaluate and criticize the existing literature in various stigma domains in mental health. 5. Assess and monitor the effects of the media and the development of the language to deal with the stigma of psychiatric illness. Attendance requirements(%): 100% Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Frontal lectures, work in small groups, exercises, movies, discussions and active participation of students. Half of the students will present in class one article - according to the course subjects in the curriculum. Article presentation will be limited to 10 minutes. B. A week before presenting the presenting student will distribute an outline (1-1/2 p ) in preparation for the subject they want to present. C. For each presentation they will select another student serve as litigant. This student has the obligation to read the article, to present a response to the article (about 5 minutes at most) and then display two to three discussion questions for class. Class discussion will be led - by students and will be limited to 10 minutes. 4. Score for the lecture and the litigation will be provided by integration, quality of lecture, demonstration of reading the material, ability to lead the discussion, punctuality, creativity and investment.
