Mapping the emergence of interpersonal values during transgression: Inputs to teaching Filipino psychology and values education ASAIHL Conference 2014, Nanyang Technological University December 3-5, 2014 Singapore Teresita T. Rungduin, Ph.D. Philippine National Research Center for Teacher Quality Darwin C. Rungduin, M.A. Ivy Rose B. Gravidez Christopher L. Devera Paulene I. Ronquillo
Purpose Identify the interpersonal values that emerge during transgression! Determine differences between the values based on the dimensions of kapwa (shared identity with others)
The Context Content of Filipino Psychology and Values Education courses Perceptions of transgressions! Interpersonal Values ibang-tao (not one of us) hindi ibang-tao (one of us) Kapwa (shared identity with others)
Sources of Data Vignette stories focused on transgression Free listing of values related to forgiveness HIT (one-of-us) Related to the transgression IT (not-one-of-us) Related to the transgressor
Participants 62 University students (79% females, mean age of 17) Consent forms were obtained Student-orientation and debriefing were undertaken
Data Analysis Free listing of values Yoshikoder Word frequency counts, word trees (concordance) Themes on Interpersonal Values
Results Comparison of the frequencies and percentages between HIT and IT Values Hindi- ibang- tao Ibang- tao f % f % Understanding Family RelaAon Forgiveness EmoAonal SensiAvity Trust Concern For Others Total f:
Interpersonal Values: IT Understanding Experiences with the transgression (act) Emotional sensitivity Less concerned with emotional sensitivity (ignoring and letting the transgression go) Concern for others Empathizing with the transgressor
Interpersonal Values: IT Family relations No common traits between the transgressor and the transgressed Trust The IT will be aware of his or her transgression Forgiveness Will forgive the transgressor
Interpersonal Values: HIT Family relations Stability for social harmony and quality of relationship Emotional sensitivity Emotional clarification, Communication of emotions Understanding Relationships
Interpersonal Values: HIT Concern for others Increased level of empathy Trust Increased trusting behaviours, belief that the transgressor will repent Forgiveness Will forgive the transgressor
Mapping Forgiveness Focus areas Competencies related to Forgiveness and understanding transgressions Interpersonal Values in Focus Suggested Strategies Values Education 1. demonstrate knowledge of cultural and moral values 2. demonstrate one s reflective skills for selfimprovement 1. family relationships and forgiveness 2. understanding the transgressors 3. Kapwa and forgiveness 1. Discussion of family conflicts and how these are addressed 2. Activities on how forgiveness becomes a moral agent Filipino Psychology 1. demonstrate knowledge of indigenized concepts (searching for concepts and methods believed to be more significant to the Filipino and more appropriate in explaining Filipino behavior and experiences) 1. Kapwa and forgiveness 2. forgiveness as an indiginized concept 3. Family relations 4. Emotional sensitivity 1. Discussion on the Filipino culture and forgiveness 2. Activities on family relationships and forgiveness
Conclusion Regardless of the external and internal factors (i.e intenaon, peer pressure) that might be the reason why the person transgressed, the degree of relaaonship between a transgressor and the offended individual would sall predict the values. Importance should be given in discussing kapwa and its central concepts of hindi ibang tao and ibang tao in topics on interpersonal relaaonships in Values EducaAon.
Recommendations 1. Use of recall of past experiences 2. Use of scales
