6 Fundamentals of Palliative Care Fundamentals 1: Essence of Palliative Care (Pre-requisite to all other lectures) This package is an important introduction to all packages. It defines palliative care and end of life care and discusses the palliative approach that is the underpinning philosophy of care for people with a life limiting illness. Dates: Wed 24 Feb 12:30-2:30 Wed 16 Mar 12:30-2:30 Tue 5 Jul 10:00-12:00 Fundamentals 4: Palliative Care for People with Chronic Illness Older people live with advanced disease that impacts on their quality of life. It is only in recent years that greater recognition of the needs of people with chronic illnesses other than cancer has been documented. This session looks at the challenges for people with chronic illness and ways to improve their quality of life. Dates: Tue 26 Apr 10:00-12:00 Mon 29 Aug 12:30-2:30 Fundamentals 2: Ethical Issues in Palliative Care Ethical issues occur in end of life care but with the right skills and decision making processes staff will be enabled to assist people and families in the best way possible. Dates: Wed 2 Mar 12:30-3:00 Thu 28 Jul 12:30-3:00 Fundamentals 3: Pain& Symptom management People with advanced disease may experience symptoms which will have a significant impact on their quality of life. In this session we will discuss impeccable assessment of symptoms, careful planning and management of care and on-going evaluation. Dates: Tue 5 Apr 12:30-4:30 Wed 3 Aug 12:30-4:30 Fundamentals 5: Palliative Care for People with Dementia People may live with dementia for many years and the needs of these people require special attention and a palliative approach throughout their disease trajectory. Staff will learn skills in the holistic assessment of pain and symptoms in end stage dementia; how to minimise the burdens and strain experienced by family/carers; and decision making skills in end of life care. Dates: Tue 3 May 12:30-2:30 Tue 6 Sep 12:30-2:30
7 Fundamentals of Palliative Care Fundamentals 6: Communication Skills We all communicate everyday but how often do we think about the impact that communication has on those around us. In this session we will explore how we communicate and what can cause challenges as we communicate with individuals and their families and other members of the team. Dates: Tue 17 May 10:00-12:00 Tue 13 Sep 9:00-11:00 Fundamentals 7: Last Days of Life Inevitably people will die and care provided during the last days and hours of life has profound effects on the person, the family and on the care team. We have only one chance to get it right and this session will assist staff in developing the skills to make those last hours positive memories for family. Dates: Mon 23 May 12:30-2:30 Wed 21 Sep 12:30-2:30 Fundamentals 8: Loss and Grief Although death is inevitable as a society we are still death denying. In our work we must face death and grief often and the importance of the care we give at the end of life and after death will be explored during this session. We will also look at our own grief and the importance of self care. Dates: Tue 7 Jun 10:00-12:00 Tue 11 Oct 12:30-2:30 Fundamentals 9: Caring for Ourselves Those in the caring professions are compassionate and caring individuals working with people who are suffering and are therefore at risk of stress and burnout. This session is therefore designed to provide staff with time to reflect on their wellness and look at ways to maintain it. Dates: Wed 22Jun 12:30-2:30 Wed 2 Nov 12:30-2:30 Fundamentals 10: Introduction to Spiritual Care Caring for a person s spiritual well-being is an important aspect of holistic care, yet spirituality is often misunderstood, and many professionals do not feel confident to engage people about their spirituality. This session will help demystify this topic and provide practical guidance for the health worker. Dates: Wed 29Jun 12:30-2:30 Tue 22 Nov 10:00-12:00 Those who complete all 10 modules will be invited to a Graduation Ceremony on; Wednesday 6th July pm Or Wednesday 7th December pm July 2015 Graduation New

12 Cranford Hospice You matter because you are you. You matter to the last moment of your life, and we will do all we can, not only to help you die peacefully, but also to live until you die." Dame Cicely Saunders, founder of the modern Hospice movement ( ). Cranford Hospice started in Hawke's Bay in 1982 with a handful of volunteers. Today we have around 60 paid staff, 400 volunteers and every year we care for 600 people and their families from Wairoa in the north to Takapau in the south.. Our goal is to help people make the most of their time left on their final journey, to help them live every moment whether they are at home, in a rest home or come for a short stay with us in our eight-bed inpatient facility. Cranford's care covers practical medical and nursing care, as well as emotional, social and spiritual support for both the person and their family/whanau. Music therapy, grief and bereavement support and life story work are also part of our services. Volunteers are an integral part of our team - from helping in our inpatient unit and kitchen and laundry, to working in our hospice shops and fundraising. Our services are free regardless of age, ethnicity, means or religion. We are a registered charity and operate as part of Presbyterian Support East Coast. While the Hawke's Bay District Health Board funds part of our running costs, we require over $2 million annually in donations to maintain services. This shortfall comes mainly from generous donations from our community. Our Values: Service with Excellence, Commitment, Integrity, Respect, Stewardship, Support and Empathy.
