We believe that providing education, training and support for those involved in delivering palliative and end of life care is a priority; and the Saunders Education Centre provides a range of sessions for members of the multi-disciplinary team and other professionals. We provide a first class learning experience and use a variety of teaching methods that enable learners to develop and update their skills and confidence when caring for patients and families with palliative and end of life care needs. 3 4 5 Teaching in your workplace - Education tailored to your individual needs The Library The Saunders Education Centre is happy to provide education sessions to health and social professionals within their workplace. These sessions provide a more in-depth teaching for a morning, an afternoon or some can be a whole day. Call or us to discuss your requirements: The Education Centre phone: education@arhc.org.uk The library at Arthur Rank Hospice holds a multi-disciplinary collection of books, journals, reports and audiovisual material relating to aspects of palliative and end-of-life care. Membership is available to Arthur Rank Hospice, staff and volunteers. Students on placement and those attending courses at Arthur Rank Hospice may be given temporary membership in some circumstances. Non-members are welcome to use the library for reference purposes and may photocopy items of interest (charges apply). For those unable to visit the library in person most services can be provided over the telephone, via or by post. The library catalogue can be accessed at elms.nhs.uk and provides information about the resources available at Arthur Rank Hospice and at many of the NHS libraries in the East of England. Information skills training and help with literature searches are available on request. These are for new staff and staff requiring a refresher. The workshops will: Consider communication, priorities for care and care plans Consider the indications of use of the syringe driver in palliative care Discuss the setting up of a syringe driver including where to site it and equipment needed Look at the different drugs used in syringe drivers for palliative patients Explore how to monitor the syringe driver infusion Consider the problems that can occur when using syringe drivers and how to deal with them Give a practical demonstration of how to set up a syringe driver Enable participants to have the opportunity of setting up a syringe driver Tuesday 10 March pm - 4pm Breathlessness and anxiety are often distressing symptoms for palliative and end of life patients and their families - not only in cancer patients but those with chronic lung conditions, heart failure and other chronic diseases. This workshop aims to give health professionals non-pharmacological knowledge and skills to actively empower patients to manage their breathlessness and anxiety by looking at best practice. This session includes: Recognising symptoms of breathlessness and anxiety Understanding the inter-relationship of these symptoms Assessment of the acutely breathless and anxious patient Non-pharmacological management of symptoms with opportunity to practice skills and strategies The concept of total pain Wednesday 18 February pm - 4pm Total pain is often poorly understood by health professionals and thus poorly treated. This workshop will: Define Total Pain - what it is and how does total pain manifest itself. Discuss and explore the physical, emotional, social and spiritual aspects of total pain Explore what we can do to help someone experiencing total pain

5 8 9 How can I help a breathless patient? 2 day course Symptom management in palliative care Thursday 15 & Friday 16 October per person Breathlessness is often a distressing symptom for palliative and end of life patients and their families. This 2 day course aims to give health professionals the knowledge and skills to actively empower patients to manage their breathlessness. The course includes: An overview of the anatomy and physiology of the lungs How chronic illness affects the normal breathing process How to assess breathlessness The impact of breathlessness on the patient and family Pharmacological interventions including oxygen and drugs How to manage the acutely breathless patient An opportunity to discuss using new techniques learnt An awareness of associated fatigue and anxiety The role of aromatherapy for the breathless patient Awareness of breathlessness services within the area Communication skills for breathless patients towards the end of life Tuesday 21 April 2015 Good symptom management is essential for palliative patients. The day aims to inform your practice and refresh your knowledge about the management of some of the common symptoms experienced by palliative patients. The session includes: Principles of symptom management in palliative care and holistic assessment Management of pain Management of nausea How to manage anxiety, breathlessness and fatigue Relaxation techniques Tired to the end - the management of fatigue/sleep hygiene and the use of relaxation in palliative and end of life care Tuesday 12 May pm - 4pm Fatigue and poor sleep hygiene are common and often distressing symptoms for palliative and end of life patients and their families. This workshop aims to give health professionals non-pharmacological knowledge and skills to actively empower patients to manage their fatigue and poor sleep hygiene, learn relaxation tools by looking at best practice. This session includes: Explanation and causes of fatigue Impacts and effects of fatigue and poor sleep hygiene How to assess a fatigued patient Non-pharmacological management of fatigue/sleep hygiene The use of relaxation and its benefits

6 10 11 The management of chronic lymphoedema Holistic assessment Thursday 25 June am - 3pm agency caring for patients with lymphoedema. This session will: Outline the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system including classification, differential diagnosis and clinical signs of lymphoedema Help participants understand the impact lymphoedema can have on a person s life, both physically and psychologically. Look at the management principles for lymphoedema Give participants the opportunity to practise elements of intensive bandaging for the treatment of lymphoedema Tuesday 30 June 2015 Holistic assessment of the patient and family is vitally important to the multidisciplinary management of the patient with palliative care needs. This session will: Explore the impact of advanced illness on the patient and family Identify and explore skills needed to recognise potential and actual needs of patients and their families Consider the contribution of multidisciplinary members Explore the process involved in the holistic assessment of patients and their family Explore the use of genograms in the assessment process Consider how to broach sensitive issues such as spirituality/sexual needs Give participants the opportunity to develop their skills and confidence in their holistic assessment of patients and their family The management of oncology related lymphoedema Thursday 19 November am - 3pm agency caring for patients with lymphoedema. This session will: Outline the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system including classification, differential diagnosis and clinical signs of lymphoedema Help participants understand the impact lymphoedema can have on a person s life, both physically and psychologically. Advance care planning Tuesday 15 September 2015 Advance care planning is the process of discussing and planning ahead - often in the context of an anticipated deterioration in a person s health. Advanced care planning can greatly help guide patients, families and health care professionals decision making at the End of life. It can include preferences for care and treatment. Advanced care planning is often one of the most difficult areas for health care professionals and requires sensitive communication skills. This session includes: What is advance care planning? Advance decisions/statements/living wills Lasting power of attorney Mental capacity act and advance care planning The DNR question How to initiate the conversation around advance care planning Communication skills and being comfortable with emotion How to care for yourself while caring for others

7 12 13 Neurological conditions End of life care in heart and respiratory disease Tuesday 22 September 2015 agency caring for patients with a neurological condition. This course is aimed at providing you with more knowledge to be able to work with patients with a neurological condition. This session includes: General overview of MND/Parkinsons/Multiple Sclerosis - symptoms and management An overview of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy Communication and swallowing Psychological support at end of life care Programme to be confirmed Tuesday 17 November 2015 Suitable for all health and social care professionals working in the home or for a care agency caring for palliative patients. Aimed at health and social care workers caring for people with heart failure or respiratory disease and their families. The session will: Explore the progression of heart disease Consider the symptoms that occur in respiratory disease Explore the holistic assessment and care of the patient with advanced heart and respiratory disease Look at advance care planning Consider the needs of the family Palliative care at Arthur Rank Hospice - an overview Foundations in pain management Monday 9 November am pm This session will: Explore the history of palliative care leading to the development of the Hospice movement and beyond Look at the development of services at Arthur Rank Hospice Look at current developments nationally and locally in end of life care Consider the relationship between the NHS and the Arthur Rank Hospice Charity Describe the multidisciplinary team and configuration of services available at Arthur Rank Hospice Discuss the referral system used in Arthur Rank Hospice Tuesday 1 December 2015 Pain is a very distressing symptom for many cancer patients. The incidence of pain is also very significant in patients with life-limiting non malignant diseases such as heart failure and respiratory failure. This experiential session will: Provide an overview of the physiology of pain, looking at different pain medications Understand the skills required to assess and manage pain effectively, incorporating a multi-disciplinary approach Identify different pain types and their treatment Explore the concept of emotional, psychological, social and spiritual pain and gain an understanding, on how these experiences impact on the individuals pain experience Discuss the pharmacological management of pain Explore non-pharmacological management of pain Understand barriers to pain control

8 14 15 Psychological support for patients and families Bereavement and family support - what can we do? Wednesday 4 March pm - 5pm Supporting families both before and after bereavement is an important part of the health professionals work in palliative and end of life care. It is also essential for other professions working with families during loss. This workshop will: Discuss the different models of grief and loss Examine what people need in order to grieve Explore how we can provide support to those who are grieving Consider the impact of providing support to those who are grieving and how to develop coping strategies How can we psychologically support families who are facing the death of a loved one? Monday 27 April pm - 4pm This session includes: Relevant bereavement models Explore the use of communication skills Support health professionals to work to level 2 NICE guidelines. Consider when to refer the family for further support Explore how to look after ourselves Embracing the priorities of care for the dying person Psychological needs: how to support someone with a palliative diagnosis Wellbeing and self-care for Hospice Workers Monday 16 March am pm 55 per person home or for a care agency caring for palliative patients. This workshop will: Think about psychological adjustment difficulties in palliative patients Explore the use of good communication skills in exploring the psychological support health professions give to work to level 2 guidelines Consider why and when to refer to psychological services Explore how we support ourselves in developing psychological awareness Thursday 7 May am pm Suitable for anyone working in a hospice environment This course includes: An understanding of the importance of wellbeing whilst working at the hospice Looking at the different kinds of self-care strategies available Exploring how to increase resilience through looking after yourself An experiential exercise within the training session Sign posting to the available resources of support.

9 16 17 The last few days of life - reassessing priorities and goals for the patient and their carers Grief and loss Tuesday 9 June 2015 In this session participants will: Explore the challenges faced with caring for patients who are dying Discuss how we assess and recognise that death may be near Revise the management of symptoms at the end of life Explore the concepts surrounding care planning for the patient in the last few days of life - priorities for care of the dying person Discuss how we support family and carers at this time Identify how we manage our own feelings and look after ourselves at this time Tuesday 20 October 2015 Working in palliative and end of life care means working with patients and families experiencing loss. The course will: Consider and discuss the professional experience of working with death and dying Explore the effects of grief on the bereaved Look at grief theory and models of grief Discuss the social, cultural and spiritual factors influencing how people grieve Explore the use of a bereavement risk assessment tool It is not recommended that you attend this course if you have experienced bereavement in the last year. Looking at spirituality: the changes in priorities in people s lives Monday 22 June pm - 4pm This course includes: An exploration of spirituality and suffering A consideration of how grief theory can help our understanding A discussion on how to help people live in the present but with knowledge of the future Some case studies to engage with

10 18 19 Communication skills in palliative care An introduction to communication skills - what do I say? Communication skills in end of life care 2 1 /2 day course for healthcare professionals Thursday 30 April 2015 palliative patients and their families who wish to refresh and broaden their communication skills. Effective communication skills are vital to the provision of palliative care. They enable us to broach sensitive issues with patients and families and to provide support during times of crisis. This experiential workshop enables participants to: Explore and reflect on their listening and responding skills Identify potential barriers to effective communication Discuss these in relation to their work with patients and families Consider what is needed in order to communicate effectively Provide an opportunity to practice new skills Explore the impact of working with patients and their families and consider helpful coping strategies Communication challenges - breaking bad news and answering difficult questions Tuesday 16 June 2015 Health professionals find it difficult to break bad news since it means telling an individual something that may distress them. Supporting individuals who receive bad news can also be daunting as you may be dealing with distress, anger or guilt. Thursday 17 & Friday 18 September 2015 & Tuesday 12 January am pm 200 per person 12 places available This unique two and a half day course aims to assist participants to develop their skills and confidence when communicating with patients and families at the end of life. The course requires contribution from the group, and the final day of the course will allow participants the opportunity to reflect on their skills and further develop them. This course uses a range of experiential techniques to: Identify blocking and facilitating strategies used in communication Explore the impact of these strategies on communication at the end of life Help participants develop skills and confidence to discuss emotional concerns with patients and families Practice communication skills Increase skills in dealing with difficult scenarios at the end of life Explore the benefits to patients, families and health professionals of advance care planning Help participants feel confident in having end of life discussions with patients and families Explore the professional impact of working with patients at the end of life and look at strategies to manage this. This experiential workshop will: Identify obstacles / pitfalls to breaking bad news Look at frameworks for breaking bad news Identify techniques for delivering bad news Discuss how to support individuals receiving bad news Provide an opportunity to practice new skills

11 20 21 Communication skills in end of life care 1 1 /2 day course for healthcare and support workers bands 2-4 Working with children who are facing loss and bereavement Talking to children about illness and death - how do we do it? Thursday 12 November 2015 & Friday 13 November am pm 150 per person Suitable for healthcare and support workers (bands 2-4) working in the 16 places available This one and a half day course aims to help participants develop and practice their skills and gain confidence in communicating with patients and families at the end of life. The course will allow participants the opportunity to reflect on their current skills and how to further develop them. This course will: Identify blocking and facilitating strategies used in communication Explore the impact of these strategies on communication at the end of life Help participants to develop and practise skills and gain confidence to discuss concerns with patients and families Increase skills in dealing with difficult scenarios at the end of life which may include collusion, denial and difficulty with colleagues Discuss the benefits to patients, families and health professionals of advanced care planning Help participants feel confident in having end of life discussions with patients and families Explore the impact of working with patients at the end of life on the professional and look at strategies to manage this Monday 9 March pm - 5pm agency caring for palliative patients and their families. Also suitable for schools - teachers, teaching assistants or anyone working with children not covered in the above. Research tells us that it is important that children are aware of what is happening when someone is ill/dying in the family. However, finding the right words to tell them can often feel very difficult. This workshop enables participants to: Explore children s understanding of illness and death and how this develops Discuss the differences between children and young people in their understanding of, and reaction to death Consider the support needed for children and young people facing the illness and death of someone close to them Explore what can be done to support children and young people in this situation Look at what resources are available to help support children, young people and families facing illness and death.

13 24 25 Massage and aromatherapy The power of touch massage and aromatherapy Tuesday 19 May 2015 or Tuesday 10 November 2015 The use of aromatherapy and massage in palliative care is widespread in this country and has become an integral and highly beneficial part of the care we can offer to patients and carers. This workshop will: Explore the use of massage and aromatherapy in cancer and palliative care Provide an overview of how aromatherapy is used in a palliative care setting Discuss the contra-indications to using massage Enhance participants awareness of the benefits of therapeutic touch Develop skills in basic massage techniques Explore the benefits of using relaxation Enable participants to experience relaxation Booking terms and conditions Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis unless stated otherwise. Where payment is required you will be invoiced on booking. If you cannot attend please advise us as we may be able to give your place to someone on the waiting list. Unable to attend? All cancellations must be made as soon as possible. You may substitute another attendee providing you let us know before the event. If a cancellation or non-attendance occurs 10 days prior to the start of the event, a cancellation/non attendance fee of 20 will be charged. This also applies to free places. Our care helps patients and families to make every moment count. Arthur Rank Hospice Charity funds vital care services in the hospice and out in the community, through our Hospice at Home service. The charity also funds the purchase of equipment, refurbishment projects and a small grants programme for patients. Over 300 volunteers working in and around the hospice are supported by our Voluntary Services Management team and a further 100 volunteers help with fundraising out in the community. Each year the charity contributes over 1.5 million to the cost of care provided by the hospice and the charity is now building a new hospice in Shelford. The new hospice will have 24 beds and will provide up to date facilities in a large bright and modern building. It is hoped the hospice will be open in Summer For further information about the hospice please go to arhc.org.uk. Arthur Rank Hospice is on Mill Road near the junction with Brooks Road (A1134) - Ring Road. From A14 (westbound) use the junction at Quy or A14 (eastbound) exit Fen Ditton (A1047). From M11 exit at Junction 11 and follow the Ring Road past Addenbrooke s Hospital. Parking at Arthur Rank Hospice is only for patients and relatives, staff and volunteers on duty. Those attending educational events are requested to park elsewhere. Sainsbury s (Brooks Road, Cambridge, CB1 3HP) have kindly given permission for other Arthur Rank Hospice visitors to use their overflow car park. From Sainsburys the walk on foot is via Brooks Road then turn Right into Mill Road. Please note it will take approximately 10 to 15 minutes and a parking permit will be required. This will be sent to you along with your course confirmation approximately two weeks before the course date. Please note there is no parking possible at the Health Centre (on Seymour Street) or in the private car park on Wycliffe Road.
