2 INTRODUCTION We are delighted to welcome you to Ireland s historic capital city Dublin in November 2017 for the first European Conference on FFBH Our aim is to take a holistic approach and to bring together researchers, clinicians, healthcare professionals and service providers in the disciplines of falls, frailty, fractures, osteoporosis, sarcopenia and nutrition, to enable cross-fertilisation of ideas and with the ultimate aim of developing better management strategies for our older patients. The geriatric population worldwide is rapidly expanding and will reach 2.1 billion by Any condition that is prevalent in the older population and which causes disability is likely to cause reduced quality of life to the sufferer and increasing cost to society. Falls and fractures are such conditions and there is increasing awareness that sarcopenia and osteoporosis are major determinants in their causation. Frailty is another emerging concept that has relevance in an ageing society and the role of nutrition is increasingly becoming apparent in prevention of functional deterioration in this population. Research in these fields has grown substantially in the last few years and there is much interest among health promotion agencies, healthcare providers and politicians. To assist with the planning of the Congress, we have appointed Conference Partners as our Local Professional Congress Organisers. 3 ABOUT FALLS, FRAILTY & BONE HEALTH 2017 This first Falls, Frailty and Bone Health conference is a new initiative which will bring together experts in the different but related fields of osteoporosis, falls, fractures, sarcopenia, frailty and nutrition so that a combined and holistic approach can be considered in the prevention and management of older people at risk of falls, frailty and fractures.
