2 Faculty Senate Awards I am writing this letter to nominate Dr. Jon Furuno for the OHSU Faculty Senate s Research award. Before joining the OSU/OHSU College of Pharmacy, Dr. Furuno was a member of the faculty of the University of Maryland School of Medicine for six years. In the three years since joining our College, he has rapidly established a new research program examining antibiotic use in hospice and palliative care settings that includes strong collaborations with OHSU faculty both inside and outside of our College. This work has led to two presentations at local and regional professional meetings and an upcoming oral abstract presentation at the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine/Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association Annual Assembly meeting. To date, Dr. Furuno has 75 peer-reviewed journal publications; seven of which represent new work initiated after joining the College of Pharmacy. While at the University of Maryland, Dr. Furuno served as PI or Co-I on five federal awards and three industry funded wards. In addition to the two federally funded projects he transferred with him, Dr. Furuno has been awarded two new industry-sponsored, investigator-initiated grants since coming to Portland. Further, he is funded for his role on the Oregon Drug-Resistant Organism Prevention and Coordinated Regional Epidemiology (DROP-CRE) Network Advisory Committee, an organization based out of the Oregon Health Authority. His work on the DROP-CRE Network Advisory Committee has led to one publication and two regional professional presentations. In summary Dr. Furuno has had an incredibly productive research career to date and, since joining the College of Pharmacy, this trajectory continues. Hence I fully support Dr. Furuno as a candidate for the Research award. Jessina McGregor mcgregoj@ohsu.edu

9 DEPARTMENT OF EPIDEMIOLOGY AND PREVENTIVE MEDICINE DIVISION OF HEALTHCARE OUTCOMES RESEARCH UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND SCHOOL OF MEDICINE March 6, 2014 To the Selection Committee, RE: OHSU Research Award Please accept this letter of the strongest support for Dr. Jon Furuno for the OHSU Research Award. I have known Dr. Furuno for over 12 years and can confidently attest to the outstanding quality of his research and importance of the questions he has chosen to address. Dr. Furuno s research aims to improve infection control and antibiotic prescribing strategies in older adults. As an infectious disease physician and researcher and the President-Elect of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology (SHEA) of America, I am well aware of the need for evidence to support current practices in this vulnerable patient population. Dr. Furuno has been a leader in this area for several years. He has received two federal awards (NIH and AHRQ) to support his work in this area totally funding in excess of one million dollars. He has also published 75 papers, many in prestigious medical journals, and given many invited local, regional, and national presentations on infectious diseases issues in older adults. Dr. Furuno is also an active member of the SHEA Long-term Care Special Interest group and serves on SHEA s Public Policy and Government Affairs Committee and the editorial board of Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology. Dr. Furuno has now turned his attention towards improving antibiotic prescribing and overall healthcare quality in hospice patients. Although I am less familiar with this work, I have no doubt that Dr. Furuno will be highly successful in this area as well. As his CV suggests, he has already published several papers on hospice care, received one grant award with two others under review, and is the Chairelect of the Research Special Interest Group of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. This productivity and his obtaining a leadership role in a national organization after only two years of work in a content area, speak to Dr. Furuno s outstanding work ethic and the respect he garners from his peers. Lastly, it is not only the quality and importance of Dr. Furuno s research that separates him from his peers, but the method in which he conducts himself. During his time at the University of Maryland, Dr. Furuno was known for being the ultimate team player; someone would readily contribute on any level to support to overall goals of the project. Although he has transitioned into primarily a leadership role in his current work, I am sure he carries the same attitude and sets a wonderful example for colleagues and trainees. In close, I cannot recommend Dr. Furuno more strongly for the OHSU Research Award. 100 N Greene Street, Lower Level Baltimore, MD fax
