2 IMPORTANT For information about any of our programs, to register, or to be added to our mailing list, contact us: (603) dhmc.org/goto/agingcenter All programs are offered free of charge. Registration is required for all programs unless otherwise noted. All classes take place at the Aging Resource Center, 46 Centerra Parkway, Evergreen Center,, NH, unless otherwise noted. We reserve the right to cancel any program due to insufficient enrollment. In case of bad weather, class cancellations will be made on the day of the class: by 9 am for daytime classes, and by 2 pm for evening classes. How to find the Aging Resource Center The Aging Resource Center is located on the second floor at 46 Centerra Parkway in, New Hampshire. From Route 120, turn onto Centerra Parkway and bear left. After you have passed the entrance to the Residence Inn, bear left at the yield sign. Take the first right to 46 Centerra Parkway, Evergreen Center, and park in back of the building. The Aging Resource Center is to your right as you enter the second level of the building. Hours of operation 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday
3 PHYSICAL HEALTH AND HEALING Secrets of Eating Well with Diabetes: How to Plan, Shop, and Eat for Great Blood Sugar Control Mary Saucier Choate, MS, RD, LD, Food and Nutrition Educator Tuesday, March 22, Learn why specially marketed "diabetic" foods should be avoided, how to read the label and what to zero in on, what a meal should look like, how to keep the sodium low, and the flavor high. Participants will sample a tasty, diabetes-friendly entrée and a snack that you can make at home. Common Over the Counter and Dietary Supplement Issues in Older Adults Dr. Margo Krasnoff, Geriatrician Sunday, April 3, Auditoriums E and F, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center,, NH OPEN TO ALL - NO PRE-REGISTRATION Today s dietary supplements include familiar vitamins and minerals as well as other less familiar substances such as herbals and botanicals. In this program, we will review safe use of over-thecounter medication, including acetaminophen, as well as strategies to navigate the claims of the supplement manufacturers. Overweight Series Five-week series: Thursdays, May 5-June 2, Does it matter if you are overweight when you are older? Which weight loss programs are safe and effective for older adults? This series of classes will cover exercise and diet recommendations as well as community resources to aid with changing behaviors and how to help a loved one who is overweight. Why does it matter? And how will weight loss help? Nutrition for weight loss Caring for an overweight person Use it or lose it exercise for older adults Finding a program that works for you Resist Rust: Advice for Successful Aging from the Land of Oz Dr. Stephen Bartels, Director, Dartmouth Centers for Health and Aging Sunday, June 5, Auditoriums E and F, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center,, NH OPEN TO ALL - NO PRE-REGISTRATION Take a journey from the Land of Oz to learn about what science has discovered about longevity; the role of genetics, attitude, and social engagement; why you need to take charge of your health and be your own wizard ; and ten tools that will help you live not only longer, but better. Better Choices, Better Health Multiple sessions held each year A six-week program for adults with long-term health problems such as arthritis, diabetes, Parkinson's disease, heart disease, obesity, and tobacco dependence. Caregivers are welcome to attend as well. The workshop covers a range of health topics such as: healthy eating, relaxation techniques, managing fatigue, exercising, managing medications, goal setting, and working with your health professional. Classes require ten or more participants and will be scheduled as soon as we reach the minimum number. SPIRITUAL AND MENTAL HEALTH and HEALING The Art of Listening: Reduce Stress and Build Harmony Facilitator: Jeanne Childs, MA, BCC, Chaplain Wednesdays, April 13 and April 27, 3:30-5:00 pm "Can you hear me now?" not only applies to our hearing, but more importantly, it applies to listening! Learn more about the art of skilled listening and response. New skills can significantly reduce conflict and enhance well-being in all relationships. Participants will first observe everyday "listening" and "non-listening" habits, and then support each other in identifying and mastering effective responses. Good Grief.or is This Depression? Bernie Seifert, LICSW Thursday, May 5, 1:30-3:30 pm How do you know when feelings of sadness are a simple and normal reaction to loss, or if they are a sign of depression? What is the difference? This workshop will compare the two and list tools that can be helpful for individuals experiencing simple bereavement as well as those whose feelings of loss and grief have progressed to depression.
4 CAREGIVING MEMORY HEALTH Caregiving: The Grit and Grace Jeanne Childs, MA, BCC, Chaplain Wednesdays, February 7 and February 14, 1:30-3:00 pm Are you feeling like you are the exhausted caboose on someone else's train? This interactive workshop will help participants to redefine their roles, release the grip of stress on their lives, make self-care a priority, take a hard look at self-limiting beliefs, learn to respect their feelings, and glimpse some of caregiving's rewarding possibilities. Participants receive a take-home copy of James Miller's "The Caregiver's Book" as a source of ongoing nurture and refreshment to the soul. Worried About Your Aging Parents? Facilitator: Suzanne Beyea, RN, PhD, FAAN, Associate Director, Dartmouth Centers for Health and Aging Tuesday, May 17, 5:30-7:00 pm Many adult children worry about their parents as they age. parent living alone, decisions about more care or services, or what will happen when serious illness occurs. It can be hard to know how to approach discussing issues such as giving up driving, moving to a higher level of care, decisions related to advance care planning, and death and dying. This session will focus on these issues with an emphasis placed on initiating a conversation and utilizing a wide range of resources to navigate the complexity of issues we confront as older adults age. Powerful Tools for Caregivers Multiple sessions held each year This six-week workshop is open to those caring for an older family member or friend with a long-term illness such as Alzheimer s disease, disease, heart disease, diabetes, or cancer. The focus is on caring for the caregiver. Topics include reducing stress, bringing balance to your life, communicating effectively with loved ones, and tackling tough decisions with confidence. Classes require ten or more participants and will be scheduled as soon as we reach the minimum number. Getting Started: What to Do When Your Family Member Has Memory Loss Kesstan Blandin, Program Coordinator, NH Alzheimer s Association Wednesday, February 16, 6:00-8:30 pm This program provides an overview of Alzheimer's disease for family members who are caring for someone newly diagnosed with Alzheimer s or a related dementia. It covers issues such as how to get a thorough diagnosis, addressing behavior and communication problems, and how to find local resources. Alzheimer s Disease: Legal and Financial Issues and Answers Wednesday, March 9, 6:00-7:30 pm Listen as an elder care attorney discusses wills, durable power of attorney, health care proxy, and what Medicare and Medicaid do and do not cover. While this program is not intended to substitute for a personal appointment with an attorney, you will have the opportunity to hear about typical issues and problems that can be avoided or reduced by adequate planning. A light dinner will be available. Memory and Hearing Loss: Tips to Enhance Communication Skills Mary Sue Turner, Speech Language Pathologist Wednesday, March 23, Having trouble separating out hearing loss from memory problems? This workshop will help participants to tease out hearing loss from a possible dementia process or mild cognitive impairment that is sometimes associated with normal aging. Coping with Early Memory Loss Kesstan Blandin, MA, Program Coordinator, NH Alzheimer s Association Wednesday, April 13, 1:30-3:30 pm This program is intended for persons with early memory loss, their families and friends. Learn about Mild Cognitive Impairment, early Alzheimer's disease and related disorders, diagnoses, pharmacology, research and lifestyle strategies for health and well-being. Hear tips for coping with memory loss and managing and structuring your days. Memory Loss and Brain Health Kesstan Blandin, MA, Program Coordinator, NH Alzheimer s Association Thursday, June 9, 1:30-3:00 pm An educational program for the general public to learn about memory loss and brain health. This program covers the basics of Alzheimer s disease and dementia, lifestyle strategies for brain health, and a review of the services offered free of charge to families and caregivers by the Alzheimer s Association.
5 CREATIVE AGING ONGOING DISCUSSION and SUPPORT GROUPS Writing : A Journey in Memoir - An Intergenerational Arts Project in Partnership with the AVA Gallery and Art Center Katherine Harbaugh Saturdays, May 14-June 18, AVA Gallery and Art Center, 11 Bank Street,, NH Class limited to 12 Memory is the only part of ourselves that we carry with us for our entire lives. It is mutable, in the sense that we can rethink the past and come to a new understanding of it in the present. In this memoir class, we will investigate our past and write fully about it in the present using fiction, non-fiction, and creative non-fiction to examine what makes us uniquely human. Contact AVA Gallery to register at (603) Ask the Nurse Fourth Thursday of every month, starting March 24, Ever feel like you have become a nurse for a family member without the benefit of studying nursing? Would you like to have a conversation with nurses who specialize in caring for older adults? Join geriatric resource nurses from Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center to ask your questions and learn practical tips and skills. Plus, you ll discuss a variety of caregiving topics from medication management, to keeping active in late life, preventing skin problems, and safe transfers, just to name a few. Whether you have a specific question or not, come enjoy coffee or tea and join in the discussion. Telephone for Family Caregivers Those who cannot make our on-site support groups because of distance or their caregiving situation, are welcome to participate in a new telephone support group. Conversations on the phone will focus on common caregiving issues brought up by members of the group. Please call for more information. for Family Caregivers Two Tuesdays and Wednesdays per month,, see calendar Come ease your mind, share ideas, ask questions, and get encouragement in the company of those who truly understand the challenges of caregiving as you enjoy a stress-free environment for renewal. Participants support each other in learning healthy self care, alternatives to confrontation, limits to what you can do or should do, and more. Coming to Terms with Loss and Change Second Tuesday of every month, Join a supportive conversation group for older adults seeking ways to cope with challenging changes in their lives. Many circumstances cannot be changed, but how we handle them can. Sadness may not go away, but one can be transformed and even renewed through it. Join others who understand, share insights and practical wisdom.
