A health care professional will give you practical tips and help you form a plan to quit smoking and start to see noticeable changes in the way you feel. Our workshop is intentionally scheduled ten days prior to the Great American Smokeout, a national day to quit smoking tobacco. This will allow you a week and a half to prepare to put your plan into action to have successful results that will stick. We will provide resources for extra support along the way, and a call from us a month after the workshop to check on your progress and offer further resources. Get Support After a New Cancer Diagnosis Ongoing Support Groups Cancer support groups offer a safe place where you can openly share your concerns about living with cancer, learn from other people who are going through a similar experience and develop caring and supportive bonds with others. Information about our ongoing cancer support groups are listed on this page. Breast Cancer Support Group What: Receiving a diagnosis of breast cancer can be extremely stressful. This support group provides a safe place to talk about your fears, share treatment successes and connect with others who have with breast cancer. Breast Cancer Support Group for Younger Women What: This support group is for younger women recently diagnosed with and receiving treatment for breast cancer. You can meet other young women who are facing issues of fertility, caring for young children and balancing a career. Exchange ideas about how GI cancer affects relationships and family life. Get information on nutrition, sexuality, and stress reduction. (See class descriptions next page) Learn about Cancer Treatment & Planning New Patient Orientation Class What: Now that you know you will be receiving chemotherapy treatment, you will greatly benefit from this two-hour orientation for patients of the Comprehensive Cancer Center. Led by an interdisciplinary team, this class provides information on how to navigate the Cancer Center journey, what services are available and how to access these services, nursing instruction about how chemotherapy works, and practical side effect management. Discussion about the importance of patient participation in care is emphasized. You will also be introduced to the My Care Guide, a powerful patient resource. Please call Chelsea Hacker at Manage Appearance- Related Side Effects of Cancer Treatment FREE American Cancer Society Wig Bank What: Available to women undergoing cancer treatment and experiencing or expecting to experience hair loss. Come in for a free wig-fitting consultation with a trained volunteer wig consultant. Your one-on-one consultation includes: one free wig, finding a wig that will fit your lifestyle, as well as suggestions for using wigs, turbans and scarves. How to Shop for a Wig What: Larry Parks, El Cerrito Hair Stylist of five decades will share tips on how to shop for a wig and answer your questions about choosing a wig, maybe for the first time. You will learn about the most important details to look for in a wig, how to determine the quality of a wig, what can and cannot be done with a wig, how to get the best fit and adjust the fit, and whether synthetic or human hair is best for you. While you will not have the opportunity to buy a wig or have a wig styled during this workshop, our wig bank consultant will be available to schedule appointments in our free wig bank or give you a list of local resources. Come and receive free instruction on coping with the appearance-related side effects of your treatment. A licensed beauty professional will teach makeup, skin care tips and suggestions for using wigs and head-wear. A complimentary makeup kit will be provided. For more information, please call Chelsea Hacker at Spirituality Group: Exploring Meaning and Sacredness What: In a small group we will delve into what gives meaning and richness to our lives, what fosters connection with ourselves, each other and spirit. We will reconnect with what makes life worth living while recognizing that we may be wrestling with grief, loss and the thought of dying. We will use weekly topics as a springboard for bringing sacredness into our daily lives. Maura Singer Williams at Stress Relief: A Pathway to Wholeness What: Mindfulness teaches us to be present in the moment. Heartfulness teaches us to bring compassion and care to ourselves and others. Being embodied teaches us how to find relief from our obsessive thoughts and inner critic and enter the present moment. By cultivating access to each of these 3 centers: head, heart, body, we can learn how to transform our ability to cope with the stress of everyday life and illness and cultivate balance, kindness and generosity towards ourselves and others. Modeled after the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction technique pioneered by Jon Kabat-Zinn, each class builds on the next and includes daily home practice exploring what you learn in class. This class can help you regain your strength and wellness through gentle exercises, discussion and support. Topics include: getting back to wellness, exercise for wellness, emotional health and well-being, nutrition beyond cancer, medical management beyond cancer and moving beyond survivorship.
