Join us at the Investors Group Walk for Alzheimer s on Sunday, May 6, 2018 Canada s biggest fundraiser for Alzheimer s disease and other dementias. It s a fun and family-friendly way to create a movement while sending a message of inclusion and hope to the estimated 70,000 British Columbians currently living with dementia and the people who care for them. Funds raised stay in B.C. and support programs, education and services in your community. They also help enable research into the causes and cure. When you walk, you make memories matter. You honour people who have passed and acknowledge the work that must be done to ensure help and hope for the people living with the disease today. Enhance your basic knowledge about dementia and learn about the different types of support services, education, and information available at any stage of the journey. Tuesday, April 17 Advocacy: Your Voice Matters for caregivers Learn how advocate more effectively for yourself and the person you are caring for, particularly in residential care. Thursday, May 24 10a.m. noon Register by calling the Resource Centre Heads Up: An Introduction to Brain Health It s never too soon or too late to make changes that will maintain or improve your brain health. Learn strategies and set goals for improving the health of your mind, body and spirit. Wednesday, April 11 Thursday, June a.m. noon Family Caregiver Series Workshop An education workshop for family members who are caring for a person living with dementia. The following topics are covered: Understanding Dementia, Communication, Behaviour Planning for the Future Self-Care for Caregivers Wednesday & Thursday May 16 and p.m. Understanding Dementia for caregivers, family members and friends Learn how dementia affects the brain and behaviour as the disease progresses and the impact it has on the individual, caregivers and families. 3 3 Understanding Dementia for caregivers, family members and friends Learn how dementia affects the brain and behaviour as the disease progresses and the impact it has on the individual, caregivers and families. Tuesday, May 8 10 a.m. noon Transition to Residential Care for caregivers Learn how to access care, explore the challenges families face when making decisions about residential care, strategies for preparing for moving day, what to expect and working with the care team. Tuesday, May 29 Life in Residential Care for caregivers Learn how to adjust your role as a caregiver after a person living with dementia has moved into residential care. Tips for enhancing your visits, working with a care team and acting as an advocate for the person living with dementia will be discussed. Thursday, June 14 Understanding Dementia, Communication and Behaviours for caregivers, family members and friends Learn how dementia affects the brain, ability to communicate and how these changes directly affect behaviour as the disease progresses. Understand the impact the illness has on the individual, caregivers and families. Tuesday, June 12 5:30 8:30 p.m. Dementia Dialogue: Asking for Help Where do we go to get help? Who do we ask? How do we navigate the health-care system and when do we connect with the Health Authority? Learn how to access and ask for support and services. Thursday, April 5
4 4 Dementia Dialogue: Transitions Along the Journey How can we cope with the changes of dementia? Hear experiences from other caregivers and understand the process of change that takes place along the journey. Tuesday, April 24 Dementia Dialogue: Driving A diagnosis of dementia means that at some point the ability to drive safely will be lost. Driving is a complex activity involving many regions of the brain working simultaneously. Learn strategies on how to approach and manage this transition. Tuesday, June 19 Dementia Dialogue: Self Care Learn how certain demands can contribute to stress and burnout. A discussion of positive coping strategies will be shared in this interactive workshop. Thursday, June a.m. noon Dementia Dialogue: Planning for the Future Starting to plan for the future as early as possible ensures that the person living with dementia can play a role in making important health-care and financial decisions. Family caregivers will learn the importance of early planning and review strategies for ensuring the person living with dementia s wishes are honoured now and in the future. Tuesday, June 26 Dementia Dialogue: Guilt and Grief Family caregivers of people living with dementia experience grief and loss at many different points during the progression of the disease. Feelings of guilt arise throughout the journey and can impact the emotional health of the caregiver. Participants will learn about how loss and grief can impact caregivers as well as the person living with dementia and will explore strategies for coping with and adjusting to changes. 5 5 Tele-workshops When a Person with Dementia Travels People in the early stages of Alzheimer s disease or another dementia may still choose to travel. Sometimes they run into difficulties when they do, and the Canadian Consulate gets involved. Join Elizabeth Hrubesz, Consular Case Management Officer, to find out what the Canadian Consulate does and some of the challenges they face. Personal Planning Family caregivers and people in the early stage of the illness will learn the importance of early planning, review the different kinds of planning that need to be considered and look at strategies to ensure the person s wishes are honoured now and in the future. Wednesday, May 9 2 p.m. or 7 p.m. (choose the time most convenient for you) Understanding Dementia This tele-workshop provides basic information about dementia and the impact it has on the individual, caregivers and families. Through an exploration of how dementia affects the brain and behaviour across the progression of the disease, caregivers will learn what to expect throughout the dementia journey.
