IGNATIUS CHAN, MD Pediatrics As Chief of Information Technology for the Medical Center, Dr. Chan is unflappable in the face of confused, puzzled, and frustrated colleagues dealing with computer issues. He is unfailingly helpful and eager to teach his colleagues new and better ways to negotiate their work day. Despite his relatively short tenure with TPMG, he has lent his considerable talents to a variety of leadership roles, including Chief of the Chinese Module, IT Chief, and now Assistant Chief of Pediatrics. Meticulous and detailed, he orchestrates complex initiatives with apparent ease. He is always cheerful and a pleasure to work with, and his patients in our Chinese module greatly appreciate his bilingual skills.
XIAO-PING CHENG, MD Physical Medicine If there were a prize for the physician who works the hardest to make sure patients are cared for in the best possible way, Dr. Cheng would win it. His gentle demeanor and ever-present smile make him a favorite with colleagues and patients alike. A specialist in Electrodiagnostic Medicine and Interventional Pain Management, his work ethic is legendary at the Medical Center. Patients always come first for him, and he exhibits this devotion with his no-problem attitude through long days. When presented with stressful challenges, he only becomes more pleasant, smiles, and asks to do more. His colleagues call that heroic!
STEVE EDWARDS, MD Anesthesia Dr. Edwards completed four years of military service, earned a master s of public policy, and worked for the federal government in management and organizational improvement before returning to school at age 30 to fulfill his dream to study medicine. Today, as Medical Director of Perioperative Services and Sub-Chief for Pediatric Anesthesia, he draws upon his unique background and experience to improve patient safety and the quality, efficiency, and reliability of our services. A leader in his field and in the medical center, he has transformed the Perioperative Department into a model of pre-and post-operative care and has made major contributions to the Highly Reliable Surgical Teams Initiative in and the Region. In his practice, he focuses on high-risk patients with co-existing disease, pediatric patients, and regional anesthesia. One of his great joys is alleviating patients concerns about surgery.
DEBORAH GOLD, MD Internal Medicine As Chief of the Infection Control Department and Chief of the Infectious Disease service at the Medical Center, Dr. Gold has led the management of risks associated with local outbreaks of infections, including Norovirus, Methicillin Resistant Staph Aureus, and surgical wound infections. She has broadened the scope of our Infectious Disease service to include more surveillance of serious infections. A crusader for infection control, she teaches personal hygiene techniques for minimizing the risk of hospital acquired infections. Her energy and vigilance have doubtless saved many lives at the medical center.
TODD LEVINE, MD HBS Beloved by his patients and colleagues alike, Dr. LeVine is admired as both an extraordinary physician and a gifted leader. A former Chief Resident in the Kaiser Permanente Internal Medicine Residency Program, he serves as the Assistant Chief of the Hospital Based Medicine department, Co-Chief of Resource Stewardship, and Sub-Chief of Cardiovascular HBS. In this role, he has worked tirelessly to improve the care and coordination of care for our cardiovascular patients. As attentive to the staff as he is to his patients, he has also been involved in arranging deep sea fishing trips and a charity golf tournament through the Wellness Committee for Kaiser Permanente employees. Always willing to expand his responsibilities for the good of our patients and the program, he has just started producing an informative and often amusing newsletter for the Cardiac Service line.
HANH NGUYEN, MD Internal Medicine Dr. Nguyen s practice is two-pronged, encompassing community-based geriatrics an d office practice for Vietnamese-speaking patients. Fluent in both Vietnamese and French, he provides outstanding adult primary care to a large population of patients who speak only Vietnamese. In Geriatrics, he has redesigned s Community Based Medicine service, working with full-time geriatricians and nurse practitioners to improve the quality and responsiveness of the care provided to members who are homebound or in skilled and convalescent care facilities. Deeply concerned about the welfare of his patients, he is currently developing an outpatient palliative care program.
DAVID PATING, MD Psychiatry Dr. Pating exudes enthusiasm for the wellness of everyone whose life he touches. He directs wellness and well-being activities at the Medical Center for his colleagues, and has long been a regional leader in these efforts. As Chief of the Chemical Dependency Recovery Program at San Francisco and a leader in Addiction Medicine for the Region, he fosters the wellness of members with addiction problems throughout Northern California. Beyond Kaiser Permanente, he serves as President of the California Society of Addiction Medicine and participates actively in state government to enhance the wellness of physicians and other citizens with dependency problems throughout the state.
JACK SCHUBERTH, DPM Podiatric Surgery Dr. Schuberth is a consummate surgeon with a passion for teaching, patient care, and excellence. He has raised the bar nationally for the levels of care and complexity achieved in foot and ankle trauma and reconstruction. He is famous for always being available, day or night, whether at conferences, lecturing on foot and ankle surgery, or in Vietnam, doing reconstructive surgery as a volunteer. He has trained and mentored many of TPMG s best new podiatrists, as well as a generation of orthopedic surgeons. He was awarded the first Teacher of the Year Award from the Kaiser Permanente Podiatric Surgery Residency Program based at Oakland,, and Walnut Creek, a consortium program that he helped to create, and continues to be recognized for his outstanding teaching by various affiliated residency programs, including the St. Mary s Orthopedic Surgery Program.
LYLE SHLAGER, MD Gastroenterology Dr. Shlager has dramatically improved every aspect of the care provided by the Gastroenterology service in San Francisco. Admired for leading by example and for his collaborative style, he has improved s colon cancer screening program and has created and run the virus screening and treatment programs for hepatitis B. An excellent clinician who thoroughly enjoys interacting with patients, he serves as Chief of Gastroenterology and is also an outstanding and dedicated teacher for our residents and medical staff. He started his career as a public health doctor in jails, an experience that made him more sensitive to the needs of underserved populations. He continues to work with underserved populations by volunteering one day a month at the San Francisco General Hospital as a clinical faculty volunteer.
JAMES STRICKER, MD Surgery Dr. Stricker is loved and admired by his colleagues, residents, and patients alike for his exceptional surgical skills, his gifted teaching, and his calm, caring demeanor. An accomplished colorectal surgeon, he serves patients from throughout the Northern California Region, taking on the most technically challenging cases. A popular leader at the San Francisco Medical Center, he served until recently as Chief of the General Surgery Department. When he isn t in the operating room, mentoring residents, or seeing patients, he may be found in his band at medical center events, playing tenor saxophone with his brother, another TPMG physician and leader.
ANNE TANG, MD Internal Medicine Dr. Tang is not only the Chief of Pharmacy and Therapeutics, she is also a tireless advocate for our Chinese-speaking members. A skilled and energetic leader, she helped establish the Chinese Bilingual, Bicultural Adult Primary Care module in, which has become a national model for providing care to a linguistically and culturally diverse population. She embraces and practices the Kaiser Permanente mission of serving and improving the health of the community by organizing community health fairs and by providing health tips in a major Chinese language newspaper, on the radio, and on TV. She recently worked with the American Heart Association s Go Red for Women campaign to help reach out to the Chinese community.
