RESEARCH AND CREATIVE ACTIVITIES RESEARCH AWARDS and GRANTS CURRENT 6/2014-9/2017 Stroke Prevention/Intervention Research Program (NINDS U54): Project 2 - Racial Disparities in Ischemic Stroke and Atherosclerotic Risk Factors in the Young (Fullerton H) U54 NS S1 (Sidney S) Role: Co-Principal Investigator of Project 2 5
6 Description: The goal of this proposed award is to evaluate the racial disparities in the incidence of stroke in the young, and the potential contribution of atherosclerotic risk factors to these disparities. This is a subproject of a larger U54 grant which has been jointly proposed between Kaiser Permanente Northern California and UCSF, with Dr. Stephen Sidney as the PI for the overall grant. My funding as part of this project will begin in 6/2013 and continue through 9/30/ ASA/Bugher Foundation Stroke Collaborative Research Center 14BFSC (Traystman RJ) Role: CO-I, Co-Director of Bugher Fellowship Description: This project consists of four projects: a fellowship, two basic science projects, and a clinical project. The center will train four scientists in pediatric and young adult stroke through a two year fellowship offering. In addition there are three scientific projects examining plasticity in the developing brain; two basic (PI's: Macklin and Herson) and one clinical (PI: Bernard). COMPLETED 8/2013-7/2014 University of Colorado Clinical Effectiveness and Patient Safety Small Grants Program: Integrated Group Stroke Clinic Role: Principal Investigator Description: This is a small grant for quality improvement research in which we are developing a clinic to see patients with ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke in a group visit setting, including a support group component, an educational component, as well as the medical aspect of the visit. Currently, all visits are run by a vascular neurologist, and a pharmacist also meets with patients. The goal of the clinic is that we will begin to make it more multidisciplinary and include other providers, such as therapists, cognitive-behavioural neurologists and social workers. We are collecting data on patient satisfaction, provider satisfaction, and cost effectiveness American Academy of Neurology Foundation Clinical Research Training Fellowship in Stroke: Pilot randomized controlled trial of a nursing protocol to avoid Foley catheter placement in stroke patients Role: PI Description: This is a career development grant providing salary support and support for didactics. The project is a pilot randomized trial of a nursing protocol to avoid Foley catheter use in patients with stroke. The long term goal is to develop a feasible protocol which will decrease catheter use in patients with stroke, and potentially decrease catheterassociated UTI and improve stroke outcomes. 6
7 American Heart Association Western States Affiliate Clinical Research Program Award: Bladder Catheterization and Urinary Tract Infections Complicating Stroke Role: PI Description: This is a pilot randomized trial of a nursing protocol to avoid Foley catheter use in patients with stroke. The long term goal is to develop a feasible protocol which will decrease catheter use in patients with stroke, and potentially decrease catheter-associated UTI and improve stroke outcomes NINDS 5U01NS POINT: Platelet-Oriented Inhibition in New TIA and Minor Ischemic Stroke (Johnston SC) Role: Physician Project Manager from 12/ /2012 Description: To evaluate clopidogrel as a treatment to reduce risk of stroke and heart attack after TIA in patients also prescribed aspirin. The aim is to substantially reduce the stroke burden in the US and substantially reduce cost of care. PEER REVIEWED PUBLICATIONS: 1. Poisson, SN, Gelb, DJ, Oh, MFS, and Gruppen, LJ.
