APPDE Association of PHYSIOTHERAPISTS in PARKINSON s Disease EUROPE AKAMP Association EUROPE des KINÉSITHÉRAPEUTES pour la Maladie de PARKINSON info@appde.eu N e w s l e t t e r APPDE at WPT 2011 In June Amsterdam hosted World Physical Therapy 2011, the 16 th International World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT) congress, an important event held every four years. It provided an opportunity for APPDE members to meet and catch up with each other s news. The APPDE presented a poster (see page 3) which focused on the APPDE s role in knowledge transfer, facilitating conversations between clinicians, researchers and educators about the physical management of Parkinson s. Numerous interesting conversations were started, and contacts were made with countries that might link with the European Guidelines project (see page 5). The APPDE was represented by Mariella Graziano at a neuroscience networking session led by the International Neurological Physical Therapy Association (INPA), a group linked to the WCPT. The APPDE and INPA share many aspirations in common, for example knowledge transfer and capacity building in neurological physiotherapy practice. The two organizations are going to explore how they can build links between them to pursue these objectives. Dates for your diary Dublin, Ireland. June th International Congress of Parkinson s Disease and Movement Disorders Montreal, Canada. October 1-4. The Third World Parkinson Congress

There was a strong sense of camaraderie amongst the APPDE members attending WPT We were able to: Support each other s presentations, even those not presenting specifically for the APPDE. Anna was awarded a certificate for her poster about using art and poetry in the teaching of Parkinson s to physiotherapy students. You can find the abstract and poster at this link ( Look under Education, Methods of Teaching and Learning, SI-PO Wed. Network and met colleagues. For example, Mariella was able to introduce people from her working days in the United Kingdom to the work of the Association, strengthening links with the APPDE and colleagues across Europe. Anna was pleased to meet a colleague from the Neuromotor and Cognitive Rehabilitation Research Centre at the University of Verona, who she had met in 2010 when she spoke about the European Guidelines initiative in Italy. Friendship was renewed with valued Friends of the Association from around the world. Socialize together. We had a lovely meal with available members of the APPDE, which enabled us to welcome potential new members to the Association. Mariella, Anna and Elisa met up at the reception for members of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. Visit stands people were officiating at, for example Bhanu was representing the International Association of Physical Therapists working with Older People (IPTOP), a sub-group of the WCPT. APPDE Board members: Mariella Graziano (President), Fiona Lindop (Vice-President), Anna Jones (Treasurer), Bhanu Ramaswamy (Membership Secretary), Marcelle Hubert, Marten Munneke.

Parkinson s Day Royal Dutch Society for Physical Therapy Alongside WPT 2011 over 20 Satellite Educational Sessions were organized. One of these, a full day program on 24 June, was fully focused on Parkinson s disease. The day was initiated and organised by Dr. Samyra Keus and Dr. Marten Munneke who both work at ParkinsonNet (Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre, NL). These two members of the APPDE invited experts in the field of Parkinson s and physiotherapy from all over the world. All agreed to share their knowledge and experiences! Over fifty physiotherapists from Europe to the USA, from Australia to Africa participated. It was a wonderful day with interesting presentations, fruitful discussions and a wonderful possibility to share knowledge experiences with colleagues from all over the world. The speakers shared their latest research results on medical treatment (Prof. Bastiaan Bloem), Parkinson s quality of life determinants (Prof. Meg Morris), falls (Prof. Margaret Mak, Dr. Victoria Goodwin and Prof. Ann Ashburn), cueing (Prof. Alice Nieuwboer and Dr Erwin van Wegen), cognitive movement strategies (Dr. Yvo Kamsma), muscle strengthening (Dr. Lee Dibble) and motor learning (Prof. Lynn Rochester). In addition, future perspectives were discussed on research in this field (Prof Gert Kwakkel and Dr. Mark Hirsch), the organization of care (Dr. Maarten Nijkrake) and the 1st European guideline (Dr. Samyra Keus). Occupational Therapy for Parkinson s This paper offers an interesting and informative baseline description of what occupational therapy can offer people with Parkinson s: Jelka Jansa, Ana Aragon and Åsa Lundgren-Nilsson (2011) How People Living with Parkinson's Disease in Four European Countries View Occupational Therapy. 4 European Parkinson s Disease Association link The EPDA Plus magazine is now posted to APPDE members who wish to receive a copy in English. It is also available to download in French, German, Italian and Spanish on line at: Note: if you have not received your copy please contact Mariella Graziano at: mariela@pt.lu

APPDE Website Highlights The membership section has been extended: A section on benefits about joining the APPDE is now available in English and Italian. New members can now join on line. We thank our webmaster and Bhanu for their work on this. Some sections of the Practical Guidelines for Physiotherapy in Parkinson s Disease DVD (order form available on the website) are available in French on request. Further translations of these sections are needed to broaden the reach of the DVD. If you would like to contribute please contact: mariela@pt.lu There is a new website page to keep everyone up to date with developments on the European Guidelines for Physiotherapy in Parkinson s project. The European guideline will be available in Dr. Samyra Keus and Dr. Marten Munneke are project leaders to the development process. The project, initiated with financial support from the Dutch physiotherapy association (KNGF), is unique. No less than 19 national physiotherapy associations in Europe collaborate to make 1 guideline for all. All participating associations are represented in either the Writing Group, the Reading Group or the Review Panel. And, of high importance, so are persons with Parkinson s. The APPDE is represented on the steering group. The current KNGF-guideline (see APPDE website) is the starting point for the development, supplemented with information about barriers and facilitators in current care gained through a web-based survey. For this survey over 10,000 randomly selected physiotherapists within Europe were asked to participate. The last results are currently being collated. More information on the guideline development, including the survey, can be found on the guidelines page of the APPDE website. A big thank you to: Elisa Pelosin, who provided us with the Italian translation on the advantages to join the APPDE. Marcelle Hubert who did the French translation of some of DVD sections

The only physiotherapist, Fiona will advise the society on professional issues, be an ambassador for the organisation and mentor colleagues. Fiona is also heading an audit of the UK NICE Parkinson s guidelines which will shine a light on physiotherapy provision across the UK. It will highlight if therapists are using the UK adaptation of the 2004 Dutch guidelines fourquick reference cards. Working with the Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) Association, Fiona is devising a care pathway to guide the commissioning of services for this client group. Exercises and Strategies for Mobility in Parkinson s Disease Erwin van Wegen, Ingrid Burgers and Cees de Goede have co-authored a book for people with Parkinson s entitled Mobility in Parkinson s Disease.
