Follow this format for each person. DO NOT EXCEED FIVE PAGES. NAME: Kincl, Laurel Denise era COMMONS USER NAME (credential, e.g., agency login): lkincl06 POSITION TITLE: Assistant Professor of Environmental and Occupational Health EDUCATION/TRAINING (Begin with baccalaureate or other initial professional education, such as nursing, include postdoctoral training and residency training if applicable. Add/delete rows as necessary.) INSTITUTION AND LOCATION DEGREE (if applicable) Completion Date MM/YYYY FIELD OF STUDY Texas A&M University, College Station, TX B.S. 05/1993 Bioengineering University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, OH M.S. 06/1998 Industrial Hygiene University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, OH Ph.D. 06/2002 Occupational Safety & Ergonomics A. Personal Statement My training in engineering, industrial hygiene and occupational safety/ergonomics provides an excellent research foundation. My experience of more than 13 years of experience in research, outreach, and educational programs related to environmental and occupational health and safety has allowed me to apply my expertise in a variety of workplaces. My research focusses on quantifying, communicating, and controlling occupational and environmental exposures to health and safety hazards with the goal to reduce adverse health outcomes with targeted interventions. Before beginning my current tenure track academic position, I had research associate and fellow positions. The experience I gained in those positions is serving me well as I now have excellent research collaborations and funded projects. As PI or co-investigator on several NIH and CDC funded grants, I am currently working with and have completed research in a variety of high risk industries including commercial fishing, construction and health care. I currently am PI on a current injury prevention project with one of the fleets, the Dungeness Crab Fleet, in the Pacific Northwest so have experience working with the commercial fishing industry in this region and with the interdisciplinary team. C. Contribution to Science 1. Injury/Safety Assessment My research on quantifying injury and safety risk began in my graduate studies. More recently I have collaborated on measuring non-fatal injury risk in the commercial fishing industry. Little research has previously been conducted on commercial fishing non-fatal injuries and I am now leading research to build
3 capacity for injury surveillance in this high risk industry. These findings are leading to the identification of targeted interventions. a. Lucas D, Kincl L, Bovbjerg V, Lincoln J, Branscum A. My research to this end can be described by the exposure. My earlier work informed ergonomics research by assessing shoulder and low back biomechanics for injury risk quantification. I have also contributed to international exposure assessment efforts by publishing a chemical job exposure matrix that has been used in the largest brain cancer case-control study. Most recently, I have contributed to the development and novel chemical exposure assessment platform, which has far reaching implications. a. O'Connell SG, Kincl LD, Anderson KA. Research Support Ongoing Research Support U54 OH /01/ /30/2016 CDC/NIOSH Pacific Northwest Agricultural Safety and Health Center Small Grant Non-fatal injuries among commercial fishing workers in Alaska, Washington, and Oregon (Kincl) This project will fill the gap in non-fatal injury data on commercial fishermen in Alaska, Washington, and Oregon during This project will provide estimates of the reported non-fatal occupational injuries among commercial fishermen, identify high-risk work processes, and identify vulnerable workers. U01 OH /01/ /31/2017 CDC/NIOSH Injury Prevention in the West Coast Dungeness Crab Fleet (Kincl) This research-to-practice project will measure the risk of non-fatal injuries in the West coast Dungeness crab fleet, characterize the hazards, develop targeted injury prevention strategies and test injury prevention interventions. U01 OH /01/ /31/2018 CDC/NIOSH Protecting the Logging Workforce: Development of Innovative Logging Techniques for a Safer Working Environment (Boston) This project seeks to facilitate safe operation of newer logging systems that reduce logger exposure to risky situations by means of field trials, evaluation of improved safety, development of operational guidelines based on engineering principles, and an educational outreach program to stakeholders. Role: Co-I U60 OH /01/2014-8/31/2019 CDC/NIOSH - National Center for Construction Safety and Health (Stafford) Safety Voice for Ergonomics (Kincl with PI Anton at EWU) The main objective of the project is to develop, implement, test, and disseminate a novel program entitled Safety Voice for Ergonomics (SAVE) by integrating the program into current masonry apprenticeship training to improve knowledge and attitude about ergonomics, and communication skills about ergonomics leading to adoption of ergonomic solutions that reduce musculoskeletal disorders and enhance worker safety.
5 R21 ES /01/ /30/2019 NIEHS (Anderson) Personal Environmental Exposure Assessment using Wristbands for Epidemiological Studies in Disadvantaged Communities This research will introduce an innovative approach to environmental exposure assessment. New passive wristband samplers will be used to measure exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with new analytical chemistry techniques to identify the constituents of those exposures. We will assess the added value of the wristband compared to conventional exposure assessments within two ongoing studies of asthma in a cohort of women and their children in New York City and community members in an industrial neighborhood in Eugene, Oregon. Completed Research Support EHSC Supplement (NIEHS) 09/28/ /31/2014 Anderson, Kincl and Haynes (Co-PIs, EHSC PI-Beckman) Effects of Unconventional Gas Drilling (UGD) on Air Quality in Rural Appalachian Ohio. This multi-disciplinary team will provide essential baseline data on air quality in rural Appalachian counties that are permitted for UGD, characterizing top priority contaminants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene using state of the art passive sampling techniques. EHSC Pilot (NIEHS) 01/01/ /31/2014 Anderson, Kincl, Peterson, Scaffidi (Co-PIs, EHSC PI-Beckman) Mobile Exposure Device: Tool and Method Development The mobile exposure device (MED) is integrated personal environmental exposure tools coupled with software which will link health data with location and chemical exposure. The MED is being developed and testing with community engagement with a local environmental justice group.
