2 WELCOME Dr. O. P. Sharma Organizing Secretary Geriatric Society of India, an NGO, has been spreading the awareness of Geriatrics in the medical as well as paramedical community. To update the Geriatric caregivers (Doctors, Nurses and Paramedics), the Society has done Regional, National and International Conferences. The International Conferences on Geriatrics and Gerontology in the years 1999, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008 and 2010, 2011 & 2012 have been landmarks in the field of updating Indian medicos about the innovations in the field of geriatric medicine. The 10 th International Congress on Geriatric care is being organized at the beautiful Hotel Clarion, New Delhi. This will be a congregation of Geriatricians, Super specialists Physicians, Family Physicians and care givers in addition to paramedics. The need based scientific programme is being carefully planned by our Advisors and Scientific Coordinators. The faculty has been drawn from International and National experts. The faculty will update on comprehensive care of elderly. There will be ample opportunity for interaction between faculty and delegates. The festive season and wonderful weather of November will give the organizers an opportunity to offer the delegates, social feast and sight seeing in and around Delhi. I invite you to join the conference, participate actively and share your views. No wonder, proportionately the number of people suffering from cardiac problems has gone high. These may due to diseases in coronaries, myocardium, conduction system or in valves. Apart from ageing other factors are malnutrion, life style, physical inactivity & stress. With recent advancement in medical sciences all above diseases are manageable without any age bar. I welcome and request my colleagues / Geriatric care givers to interact, and subsequently pass on the benefits of newer technologies to their patients.
3 Dr. M.V. Jali President GSI Currently, India has the second largest elderly population in the World. Geriatric Care is a specialized emerging branch of Medicine in India. Ageing is not preventable, but frailty & some diseases that affect older adults are preventable. It is my utmost pleasure to highlight that the Geriatrics Society of India will host its GSICON Annual Conference of Geriatric Society of India on 16 th and 17 th of November, This 10 th International Congress on Geriatric Care (GSICON) cum Annual Scientific Meeting will be held at the eye-catching Hotel Clarion, New Delhi. The GSICON-2103 is an annual event which attracts eminent local and overseas geriatricians and gerontologists to participate. Unique resource information will be discussed on topics from Genetics to New Therapies of Clinical Developments in Geriatric Care by renowned Scientists and pioneers in Medical, Dental, Nursing, Pharmacy and Physiotherapy from different parts of India and abroad I am confident that GSICON 2013 would create an excellent platform to enlighten our participants with new insights in the care of the elderly, to improve on our own healthcare services and to establish clear directions in meeting those impeding challenges in the years to come. After the scientific program, the delegates will also have a chance to experience some of the India s best attractions as well as learning about the city s captivating history. The International thinking which the Geriatric Society of India (GSI) jointly with Influenza Foundation of India (IFI) provides an unlimited opportunity to exchange thinking views, and I wish sincerely a great success in all our deliberations. The GSI in the past has improved our understanding which was long wanted. Viral infections in the past 3-4 decades have opened newer vista to understand the disease complexity. Among respiratory viruses, influenza plays an important role in the old adult age group. The infection not only complicates the existing diseases which leads to large morbidity & mortality. It has been a right step for the GSI to adopt Influenza Vaccine in elderly. This will not only prevent and reduce disease complication, but as well as provide protection during the prevalence period. With seasonal greetings and good wishes for a very successful deliberation during the conference time; I am sure each one of us will returns home with enriched knowledge to make the Geriatric population happy & healthy.
