2 Drew Erhardt, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology, Pepperdine University, Malibu, CA Title Apps, Tablets, & Psychotherapy: Integrating Technology to Improve Your Practice & Enhance Client Outcomes ABSTRACT Syllabus Numerous technologies have the potential to enhance the efficiency and efficacy of psychotherapy. This presentation aims to increase clinicians awareness of core technologies applicable to practice, appreciation of the benefits of adopting such technologies, and skills in effectively integrating them in their clinical work. Despite the rapid proliferation of technologies with the potential to enhance the efficiency and efficacy of psychotherapy, psychologists have been slow to integrate technology into everyday clinical practice. This presentation aims to increase clinicians awareness of these technologies as well as their comfort level and skill in adopting them. A rationale for integrating technology into practice will be provided followed by a discussion of common barriers to doing so and how to address them. Attendees will be familiarized with how a variety of technologies, in particular tablets, smartphones, and apps, can facilitate numerous aspects of clinical practice ranging from note taking, to assessment, to implementing common therapeutic tools and techniques both in session and as homework. Strategies for evaluating and selecting technology-based tools and for introducing and orienting clients to their use will be discussed. Interactive discussions, technology demonstrations, and role plays will be used to vivify content and promote engagement and skill-building among participants. Program Learning Level Intermediate #1 After attending this presentation participants will be able to: Describe advantages associated with integrating technology into practice. #2 After attending this presentation participants will be able to: Identify components of clinical practice that can be facilitated by technology. #3 After attending this presentation participants will be able to: Orient clients to selected technologies. Please explain how you will encourage discussion and interaction in your session. Options under consideration include the following: (1) Surveying participants (e.g., about their current use of technology in psychotherapy); (2) polling the audience regarding apps they have used to enhance their clinical practice; (3) inviting one or more audience member to participate in a role played session utilizing digital technology; (4) asking audience members to briefly discuss with the person next to them how they have used digital tools in their clinical work; and (5) conducting a live demonstration of how digital tools can be used to implement or enhance a sample of psychological interventions. I will be the only presenter for this workshop. No If you are proposing a panel, are you including a member from a profession other than psychology? No First Name 2 2
