3 Provenance These papers were received directly from the Department of Anesthesiology via Dr. Alan Van Poznak. c The folder listing had been done several years before the "Departmental History was written. Departmental History The first use of ether in an operation at The New York Hospital occurred on December 19, 1846 only two months after the first public demonstration of its use by Morton in Boston. Although the December 19th operation was probably, the first use of anesthetics in New York City, New York Hospital had no anesthetist on its staff until Dr. Thomas L. Bennett was appointed to the post in January For the next fifty years, there was rarely more than one physician-anesthetist on staff; in most cases anesthesia was administrated by nurse-anesthetists, many of whom were graduates of the hospital's School for Nurse Anesthetists (open ). Courses in anesthesiology at the Cornell University Medical College were few. This situation changed in July 1957 when the sub-departments of anesthesiology in the Departments of Surgery and in Obstetrics/Gynecology were merged to form a new Department of Anesthesiology in New York Hospital. It was put under the direction of Dr. Joseph F. Artusio, Jr., who had become the first hospital resident in Surgery (Anesthesiology) in 1946 and Anesthesiologist-in-Charge two years later. As of 1988, Artusio remains department chairman. Under Artusio s leadership, the Department grew rapidly. By 1967 the number of attendings had grown from 8 to 21 and the number of residents from 10 to 20. Anesthesiology became an integral part of the Cornell University Medical College curriculum and in 1967 became a separate college department as well. Dr. Artusio, with his colleague, Dr. Valentino D.B. Mazzia, published Practical Anesthesiology, a textbook for medical students, in The department's laboratories, under the direction of Dr. Alan Van Poznak, did significant work in non-flammable anesthetics, culminating in 1960 with the development of penthrane (methoxyflurane). This quickly became one of the most popular inhalation anesthetics around the world. Through its scientific work and in its training of a cadre of able anesthesiologists, the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center Department of Anesthesiology has been influential on an international scale. 6 Provenance These records were received on June 30, 1982 from the Department of Anesthesiology through Dr. Alan Van Poznak. Thomas L. It was put under the direction of Dr. Joseph F. Artusio. Jr., who had become the first hospital resident in Surgery (Anesthesiology) in 1946 and Anesthesiologist-in-Charge two years later. As of Artusio has retired as Chairman. Dr. John Savarese took over as Chairman and Anesthesiologist-in-Chief effective January 1, Under Artusio s leadership, the Department grew rapidly. By 1967, the number of attendings had grown from 8 to 21 and the number of residents from 10 to 20. Anesthesiology became an integral part of the CUMC curriculum and in 1967 became a separate college department as well. Dr. Artusio, with his colleague, Dr. Valentino D. B. Mazzia published Practical Anesthesiology, a textbook for medical students in The department's laboratories, under the direction of Dr. Alan Van Poznak, did significant work in nonflammable anesthetics, culminating in 1960 with the development of penthrane (methoxyflurane). This quickly became one of the most popular inhalation anesthetics around the world. Through its scientific work and in its training of a cadre of able anesthesiologists, the NYH-CMC Department of Anesthesiology has been influential on an international scale. Sources: Annual Reports, NYH Annual Reports, Department of Anesthesiology Medical Board, Minutes Surgical Case Records, 1st NYH Scope and Content The papers as received broke down naturally into three series: Office files (Box 1 -Box 2:9); Research Files (2:10-5:5) and Articles and Papers (5:6-6:27). The Office Files were created by Dr. Joseph F. Artusio, Jr., Chairman of the Department, 1957 through They consist of correspondence relating to the department's annual report and to equipment, research, and student electives. There are also personal papers of Dr. Artusio including three folders of material documenting his tenure as President of the Pelham, New York Board of Education ( ), and his Charter Day Address of There is also promotional material, an address and a film script on Penthrane, a highly popular inhalation anesthetic developed by Dr. Artusio and Dr. Alan Van Poznak in The Research Files consist of correspondence, notes, patient records, graphs, and drafts of articles. Topics covered include the department's research into methoxyflurane and other fluorinated hydrocarbons ( ) which led directly to penthrane; anti-curare studies and work with electroencephalographs. Much of this work, especially the research into fluorinated hydrocarbons, was done with funds from Abbott Laboratories and there is extensive correspondence between New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center researchers and scientists at Abbott.
7 The third series, Articles and Papers, consists of reprints, manuscripts, drafts, correspondence, and occasionally notes for articles and lectures on anesthesiology usually, though not always written by Drs. Artusio and Van Poznak. This series is arranged chronologically, , unlike the two other series which are in alphabetical order. Non-Manuscript Material Six photographs of Dr. Alan Van Poznak, , and one photo of Dr. Joseph F. Artusio, Jr., has been removed to the photo collection.
