1 GERIATRIC ADULT MENTAL HEALTH SPECIALTY TEAM TRAINING MODULES Title of Presentation Length Description ACCEPTING THE CHALLENGE DVD created by Alzheimer s NC. ALTERNATIVES TO RESTRAINTS 1 hour Overview of the origins and management techniques for difficult behaviors resulting from dementias and various illnesses. This module highlights behavior management techniques versus physical and/or chemical restraints. ALZHEIMER S DISEASE 1 hour Overview of the characteristics of Alzheimer s Disease, causes, methods used for diagnosis, stages of the disease, behavioral treatments and interventions. ANTI ANXIETY MEDICATIONS 1 hour Overview of current anti anxiety medications, why they are prescribed, and possible side effects. ANTI DEPRESSANT MEDICATIONS 1 hour This module is designed to familiarize caregivers/staff with current anti-depressant medications, how these medications work, and possible side effects. ANTI PSYCHOTIC MEDICATIONS 1 hour This module provides an overview of the current anti psychotic medications, why they are prescribed and possible side effects. ANXIETY 1 hour This module provides an overview of anxiety. Training recipients will become familiar with various anxiety disorders, their impact, treatment options, and special issues involving older adults. Recipients will learn skills for working with individuals who have anxiety. ASSESSMENTS (MEDICATIONS) 1 hour This module teaches participants how to assess and identify problems and side effects of psychotropic medications, which can lead to more serious complications, such as non-compliance. Participants will be guided to think outside the box to find solutions to these problems. ATTITUDE MAKING THE DIFFERENCE 1 hour This module addresses the impact of attitudes, on both resident and caregiver, in the long term care setting. This training will highlight the effect of resident s attitude toward health, the effect of caregiver s attitude toward residents, the effect of caregiver s attitude toward coworkers, and the connection among them all E. 2 BATHING WITHOUT A BATTLE This module addresses the common causes of behavior issues in older adults around the issues of bathing. Recipients will learn person-centered techniques to reduce agitation and create a better bathing experience for persons with Alzheimer s disease and related disorders/dementias. Much of the information for this module is presented in a DVD presentation created by UNC. BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT I 1 hour Overview of the origins of behavior problems in persons with dementia, as well as techniques of identifying and isolating challenging behaviors. BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT II 1 hour Overview of best practice techniques and application of techniques, which have the potential for diminishing agitation and aggressive behaviors. BIPOLAR DISORDER 1 hour Overview of the illness of bipolar mood disorder. Includes statistics, risk factors, symptoms, and treatment options (including medications). Caregivers will learn techniques that will better address the symptoms and needs of individuals with bipolar disorder. BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER 1 hour Overview of the diagnosis of borderline personality disorder. Includes statistics, risk factors, symptoms, and treatment options (including medications). Caregivers will learn techniques that will better address the needs of the resident with borderline personality disorder and staff. BOUNDARIES SAY WHAT YOU MEAN/MEAN WHAT YOU SAY 1 hour This training will present the caregiver the importance of professional boundaries, including how best to establish and maintain boundaries as well as how to restore lost boundaries. Caregivers will learn techniques in setting boundaries with residents, resident families, and other staff. CAREGIVER GRIEF 1 hour This module provides an overview of the definition of grief, cultural responses to death, various theories and stages of grief, types of loss, bereavement and the elderly, and grief reactions. CHALLENGING BEHAVIORS 1 hour This training module will define behavior and what contributes to behavior. Additionally, caregivers/staff will learn to identify behaviors and learn techniques and interventions to respond to common challenging behaviors. CHOICE AND CHALLENGE 1 hour This training module will use the video Choice and Challenge as a training tool that addresses challenging behaviors of those with dementia. Participants will view the video and interact in a class discussion to understand possible causes and solutions for displayed behaviors. CONFLICT RESOLUTION 1 hour This training module addresses the definition of conflict. Participants will learn techniques and strategies for improving communication and improving problem solving skills to reduce and resolve conflicts. CREATIVE ACTIVITIES FOR RESIDENTS WITH DEMENTIA 1 hour This training module will define dementia and identify what activities for dementia aim to accomplish. This class covers various aspects of activities, including: work, leisure, self-care, and rest. This training will assist participants in understanding how to implement activities for residents with dementia. Page 2 of 7
3 CULTURAL COMPETENCY: CARING FOR LGBT SENIORS 1 hour This training module covers the definition of terms relating to diversity and the LGBT community. Participants will be exposed to myths and facts regarding the LGBT population, identify areas of concern for the LGBT population in LTC and how to make improvements in care. Participants will also have an opportunity to examine caregiver attitudes toward diversity. DELIRIUM 1 hour In this training module participants will learn the difference between delirium and dementia. Additionally participants will learn causes, signs, symptoms, risk factors, and current treatment. Participants will learn interventions for residents with delirium. DEMENTIA Module I Overview Module II Skill Building Module III Skill Building and Assistance Module IV Meaningful Days 1 hour per module This is a 4-part training series that gives a broad overview of dementia to include signs and symptoms, diagnosis, risk factors, challenging behaviors, treatment and interventions for caregivers/staff. DEMENTIA MEDICATIONS 1 hour Overview of the predominant medications used in the treatment of dementia. This module also reviews possible side effects, both negative and positive. DEMENTIA TRAINING (20 hrs.) 20 hours This is a 20 hour course designed to meet the educational requirements for new caregivers working with the resident who has dementia. It will also meet the state educational requirement for the new caregiver going to work on a dementia unit. Participants will be given education on the dementia process to better understand behaviors and how to respond to different situations. Caregivers will also be taught skills to assist with ADLs, mealtime, and various situations they may encounter. DEPRESSION 1 hour Overview of depression to include statistics, symptoms, causes, risk factors, and treatment/intervention options. Also highlights issues relevant to older adults suffering from depression. DINING WITH DIGNITY 1 hour In this training, participants will learn that Person-Centered Care means that caregivers are committed to maximizing both quality of life and quality of care, rather than choosing one over the other. Caregivers are called to serve the resident s nutritional needs, while best serving his/her psychological and social needs. DO WE UNDERSTAND EACH OTHER IMPROVING COMMUNICATION SKILLS EASE THE TRANSITION FOR NEW RESIDENTS 1 hour In this training module, participants will learn how to develop good listening and communication skills with residents, family, and other staff members. This is an interactive module for participants to practice healthy communication. 1 hour In this training module, participants will learn the positive and negative affects for residents moving into a new facility. Participants will learn techniques and interventions to make the transition smoother and less traumatic for new residents. Page 3 of 7
4 EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATIONS WITH FAMILIES Page 4 of 7 1 hour This training module will define communication; identify views of the family regarding LTC, obstacles to communication with families/staff, techniques to improve communication, needs of families and staff, and keys to effective listening. EMPATHY VS. SYMPATHY 1 hour This training module addresses the difference between empathy and sympathy and its impact in the long term care setting. Caregivers/staff will learn techniques for showing empathy with residents and how this can empower residents and staff for better care. ETHICS AND PROFESSIONALISM 1 hour The training module will define ethics, identify personality traits of a professional and ethical healthcare worker, and understand the concept of professional ethics and how they apply to their workplace. ETHICS AND PROFESSIONALISM 2 hours This training will encourage the caregiver to recognize important personality traits of a healthcare professional, as well as understanding the concept of professional ethics. Participants will examine several scenarios and discuss these situations examining their own professional and personal ethics and professionalism. GRIEF AND BEREAVEMENT FOR THE RESIDENT 1 hour This training module will define grief and the grieving process, difficulties with grief, and techniques for the caregiver staff to help with the grief/bereavement process for residents. HOARDING 1 hour This training module defines the difference in hoarding and collecting, the signs and symptoms, treatment, and interventions for residents who hoard. This module will also identify risk factors and common reasons why older adults hoard. HUMOR LAUGHTER IS THE BEST MEDICINE IMPACT OF DISEASE ON MENTAL HEALTH 1 hour This training will provide the caregiver with the definition of humor, the connection between stress and physical illness, the stages of stress in the workplace and how humor affects our bodies physically and mentally. 1 hour per module Overview of disease on mental health to include: signs and symptoms, risk factors, and treatment options, including: Communicable Disease Heart Attack/Stroke Urinary Tract Infection Diabetes Pain Management Seizures Huntington s Disease Parkinson s Disease Visual Impairment Hearing Impairment MEDICATION NON-COMPLIANCE 1 hour Participants will be able to assess and identify medication administration problems, including noncompliance related to residents with chronic mental illness and dementias. This module will assist participants in thinking outside of the box to find solutions to these problems. MENTAL HEALTH THEN AND NOW 1 hour An overview of the historical roots of mental illness from Colonial America to treatments of the 21 st Century. Review of current medications, ECT, VNS (Vagus Nerve Stimulation) and TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation).
5 MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS PREVENTION AND RESPONSE MENTAL RETARDATION WITH THE OLDER ADULT 1 hour This module reviews the definition of a mental health crisis, how to identify a crisis, and causes of a crisis. Participants will learn skills and techniques to deal with a mental health crisis situation and prevent inpatient psychiatric admissions if possible. 1 hour In this module, participants will gain a better understanding of the challenges faced by the older adult with MR and how to better serve the resident s needs. MOOD STABILIZER MEDICATIONS 1 hour Overview of medications used to stabilize moods, diagnoses they are used to treat, and possible side effects. OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER (OCD) 1 hour This training defines OCD, the signs and symptoms, as well as causes and how it affects the elderly. The module will cover treatment options, how caregivers can help residents, and how to distinguish between OCD and other disorders. OVERVIEW OF MENTAL HEALTH 1 hour A brief overview of more common mental health disorders (anxiety, mood disorders, schizophrenia, bipolar, and dementia). This module also discusses myths and stigma regarding mental illness, as well as caregiver concerns and medications used to treat mental illness. OVERVIEW OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE 1 hour Overview of the definition, risk factors, stages, medical complications, and barriers to treatment of substance abuse for younger residents of LTC facilities and older adults. PERSONALITY DISORDERS 1 hour An overview of the characteristics and types of personality disorders, causes, symptoms, and treatments. PERSON-CENTERED THINKING 1 hour This module will define Person-Centered Thinking and why it is important in long-term care. Participants will better understand what is important to a resident and what is important for a resident and how to incorporate these concepts into treatment planning through case studies and individual experiences. POSITIVE AGING- HEALTHY LIFESTYLE HABITS 1 hour An overview of protective factors for a healthy mental and physical lifestyle, including: a heart healthy diet, physical activity, social connections, keeping the mind active, early detections, mindful practices, asking for help, and having a positive attitude. This training discusses how these protective factors are linked to improvements in health and brain fitness. This training was created by Alzheimer s North Carolina, Inc. POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER 1 hour An overview of the definition of PTSD, symptoms, stressors, risk factors, and treatments. PSYCHOLOGICAL FIRST AID DISASTER PREPAREDNESS 1 hour In this training, participants will learn to identify types of disasters, reactions to disasters, the importance of preparation and how to prepare for potential disasters. Participants will learn to respond to the physical and emotional needs of residents and other staff members. Page 5 of 7
6 PSYCHOLOGICAL/BEHAVIORAL SIDE EFFECTS OF MEDICATIONS PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY IN THE ELDERLY 1 hour This module consists of the description of various side effects regarding psychotropic medications, which can be lead to dangerous situations, including: confusion, difficulty swallowing, coma & death. 1 hour Overview of the brain and brain function, mental diseases, and the medications used to treat them. This module is designed for nurses or the more experienced med tech. The participants will examine the various areas of the brain, neurotransmitters, and how the various medications and mental illnesses change brain chemistry. PSYCHOTROPIC MEDICATIONS 1 hour In this training module, participants will gain a basic understanding of this class of medications, how they work, and which mental health disorders they treat. The participant will be familiarized with the most commonly used medications for treatment and their side effects. SAFETY ISSUES FOR RESIDENTS WITH DEMENTIA 2 hours or 2 1-hour sections In this training module, participants will be able to identify external and internal risk factors for falls with residents who have dementia; be able to identify interventions to prevent falls and ensure a safer environment. In the second hour, they will look at meal time and nutrition for the person with dementia. They will review skills they can use to assist the resident in taking care of their nutritional needs and how to care for some of the behaviors related to meal time. This module can be split into 1 hour sections. SCHIZOPHRENIA 1 hour Participants will learn the causes, signs, symptoms, risk factors, and treatment for schizophrenia. Additionally, participants will learn techniques and skills for working with individuals who may be exhibiting psychotic behaviors. SELF-CARE AND STRESS MANAGEMENT 1 hour In this training module, participants will learn the definition of stress, the physical and mental effects of stress, causes of stress, stress in the workplace, and interventions to reduce stress. SEXUALITY AND AGING 1 hour In this training module, participants will learn the myths and misinformation regarding sexuality and older adults. Additionally, participants will learn male and female sexual functioning related to aging. Sexual behaviors and dementia, as well as techniques and skills, will be learned regarding addressing inappropriate sexual behaviors. SHEDDING LIGHT ON THE DARKENSS- UNDERSTANDING DEMENTIA SUNDOWNING IT ONLY HAPPENS AT NIGHT TEAM BUILDING LET S WORK TOGETHER 1 hour In this module, participants will learn the mechanics of dementia, specifically Alzheimer s and how it affects behaviors and memory. Participants will learn skills to work with individuals suffering from dementia to reduce distressing behaviors. 1 hour This training module contains an overview of the definition, possible causes, behaviors associated with Sun Downing, and interventions for the caregiver/staff. 1 hour This is an interactive training module to encourage participants to use team work to solve problems. Participants will identify the characteristics and value of a good team and learn skills and techniques using team work to problem solve and resolve conflicts. Page 6 of 7
7 THE CAREGIVERS TOOL KIT 1 hour This is an interactive training module in which participants will create their own tool kit for managing stress and dealing with the difficulties and rewards of care giving. THE EFFECTS OF SENSORY LOSS 1 hour Sensory loss is difficult to understand. This module offers staff the opportunity to experience the loss of a variety of senses and treatment plans for working with individuals with sensory loss. THE IMPORTANCE OF DOCUMENTATION 1 hour This training module will provide the participants with information on why to document resident care, documenting correctly, what needs to be documented, and a skill building exercise to identify the differences in good and bad documentation. THE OTHER DEMENTIAS 1 hour In this training module, participants will learn it is not always Alzheimer s, for there are over 70 different dementias. The participants will learn how the different dementia s present in the older adult and how they may differ from Alzheimer s. Participants will learn treatments/interventions for different dementias. TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY (TBI) 1 hour This training module addresses the definition of TBI, how these injuries may occur, and the TBI population. Participants will learn about normal brain functions and be able to identify changes that emerge after a Traumatic Brain Injury. USING CREATIVITY TO MANAGE BEHAVIORS 1 hour This training module will address how caregivers/staff can use creative techniques and ideas to work with challenging and difficult behaviors of long term care residents. This is an interactive module that encourages staff to be creative and think outside the box. VIRTUAL DEMENTIA TOUR 1 hour This is an interactive training, where participants will learn firsthand some of the challenges experienced by those with dementia. The intent of this training is to increase empathy, patience and special care by experiencing what dementia might feel like, in turn reducing misunderstanding and frustration for caregivers. WHERE AM I AND HOW DID I GET HERE WANDERING BEHAVIORS 1 hour In this training module, participants will learn to identify wandering behaviors, causes and triggers for wandering, and intervention and preventative measures to keep residents safe. YOUNGER RESIDENT S PERSPECTIVE 1 hour This training module will identify current trends among younger populations residing in LTC settings, the four general types of younger residents, and how to create a positive environment for younger residents.
