1 PROSPECTUS Regional Training on Broodstock Management and Sex Determination by Ultrasound Method in Sturgeons April 2012, Baku-Azerbaijan 1. Background Various regional and national level fisheries and aquaculture sector initiatives in recent years showed that one of the main constraints to development of the aquaculture sector is the lack of availability and access to good aquaculture practices in Central Asia Region. This barrier to development is one of the most striking, particularly in view of the fact that the fisheries and aquaculture industry was well-developed in the pre-independence period in the countries of the region. Sturgeons have inhabited the earth for more than 200 million years, but in the last century have suffered a devastating population decline. Highly valued for their prized caviar eggs, sturgeons have been decimated by overfishing, water pollution, and the construction of dams that block their spawning routes. At present, most existing sturgeon hatcheries in the region especially Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkey have been constructed on the basis of traditional designs and are intended for the collection of a considerable quantity (several thousands) of wild breeders and simultaneous large-scale release (millions) of fingerlings of equal weight and age. One of the limiting factors for the development of hatchery-reared sturgeon broodstocks has been the lack of appropriate methods for early non invasive sex identification that would allow increased efficiency in the creation and use of sturgeon pedigrees and broodstock selection. The ultrasound diagnostic method has been shown to be a highly informative and useful noninvasive rapid technique for sexing and maturity staging that can strongly assist in the optimization of management control of farmed broodstock. It is important to note that even today, this method may enable early selection of not only males intended for sale, but also of early mature females destined for broodstock and caviar production. The situation which was summarized above and the present conditions in Central Asia, were discussed one more time during the 4th Intergovernmental Meeting on June 2011 in Issyk kul- Kyrgyzstan and the Second Tri-partite meeting on 21 December 2011 in Istanbul Turkey. Especially Azerbaijan delegation refreshed their request on the training on broodstock management and sex determination by ultrasound method in sturgeons and invited the organization to be held the training in Azerbaijan. Other Central Asia countries supported the idea and then the training on Broodstock Management and Sex Determination by Ultrasound Method in Sturgeons was put in the workplan 2012 of FISHDEV.

2 2. Objectives This training will provide to sturgeon producers and researchers increased knowledge of: 1. Broodstock management of sturgeons; 2. Nutritional material and requirements of the fish; and 3. Ultrasound diagnostics of sex and maturation determination. 3. Expected Outputs 1. At least 20 public and/or private sector specialists in the region countries (Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan) and Turkey, able to implement producing sturgeon in their farms/hatcheries; 2. Increased awareness and understanding among the governments, private industry and potential investors on the needs and requirements of sturgeon production in Central Asia. 4. Organization and Partners Financial support for the regional training is received from the Central Asia Regional Programme for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development-FISHDEV Central Asia, under the FAO Turkey partnership Programme (FTPP). 5. Participants The primary target audience of the training are sturgeon producers and researchers who are acquainted with fish biology and fish anatomy. Interested fish farmers, researchers and possible investors should fill the attached application form, including a short motivation letter in Russian or English to FAOSEC (Ms. Kiyal Guzel) before 12 March From each invited Country, up to 4 people will be accepted for the workshop based on the profiles of the candidates. The expenses indicated below will be met by FAO for those applicants that are accepted by the FISHDEV Central Asia programme: a. Flight tickets, travel organization and airport transfers; b. Hotel accommodation in single room (including breakfast); c. Lunch during the 3 days training; d. Gala dinner at the first day of the training; e. Transportation for the technical visit/practical part of the training; g. Simultaneous interpretation service English-Russian and Russian-English; h. The participants will receive reduced DSA that the amount will be informed after the candidate selection process. 6. Language of Workshop During the training, communication will be done in Russian and English. Simultaneous interpretation service will be provided in English and Russian at the training.

3 7. Venue The training will have the theoretical and practical parts and the theoretical part will be organized in the Hotel Ganjali, U. Gadjibekov Str., 48, 1010 Baku - Azerbaijan, on April 2012 (2 days). After 2 days theoretical training, on the third day (13 April 2012), the practical training will be given in Hyllynski Sturgeon Breeding Plant which belongs to the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan where is located 160 km south of Baku. 8. Trainers The training will be given by Prof.Dr. (The Director of South Branch Federal Center of Selection and Genetics for Aquaculture, Krasnodar-Russia), Dr. (The Researcher of South Branch Federal Center of Selection and Genetics for Aquaculture Krasnodar-Russia) and Dr. Ozgur ALTAN (Aquaculture Expert of GCP/RER/031/TUR-SEC). 9.
