1st EHS CONGRESS 1994 Greece 12 The first Domestic Meeting of the EHS was organised by the first President, Professor Emmanoel Dretakis in Heraklion, Crete, Greece, 3-4th June More than 200 members attended the meeting at the Capsis Beach Hotel, set in sprawling botanic gardens and splendidly located on its own private peninsula. The programme was highly rewarding with about 120 papers presented from different parts of Europe. The quality was uniformly high, so Prof Dretakis and the Secretary, Reg Elson, had been forced to make some difficult decisions on which to accept. The organiser reasonably thought that a significant proportion of members would not attend unless they had the opportunity to present their work and, on reflection, they concluded that for this, the First Domestic Meeting, it was important to attract as many as possible. Therefore each participant was limited to one paper, so that everyone could present. That would give members time to decide the future direction of the Society and also, begin to get to know each other. The resulting scientific programme was excellent. There were three Invited Lecturers: Prof G Hartofilakidis from Athens, Greece, who spoke on Classification and management of acetabular deficiencies in congenital hip disease in adults. Mr R Villar (Cambridge, UK), also spoke on Hip Arthroscopy (a technique was beginning to emerge in those years); last, Prof E Helidonis (Crete, Greece), who gave a lecture on Lasers in medicine. There was also an interesting Preliminary Discussion on Concerning the future of this Society Format for the General Meeting with EFORT by Mr Michael Freeman. The Symposium was Epidemiology of hip fracture in Europe. The coordinator was E Dretakis and the participants: P Benun (Tromdheim, Norway); E Dretakis (Crete, Greece); E Garcia-Cimbrelo (Madrid, Spain); PJ Clegg (Leicester, UK); A Proenca (Coimbra, Portugal) and KG Thorngren (Lund, Sweden). Also there were 105 free papers on different subjects, including any and all hip topics that could interest our members. The Guest Lectures, Symposium and all abstracts were published in the Supplement of the J Bone Joint Surg British edition. During the General Business Meeting, members agreed on the Constitution and Bylaws of EHS. It would participate in the next EFORT Meeting, arranging a Speciality Day in the Munich meeting on 4th July 1995 (where the change in President was made; since then, our President is changed at our biannual EHS Meetings). The Society also decided to hold the 2nd Domestic Meeting in Helsinki (see p14). EHS was open for membership to any European doctor or scientific worker with a special interest relating to treatment of disease of the hip joint. Applications needed to be sponsored by two full members and accompanied by a CV, much as they are today. Cretan Mythology Knossos in Crete is believed to be the oldest civilisation in Europe and has been inhabited since 7000BC. It was home to the Minoan Civilization ( BC) and is the cradle of Western Culture. It is associated with the legend of King Minos and his palace. According to Greek mythology, Rhea hid Zeus from his father on Mount Ida. Zeus himself reached Crete after abducting Europe, and from their relationship were born three children, one of whom was Minos, whose wife gave birth to the Minotaur, which was kept in the Labyrinth. 2 2nd EHS CONGRESS 1996 Finland 14 The new President, Prof Erik B Riska, organised the 2nd Domestic Meeting of the EHS at the Hotel Kalastajatorpa in Helsinki, Finland, 2-5th July The meeting was very well organised and had an excellent scientific level. The hotel was in the Munkkiniemi area, 5kms from the city centre and on the coast. The scientific programme was divided into three sections: children; fractures of the hip joint; and replacement surgery of the hip joint. As in Crete, Prof Riska allowed only one paper per participating member, so that more people could participate. The scientific programme was excellent. There were two guest speakers, Prof Leena Paltonen-Palotie (National Public health Institute of Finland), who lectured on Molecular Genetic of Finnish Diseases, and Prof Above: Prof Erik B Riska was pleased with a very successful 2nd meeting Michael W Chapman (Sacramento, California, USA), who spoke on Biomechanics of the acetabular influence of fracture and repair. There were 86 free papers on different topics covering everything that might interest our members. These were included in different symposia: Fractures of the Hip (Moderator: A Alho, Finland); Developmental Dislocation of the Hip (Moderator: R Bombelli, Italy); Hip Problems in Adolescents (Moderators: E W Morscher, Switzerland, and L Jani, Germany); Materials of Endoprostheses (Moderators: J Witvoet, France, and A Schreiber, Switzerland); Femoral Problems and Survival (Moderator: G Bentley, UK); Revisions of the Femoral Component (Moderators: B G Weber, Switzerland, W Pulh, Germany, and R S M Ling and L Solomon, both UK); and Revisions of the Acetabulum (Moderators: E W Morscher, Switzrland, and R Huiskes, The Netherlands). The Guest Lectures, Symposia and all abstracts were published in the Supplement of the J Bone Joint Surg British edition. During the General Business Meeting, the Presidency of the EHS was Above (front row L-R): Past President Prof Dretakis; Guest speaker Prof Michael W Chapman from Sacramento, California, USA ; EHS President Prof Riska; Mr M Freeman, along with other well known colleagues passed from Prof Erik B Riska of Finland to Prof Jacques Witvoet of Paris, France, who had been elected the new President. The new Vice-President was then Secretary and Founder of the EHS, Mr Reginald Elson, who also continued as Secretary. The 3rd Domestic Meeting would take place in Beaune, France (see overleaf). At the end of the meeting all members were very encouraged by the success of our 2nd congress, from both the scientific and social viewpoints, and felt satisfied with the success of EHS and its promising future. The success of this meeting in Finland was decisive for the continuity and future of our Society. Helsinki Cathedral The Cathedral (right), Opera House and many other sites of the city were enjoyed by EHS members 15

3rd EHS CONGRESS 1998 France 16 President of the EHS, Dr Jacques Witvoet, organised the 3rd Domestic Congress of the EHS at the Palais des Congres in the beautiful medieval city of Beaune near Dijon, in France, from 25-27th June The meeting was very wellorganised with an interesting contribution from our members. The scientific programme had a high level. There was an interesting roundtable on Alternative Bearing Surfaces, where Prof F Langlais (from France) gave a lecture on Polyethylene in THR: Advantages, disadvantages and future, Prof Laurent Sedel (from France) spoke on Advantages and disadvantage of ceramics bearing and Dr Claude B-Rieker (from Switzerland) spoke on Clinical wear performance of metal-metal hip arthroplasties. There were different guest lectures: Dr Roberto Above: EHS President Prof Jacques Witvoet, who ran a successful meeting in Beaune Giacometti-Ceroni (Milan, Italy) spoke on Conservative treatment of the painful dysplastic hip ; Dr Philippe Chiron (France) on Hip arthroscopy technique and indications in young patients ; Prof Y Konttinen (Helsinki, Finland) on Reaction to wear particles in THR ; Dr Eduardo Garcia-Cimbrelo (Madrid, Spain) on The outcome of the Charnley femoral stem at 25 years ; Prof Jean-Noel Argenson (Marseille, France) on Is there a need for custom-made hip prostheses? ; and finally Dr N Pasuti (Nantes, France) on Advantages and disadvantages of HA coating. There also were 125 free papers and 40 posters on every hip topic that could interest our members. All abstracts were published in the Book of Abstracts. During the General Business Meeting, as became the tradition, Professor Jacques Witvoet finished his reign as EHS President and Mr Reginald Elson (UK) was elected the new President. The new Vice-President was Dr Roberto Giacometti-Ceroni (Milan, Italy). The new Secretary General to be elected was Mr Gordon Bannister (Bristol, UK) and the Treasurer was Prof K Soballe Left-R: Dr Tsiamtsouris, Dr Zaharopoulos, Prof Dretakis, Prof Macheras (a future President) and Dr Kostakos (Denmark). The Society also decided to celebrate the subsequent EHS Meeting in Bristol (UK). Again this meeting was extremely well rewarded from scientific contents and social contacts. In connection with the EFORT congress in Barcelona, Spain, the EHS held a satellite meeting there in April This was a milestone event for our society indeed. Hospices of Beaune During the stay in Beaune we had some time for leisure to explore the ville d art et de culture, capitale mondialement reputee des vins de Bourgogne that conserve its legendary past and offers a warm welcome to visitors. The city has preserved its historical city and walls, including the 1443 Hotel-Dieu des Hospices de Beaune (right, with Dr Garcia-Cimbrelo) founded by Nicolas Rolin, the councillor to the Duchy of Bourgogne. This wonderful hospice building and hospital for the indigent is today an interesting museum. 17

4th EHS CONGRESS 2000 England 18 Bristol was home to the EHS Meeting 2000, organised by EHS President Mr Reginald Elson from Sheffield (England) at the Marriott Bristol Hotel, 1st-4th June. Conference Directors were Mr Reg Elson and EHS Secretary General, Mr Gordon Banister, from Bristol. They were responsible for the meeting being so very well organised and achieving such an excellent scientific level. The Marriott offered us a great venue. The scientific programme had a high level that was predominantly represented by our members on submissions. Subjects included Hip Replacement, Fracture Management and Basic Science. Every attempt was made to accept submissions in at least poster format in break-out subspeciality sessions. There was also a small number of invited speakers, Above: Mr Gordon Bannister, Secretary General of the EHS and Conference-Co-Director with Mr Reg Elson, President Above: Bristol Cathedral both from within the EHS and from non-members. Friday afternoon was free for recreation. Definitive presentations included almost every recent question regarding hip surgery, such as osteotomy and DDH, basic science, revision surgery, proximal femoral fractures, primary fixation, complications, robotic surgery, and hip registries. There were 76 oral free presentations. All the presentations were published in the Journal of Bone Surgery British Edition As had become traditional, Mr Reginal Elson stepped down as EHS President and Dr Roberto Giacometti- Ceroni (from Milan, Italy) become the new President. The new Vice-President was Prof Martin Krismer (from Innsbruck, Austria). Mr Gordon Bannister During this meeting, the British Editor of Hip International, Mr Martin D Northmore-Ball and the Italian Editor Dr Aldo Toni, were very active, working to achieve our journal: the Official Journal of the European Hip Society. As of our next meeting, in Italy, all presentations to EHS meetings would be published in Hip International. We want to thank these Editors who raised the scientific level of Hip International, which was later included in Pub-Med. and Professor Kjeld Soballe continued respectively as Secretary General and Treasurer of the EHS. Most old Board Members were changed. At the end of the meeting, all members were very pleased with the success of the fourth meeting, both because of its scientific level and social opportunities, feeling it confirmed the success of the EHS and its promising future. On the social side, we had time for some leisure: we admired Bristol, the Cathedral, the old bridge, and especially nearby Bath, the beautiful Roman city 20km away. Bath was founded as a thermal center by the Romans with the name Aquae Sulis ( the Waters of Sulis ), in 43AD and was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in The EHS held its usual satellite meeting at the EFORT congress in Brussels in Although the number of attendees was discrete, the high level of the presented oral free papers of the 4th Meeting was important to the continuity of the EHS. 19

5th EHS CONGRESS 2002 Italy 20 Baveno, Lago Maggiore, Italy, was home to the next Domestic Meeting, held from 5-8th June Organised by the President of our Society, Dr Roberto Giacometti Ceroni at the splendid Dino Hotel, the scientific programme had a high level and attendance was elevated. A number of papers concerning differents topics ranging from paediatric orthopaedics to surgical approaches, from osteotomies to new technologies, were covered. Invited speakers were Dr CA Engh (from Alexandria, USA), Dr G Randelli (from Milano, Italy), Dr P Dungl (from Prague, Czech Republic), Dr M Kerboull (from Paris, France) and Dr P Cherubino (from Varese, Italy). The symposia were dedicated to Non-cemented stems, Thickness of the cement Above: Dr Roberto Giacometti Ceroni, President, was keen that EHS continue to be a real Hip Society and not just a THA Society mantle, Alternative bearing surfaces, and European Register. There were also different Instructional Courses including Internal fixation in hip fractures (Dr R Marti, The Netherlands), Statistical data evaluation (Dr A Toni, Italy), Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (Dr R Giacometti Ceroni, Italy), and Digital images (Dr A Pace, Italy). Dr Paolo Gallinaro (Italy) gave a lecture on Human factors and infection in THA. More than 170 papers were presented orally in this congress. All the symposia, lectures, oral presentations and posters were published in Hip International. In the previous meeting, in Bristol (2000), the British Editor of the Hip International, Mr Martin D Northmore-Ball, and the Italian Editor Dr Aldo Toni, had convinced the EHS Board to make Hip International the Official Journal of the European Hip Society. Begining with that EHS meeting in Italy, all presentations made in EHS meetings were published in Hip International. The new Editors were Mr I D Learmonth from Bristol (UK) and Dr A Toni from Bologna (Italy). During this meeting, we organised and awarded the first edition of the EHS Award for the best unpublished paper by an author under 40 years old. The winner was a paper by Dr S Kold (Denmark) as lead author and it was published in Hip International. The American Hip Society was invited to this meeting and they officially joined us in Baveno. Two people were awarded honorary membership: Dr Maurice Muller and the President of the American Hip Society. During the General Business Meeting, Lago Maggiore the President of EHS, Dr Giacometti Ceroni stepped down and Prof Martin Krismer (from Innsbruck, Austria) became the new President of EHS. The new President Elect was Prof I Cetin (from Turkey). Dr Herve Olivier (from Paris, France) became the new Secretary General and Prof Kjeld Soballe continued as Treasurer. The meeting was scientifically successful and members were pleased that our Society s future looked promising. We enjoyed the beautiful lake and visits were made to the Borromean Islands and Villa Taranto. Left: Profs Dretakis, Solomon and Bombelli Below L: Prof Kjeld Soballe at the Presidential Dinner 21

6th EHS CONGRESS 2004 Austria 22 The next EHS Meeting was organised in beautiful Innsbruck, Austria, by our President, Prof Martin Krismer, at the Congress Innsbruck building, 23rd-26th June Before the meeting, Prof Krismer asked the members of the EHS about the future format for our Domestic Meetings and for interesting topics. During the EFORT Congress in Helsinki in June 2003, the proposal by EFORT to organise a combined meeting of two speciality organisations was discussed. The idea was to run the speciality meetings independently from the main EFORT Congress, but to share the industrial exhibition and an EFORT Update Meeting. After discussion, representatives of EFORT, the SECEC/ES- SSSE (Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons) and the EHS again met in September 2003 to decide on the Left: 6th EHS President, Prof Martin Krismer Prof Learmonth, Editor of Hip International with Dr Aldo Dr Olivier, Secretary General of EHS format. The EHS Meeting in Innsbruck was organised with an additional EFORT Update Meeting lasting one day, but otherwise separate only the industrial exhibition was shared. As in previous EHS meetings, the Innsbruck scientific programme had a high level and there were many attendees. There were 50 lectures and seminars included: Slipped capital femoral epiphysis ; Computer assisted THR ; Revision of THR ; Bone grafting and bone substitutes ; European Arthroplasty Registry ; Resurfacing and Less invasive THR. The SciCom was surprised to receive 193 abstracts for evaluation, demonstrating the enormous interest our con- gress had gained. Only 68 free papers were accepted for oral presentation, and 106 for posters. There also were two Pre-Courses: EBRA. Implant migration, and MIS and Navigation. All presentations were published in Hip International, with the help of the Editors, Prof Ian Learmonth (Bristol, UK) and Dr Aldo Toni (Bologna, Italy). During the General Business Meeting, Prof Krismer stepped down and Prof Mazhar Tokgozoglu (from Ankara, The Alps Below: Son and Father Members, Dr Eduardo Garcia- Rey and Dr Eduardo Garcia-Cimbrelo Turkey) was elected as new President. Dr Eduardo Garcia-Cimbrelo (from Madrid, Spain) became the new President Elect, while Dr Herve Olivier and Prof Kjeld Soballe continued as Secretary General and Treasurer of the EHS. The abstracts presented interesting conclusions and all the members were very happy with the success of this meeting from a scientific level, an enrollment level and socially too, since it confirmed the success of the EHS. As in preceeding Domestic EHS Meetings, we had time for leisure and to admire the city of Innsbruck with its medieval historical centre surrounded by a marvellous mountain panorama. The social programme included an official dinner in the medieval Salt Capital. Another special, magical night was our visit to the Swarovski Crystal Worlds. 23

7th EHS CONGRESS 2006 Turkey 24 The Seventh Domestic Meeting of the European Hip Society was organised by President Prof Mazhar Tokgozoglu in the beautiful Sungate Port Royal de Luxe Resort Hotel at Antalya, Turkey, on the Turkish Riviera, from 23rd-26th June As in previous EHS meetings, the scientific programme had a high level and attendance was very good. There was a Presidential Guest Lecturer, Orhun K Muratoglu, a Turkish member working in Boston (USA) who spoke on New horizons in polyethylene technology. After a hard evaluation, the Sci- Com chose 275 free papers, including those on Primary THR (10 sessions), Revision surgery (3 sessions), and Resurfacing (2 sessions). Seventy-two posters were also presented. All presentations were published in Hip International. Additional sessions were organised, such as on Above: 7th EHS President, Prof Mazhar Tokgozoglu, from Ankara in Turkey EHS President Prof Tokgozoglu (right) stepped down and passed the pendant to Dr Garcia- Cimbrelo (left) from Spain, who became the next EHS President European Arthroplasty Registry Meeting by N Bolher and a colleague. Interesting symposia were also organised by industry. During the General Business Meeting, the President Professor Mazhar Tokgozoglu stepped down and President Elect, Dr Eduardo Garcia-Cimbrelo (from Madrid, Spain), become the new President with the responsibility of organizing the next Meeting in Madrid in Professor George Macheras (from Athens, Greece) became the new President Elect. Dr Herve Olivier (from Paris, France) and Professor Kjeld Soballe continued as Secretary General and Treasurer of the EHS. The collection of abstracts came to very interesting conclusions and, at the end of the meeting, we all were very happy by the success of the seventh meeting from a scientific level. The meeting itself was a huge success. There were 778 participants from 34 countries and it was a success from an economic and social point of view; the results were excellent, confirming the success of the EHS. Our society was also starting to become an institution that could influence health policies, and over the years we would This meeting showed that the EHS had grown exponentially and with its scientific activities had become the leading, and one of the most influential, speciality societies of Orthopaedics in Europe increase our role. As in preceding Domestic EHS Meetings, we also had time for leisure. Antalya is the largest city of the Turkish Riviera and is becoming one of the major vacation sites in Southern Europe. It is also close to the ancient cities of Perge, Aspendis, Phaselis and Termessos. The Antalya Museum holds a second century sarcophagus of Hercules. Past (far left) and Present (left) EHS Presidents dance with their wives at the Congress Dinner. Right: the programme 25

8th EHS CONGRESS 2008 Spain 26 Dr Eduardo Garcia-Cimbrelo organised the Madrid meeting in the Congress Palace on the Paseo de la Castellana, from 23rd- 26th June. He also organised the Annual Spanish Hip Society meeting just beforehand, the idea being to run the speciality meetings independently, but to share the industrial exhibition and reduce costs. This way, Spanish hip surgeons could share advances and new discoveries in hip surgery. Since 1993, EFORT had organised its meeting every two years, so we had organised our EHS Domestic Meeting in the intervening year, to avoid any clashes. During early 2007, however, EFORT Above: 8th EHS President, Dr Eduardo Garcia-Cimbrelo, and author of this EHS booklet announced a full-scale 2008 congress in Nice. We had already planned our congress for Madrid, having signed contracts with hotels and industry, and the preliminary programme was out. This proximity of the two major meetings two weeks apart had an obvious impact on our participant number. From 2008 s July-September issue onwards, our editors succeeded in having Hip International included in Index Medicus/ Medline something that would provide an important mouthpiece for hip surgery internationally, and for our society Therefore, future EHS meetings would occur in September to avoid overlaps. The scientific programme had a high level and the number of attendees reached over 400. The Presidential Guest Lecturer was Miguel E Cabanela from the Mayo Clinic. There were 10 symposia: Optimised pathways for hip fracture treatment (K-G Thorngren, Sweden); Femoro-Acetabular Impingement (R Ganz, Switzerland); Congenital dysplasia of the hip (J-N Argenson, France); Resurfacing (I A Learmonth, UK); Bone Fixation in primary THA (K Zweymuller, Austria); Alternative bearing surfaces (A Toni, Italy); Acetabular revision surgery (R Gradinger, Germany); Femoral revision surgery (L Sedel, France); Infection (J Cordero-Ampuero, Spain); and Present and future of hip arthroplasty registers in Europe (lessons learnt in national and European contest) (L Zagra, Italy). Two-hundred abstracts were submitted from four continents. The SciCom accepted, after a demanding evaluation, 145 for oral presentation and 55 for posters; Spain submitted 66 abstracts, 39 were accepted for free papers, and 27 for posters. All presentations were published in the Society s Journal. During the General Business Meeting, the EHS Presidency changed to Dr George Macheras, who would organise the next Meeting in Athens. Dr Zagra (Italy) became the new President Elect. Prof Krismer (Austria) become the new Secretary General and Prof Soballe continued as Treasurer. Prof Learmonth became Advisory Editor of Hip International and was replaced as Editor by Mr R F Spencer from UK, while Dr Toni from Italy continued as Editor. Despite the proximity of EFORT s meeting, the collection of abstracts offered interesting conclusions and, at the end of the meeting, all the members lauded its success from a scientific and social point of view, confirming the success of the EHS. This meeting showed that the EHS continued to grow as a leading and very influential speciality society in European Orthopaedics. Madrid, the capital of Spain, offers visitors museums, art galleries, history and many monuments. The Welcome Reception at the Palace Congress consisted of a Flamenco Show and the Welcome Cocktail took place at the Real Madrid Stadium Santiago Bernabeu. Participants were happily surprised! 27

9th EHS CONGRESS 2010 Greece 28 Dr Macheras was the first EHS delegate for specialty societies to join EFORT s ExCom and reported that EHS would start to have half-day sessions at the EFORT Meetings. EHS Committees were created: SciCom (Chairman: K Soballe) EduCom (Chairman: J Tabutin) Website Committee (F Randelli) Historical Committee (E G-Cimbrelo) Dr George Macheras held the next EHS congress in Athens in the Hilton Hotel, from 9-11th September. The financial crisis made it a difficult meeting to organise and big industry names were reluctant to participate. Nevertheless, no efforts were spared to make a splendid meeting for all. The organiser reduced the registration fees and negotiated affordable accommodation rates to comply with international demand for reduced expenditure and to make participation possible for younger doctors. A stimulating programme covered all possible topics with internationally- acknowledged speakers. There were 14 symposia, including: Alternative Bearing Surfaces (T Karachalios); New Aspects in Osteoarthritis (M Krismer); Revision THA (L Zagra); Modularity in THA (A Toni); Complications in THA (P Korovessis); Con- Above: 9th President Dr George Macheras attracted a huge 548 participants despite the crisis genital Hip Disease (T Xenakis); Infections in THA (K N Malizos); Navigation and MIS THA (W Siebert); Current Concepts in Hip Arthroscopic Surgery (R Villar); TJA Registries (R F Spencer); Femoroacetabular Impingement (K Siebenrock); Biology Bone Implant Interface (A Aamondt and G Digas); Aseptic Hip Revision (J Tabutin); and Complications of Metal to Metal Hip Arthoplasties (P McLardy-Smith). There were also lectures by: K N Malizos; M Cabanela; S G Sourmelis; T H Sculco; E Su; E Michelinakis: P Kjaersgaard-Andersen; A Gonzalez della Valle; B Bitounis; L Sedel; M Szendroi; J Wilkinson; I Learmonth; S Memtsoudis; and A Moroni. Prof G Hartofilakidis gave a brilliant lec- Above L-R: 3 EHS Presidents, Luigi Zagra, Mazhar Tokgozoglu and George Macheras ture in the Symposium on Femoroacetabular impingement. The symposia were complemented by the Industry Workshops. Regards abstracts, 385 were submitted, but only 255 free papers and 24 posters could be accepted. There was a total of 548 participants. Prizes and awards were The Acropolis and the Aegean presented to the best scientific papers. The Presidency transferred to Dr Luigi Zagra and Dr Gosta Ulmark (Sweden) become the new President Elect, while Prof Krismer continued as Secretary General and Dr Theofilos Karachalios (Greece) was elected new Treasurer. The problematic name for our meeting of Domestic, which confused industrial partners and lead to reduced involvement, was changed to Congress. Friendships with Eastern European countries increased, with Nat Reps for Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia and Slovenia. The abstracts presented led to very interesting conclusions and the success of this congress proves the viability of our Hip Society, even in demanding times. Athens, with more than 7,000 years of history, offered a great number of possibilities for leisure, such as the Acropolis monuments (right) and their adjacent museums. A short excursion to Cape Sounion and the Temple of Apollo was also organised. It was splendid to roam around the city and marvel at the Aegean islands. Right: Eduardo Garcia-Rey, Jose Cordero-Ampuero, Mrs and Dr Garcia- Cimbrelo and Miguel E Cabanela. 29

10th EHS CONGRESS 2012 Italy 30 Milan was the city for our 10th EHS Congress, organised by the President Dr Luigi Zagra at the Marriot Hotel from 20th-22nd September. The Congress was a big success with 750 participants. Both the organising and the scientific committees arranged a stimulating programme; internationallyacknowledged speakers covered the main hot topics in hip pathologies. The reviewers performed an excellent job of evaluating all the submitted papers not as easy task. Finally, 274 papers were accepted for oral presentation divided into 29 different sessions. 163 more were selected for e-poster presentation. Prizes and awards were presented to the best scientific papers. The symposia were complemented by Industry Workshops. 12 12th EHS CONGRESS 2016 Germany 34 Munich was the venue for our next congress, organised by Prof Siebert in the International Congress Centre on 6-9th September. With 700 delegates, the 12th EHS Congress was a huge success. The organisers and SciCom put together an excellent programme. Renowned Prof Reinhard Graf and his colleague Prof Tschauner Christian, both of Stolzalpe, Austria, kicked off the congress with a Refresher Course on Sonography of the Infant Hip. The Congress was also a big chance to hear American experts speak on hip orthopaedics (see right). On Thursday were two German- French symposia, highlighting the French perspective on topics such as dual mobility. On Friday a hands-oncourse on arthroscopic hip surgery was offered in the Cadaver Lab. There were five simultaneous meetings in various rooms and delegates chose between Invited Symposia, Oral Presentations and E-Posters with Oral Presentation on Above: President Siebert was complimented by delegates on the excellent scientific content subjects including: Trauma Meets Arthroplasty Hip; What s Going on in Orthopaedics in Europe?; Biomechanics & Biotribology; and Rapid Rehabilitation (24hrs) after THA. 13 13th EHS CONGRESS 2018 The Netherlands 36 BWillem Schreurs is the President for the current EHS Meeting in The Hague, 20-22nd September, held at the World Forum congress centre. This meeting is all about the latest innovations in hip care and hip surgery, discussion of treatment options, meeting the industry and of course hip friends. International as well as European hip surgeons depend on our meetings for up to date information on international standards, to provide their patients with the best in hip care. Highlight lectures include: Fast-track concept and pain management, by Dr Henrik Kehlet (Denmark) and Obesity and total hip replacement Challenges and facts, by Prof Per Kjaersgaard- Andersen (President of EFORT). For the first time, the EHS Congress welcomes a Guest Nation, Argentina. The Argentinian Association of Hip & Knee Surgeons (ACARO) is represented by six leading surgeons (see right.) ACARO has invited two EHS delegates to attend their Annual Meeting in October 2018 in Buenos Aires. Above: President Schreurs brings the EHS Congress to The Hague EFORT Congress 2018 As usual EHS participated in the programme as a Specialty and Partner Society. In Barcelona, on 30th May, the EHS Half Day Session took place with 2 symposia:- 1: Present And Future Technologies In Acetabular Revisions For Severe Protrusion: Materials, Techniques And Results? Speakers: Profs Tsiridis (Greece), Timperley (UK), Zagra (Italy), Argenson (France) and Flivik (Sweden). 2: Risk Factors For THA Failures: The Patient, The Surgeon, The Diagnosis & The Implant Organisers: Profs Karachalios (Greece) and Gunther (Germany), and speakers include these two members as well as Profs Atilla (Turkey) and Babis (Greece). EHS also participated in the symposium Full Day on Advanced THR & TKR Combined Session, organized by EFORT, EHS & EKS. While an EHS congress must be attractive to all by offering worldclass speakers, it is also important for the exchange of ideas an opportunity for delegates to present their research. This is proven by 500+ abstracts received. Many abstracts are focussed on surgical approaches for total hip arthroplasty. The focus on this issue is remarkable, when it is a procedure that has been around for such a long time. However, it reflects the efforts of all of us at EHS to improve even this already very successful procedure. Very interesting discussions are guaranteed. Time for discussion following abstract presentations is also important, therefore there are an additional two minutes for discussion after the 196 time slots of six minutes each, giving each presenter a total of eight EHS Guest Nation: Argentina The EHS Congress will present Instructional Course lectures from Argentina s top surgeons: THA in acute septic arthritis and sequelae, Fernando Lopreite Use of standardized infection ratio to asses the impact of preventive measures in THA, Federico Burgo Total hip arthroplasty in Crowe III, IV Dysplasia, Pablo Maletti Methaphyseal debonding of the collarless stem, Martin Buttaro Bipolar prosthesis in unstable intertrochanteric hip fractures. Results in patients of 70 years or older, German Viale Fernando Comba will lead discussions after the talks. Right: Argentinian Association of Hip & Knee Surgeons is our Guest Society minutes. Ten abstracts will be selected for the Award Sessions. Traditional posters are still prefered to e-posters, so the poster session will allow for 250 classical posters. For optimal attention, the Welcome Reception has been organised to take place around the posters exhibition, with traditional Dutch beer and pretzels. At the Dinner, held in the famous Grand Hotel Amreth Kurhaus, the Presidency will be handed over to Dr Jean-Alain Epinette of France. A new EHS Treasurer will be elected at the GA, as Prof Karachalios steps down. Thanks to him for his hard work. 37

14th EHS CONGRESS 2020 T wenty-two years after the Beaune meeting, EHS will return to France, to the prestigious city of Lille, chaired by its President Dr JeanAlain Epinette, orthopaedic surgeon from Lille University, and Past President of the French Hip and Knee Society. The Organizing Committee will address the invaluable expertise of Luigi Zagra, Klaus-Peter Gunther and Manel Ribas, in addition to French key surgeons Henri Migaud, Chief of Lille University s Orthopaedic Department, Andre Ferreira, Sebastien Lustig and Nicolas Reina. Lille is the fourth largest city in France at the heart of Europe. As well as being an international crossroads and dynamic financial centre, Lille, as also a city of art and history, was designated the European Capital of Culture in 2004 and continues to provide a rich cultural and artistic experience, boasting a preserved heritage, a warm and friendly atmosphere and a thriving cul38 Above: Dr Jean-Alain Epinette will welcome us to Lille in 2020 France knowledge in any hip-related topic. At Lille 2020, we will be proud to stay at the cutting edge of orthopaedics. The programme will stand upon the three pillars of hip surgery: the basic, the current state of the art and what s next, focusing specifically on the true and false innovations within these three sections. In such a way, symposia, guest lectures, presentations, posters and round tables will address past, current and new trends in hip managements for primaries and revisions, perspectives for the treatment of infections, balance sheets in specific options as resurfacing, short stems or modular implants. In addition, full sessions will be devoted to the future, with robotics, virtual and augmented reality, and some promising new devices to help us in our surgical practice. On behalf the Organizing Committee, we look forward to welcoming each of you to EHS 2020 Lille and Lille Grand Palais Above: Three EHS Presidents, Jean-Alain Epinette (right) will take on the Presidency from B Willem Schreurs (centre), who took it from Werner Siebert (left) tural life. The Congress centre, Lille Grand Palais, is located in the city centre, just 10 minute s walk from the TGV Station, easily reachable by air, rail or road. With a million visitors per year, it offers customized packages, and great flexibility of rooms and spaces. The EHS aims to provide the best Lille Grand Palais (below) ( is the venue for our next congress, with 20,000m2 of exhibition space, including three auditoriums, 28 committee rooms and a Zenith Arena, it fits 50-5,000 participants.
