7 Argumentative Speech Sample Public Smoking I: Introduction 1. Attention Getter: What if your life was cut short because of a decision someone else made? This is what happens when non-smokers ingest second hand smoke in restaurants and other public places. 2. Define Both Sides of Argument: Smoking is a worldwide phenomenon that effects millions of people each year. Many people believe it is within their rights to smoke as it as a freedom afforded to them under the principle of free will. Others, however, argue that public smoking should be banned because of the negative effects it has on others around them, including family, friends, and complete strangers. This issue has been a personal and legal issue for years. 3. Bond: Link to the Audience (Why is this important?): Smokers unconsciously kill hundreds of people with their second hand smoke every year. It is time that something is done to stop this. 4. Thesis Statement: While many believe public smoking is a personal choice, the government should ban public smoking because it harms the health of both non-smokers and smokers, it puts our environment in grave dangers, and it is expensive to the American public. II: Body 1 Pro Side (Why should we ban public smoking) Topic Sentence: Many people believe public smoking is a personal choice but the government should ban public smoking because of serious health risks for both non-smokers and smokers. 1. Main Point #1 The government should ban public smoking because it harms the health of non-smokers. Research from the California Cardiovascular Institute states that 60% of non-smokers have ingested second hand smoke in their lifetime. (Smith 53 ) Doctors from the University of Chicago cited in a study between 1999 and 2000 that child from a smoking family will have ingested enough second hand smoke to make up 103 packs of cigarettes by age 7. ( Second Hand Kills 2 ) 2. Main Point #2 The government should ban public smoking because it harms the health of smokers. Experts from the NYU school of medicine say that smoking compromise lung health and function by 11% each year that the person smokes. ( NYU Health 1 ) Doctors have proven the long term health effects of smoking can include up to 13 types of cancer as well as the need for limb amputation and skin problems. (Thompson 24 ) Etc
