2 HEALTH Grade 10 The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. (by Sean Covey) CONTENT STANDARD 10 H 1: The student will understand the skills and knowledge necessary to become effective leaders in their circles of influence. 10H 1.1 The student understands Habit # 1: Be Proactive accepts responsibility and promotes personal change. The student understands Habit # 2: Begin with the 10H 1.2 End in Mind explains know where you re going, why you re going and how to get there. The student understands Habit # 3:Put First 10H 1.3 Things First manages their time effectively, prioritizes and works toward their goal with a plan. 10H 1.4 The student understands Habit # 4: Think Win-Wi.n recognizes that Win-Win is an attitude towards life, (I can win, and so can you.) 2

3 The student understands Habit # 5: Seek First to 10H 1.5 Understand, then to Be Understood understands that there are five poor listening styles. -understands genuine listening. 10H 1.6 The student understands Habit # 6: Synergize understands two or more people working together can create a better solution than either could do alone. 10H 1.7 The student understands Habit # 7: Sharpen the Saw understands the need for caring for your body, brain, heart, and soul. 3

4 HIV and AIDS CONTENT STANDARD 10 H 2: The student will understand that the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is a fatal communicable disease with no fully effective treatment or known cure. AIDS is the final stage of infection caused by the Human Immune deficiency Virus (HIV), a virus that attacks the Immune System. 10H 2.1 The student understands how HIV affects the body describes the process by which HIV invades the immune system. 10H 2.2 The student understands how HIV Is transmitted explains what risk behaviors are known to transmit HIV. -explains how HIV is not transmitted. -explains why teenagers are at risk. 9H 2.3 The student understands the testing for HIV infection understands how to detect HIV antibodies explains the symptoms of HIV infection. 4

5 10H 2.4 The student understands the diagnosis of AIDS explains AIDS opportunistic illnesses. The student understands the need for research and 10H 2.5 treatment for HIV and AIDS understands choosing abstinence from high-risk behaviors is 100% effective to limit the spread of HIV infection understands the need for AIDS education. 5

6 Nutrition CONTENT STANDARD 10 H 3: The student will understand the concepts and purposes of a healthy diet and the conditions that contribute to proper nutrition. The student understand sthe body s need to function 10H 3.1 properly so it can grow, repair itself, and supply the body with energy compares food habits with these of a friend and accounts for the differences and similarities of the body s need to function properly. The student understands that nutrients found in food are 10H 3.2 essential to life explains the role of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. The student understands the importance of vitamins, 10H 3.3 minerals and water compares and contrast water soluble and fat-soluble vitamins -evaluates the validity of water. 6

7 The student understands the guidelines of a 10H 3.4 healthful eating style compares the amount of nutrients that will prevent deficiencies and excess in most healthy people. (Recommended Dietary Allowances, RDA) -balances the types of foods and nutrients consumed over a course of several days. The student understands the nutrition facts panel found 10H 3.5 on all packaged food products reads and understands the list of ingredients to decide whether that food product meets their nutritional needs. The student understands that being obese, over- 10H 3.7 weight or underweight poses risks to their total health reads and understands the list of ingredients to decide whether that food product meets their nutritional needs. -explain how to determine whether or not you are overweight or underweight. The student understands that physical activity is an 10H 3.8 important part of weight management describes the benefits of a regular exercise program. 7

8 The student understands that the only way to lose 10H 3.9 weight is by burning more calories than the body consumes calculates the calories needed for someone their height and age, including physical activity in their life. The student understands that weight control 10H 3.10 requires self-discipline and commitment compares fad diets that promise to take off pounds in an abnormally short time period or without any effort. The student understands that eating disorders are 10H 3.11 symptoms of other problems compares anorexia nervosa, and bulimia nervosa. -understands nutrient-dense foods contribute to an athlete s diet by providing energy as well as nutrients. 8

9 Substance Abuse Prevention CONTENT STANDARD 10 H 4: The student will understand how the abuse of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs often plays a role in dangerous behavior and can have an adverse consequence on the body and community. 10H 4.1 The student understands the roles of medicines explains the classification of medicines. -reads and comprehends medicine labels properly and uses medicines as prescribed or intended by the manufacturer. The student understands the short and long term affects 10H 4.2 associated with the use of alcohol understands the factors that affect teen alcohol use. -understands the patterns of alcohol abuse. -exhibits knowledge and understanding both in personal choices and through actions that help people deal with substance abuse on family, friends, and school, and community levels. The student understands that psychoactive drugs 10H 4.3 affect the central nervous system and interfere with the normal functioning of the brain understands the different types of psychoactive drugs; including marijuana. 9

10 The student understands that there are damaging effects 10H 4.4 of anabolic steroids applies the six steps of the decision making process, which are; state the situation, list the options, weigh the possible outcomes, consider your values, make a decision and act, evaluate the decision. The student understands that there are damaging effects of 10H 4.5 inhalants applies effective ways to help in refusing inhalants. The student understands that there are damaging effects of 10H 4.6 date-rape drugs, i.e., ecstacy, designer drugs applies effective ways to help in refusing designer drugs. The student understands that there are a number of warning 10H 4.7 signs indicating that a substance abuse problem exists and that they can help someone about recovery from drug addiction recognizes the problem and uses a process called intervention. 10

11 First Aid and Safety CONTENT STANDARD 10 H 5: The student will understand a basic mastery of skills needed to be provided in first-aid and handling emergencies. The student understands that there are specifics in how to 10H 5.1 administer first-aid for different types of emergencies applies the priorities of check, call, and care in an emergency situation is able to administer first-aid for open wounds and severe burns. The understands that there are specifics in how to 10H 5.2 administer first-aid for different types of poisons is able to administer first aid for swallowing poison is able to administer first aid for snake-bites and when a person comes in contact with poison. The student understands how to administer first-aid 10H 5.3 for common emergencies is able to administer first aid for fractures and sprains is able to administer first aid for animal bites and bee stings is able to administer first aid for fainting is able to administer first aid for minor burns, objects in the eye and nosebleeds is able to administer first aid for weather related emergencies; i.e., frostbite, heat cramps and heat stroke. 11
