1 6 th Grade Health Course Description and Philosophy 6 th grade Health is one of five allied classes offered during first period. The focus of 6 th grade health is on the entire health and wellness of the adolescent person. The course revolves around the three areas of health: Social, Emotional and Physical. The goal is to allow students to realize all areas of health are interdependent and mesh together to promote overall wellness. Starting with decision-making and ending with drug awareness, students are challenged to relate real life outcomes to various life situations. During this 6 th grade health experience, students will learn about body systems, areas of fitness, communication and many other life skills needed to live a life of optimal health. Text Reference:! Understand what constitutes our mental-emotional health! Define a life skill and how we use them in our lifetime! Compare the differences between risk behaviors and healthful behaviors! Identify the three types of decision making styles and how our choices can define our actions! Understand what it means to be empowered! Recognize peer pressure and how difficult situations can be avoided! Define self-esteem and list was to improve self-esteem! Understand that communication involves listening to feelings as well as expressing emotions! Understand anger and how it is a natural human emotion! Recognize anger cues and how they can be controlled! Understand how our body response to stress and how we can reduce the stressors in our life 1

3 Differentiated Learning Activities Students will create a self-generated model that describes ways to manage both stress and anger so they cannot consume their lives. There will be various fictitious situations that will be given to the entire class. The students will be able to evaluate the situation and determine how they can respond in a way that shows respect of themselves as well as others involved. Unit II: Family and Social Health Essential Question: What role does social health play in the promotion of an overall healthy lifestyle?! Understand what constitutes of Family-Social Health! Recognize human relationships! List aspects that lead to a positive relationship! List aspects that lead to a negative relationship! Explain the difference between empathy and sympathy! Define the three types of conflict! Explain how conflict can harm our health! Determine actions you can take to resolve conflict! 4 Differentiated Learning Activities Students will synthesize ideas and experiences that lead to both positive and negative characteristics with personal relationships. Since conflict is prevalent during the middle school years, various real life conflict situations are posed to students where resolution is needed. The students will decide whether actions they take can escalate or deescalate a conflict. Students will reflect whether or not the determined outcomes would resolve the conflict. Unit III: Positive Physical Health Essential Question: What are the physical benefits of choosing healthful actions?! Understand the major body systems and how the effect our lives! Identify the six basic nutrients found in food! Understand energy expenditure during exercise! Understand the importance of exercise in maintaining a healthy lifestyle! Identify the four areas of physical fitness! Define target heart rate and calculate their own! Compare and contrast aerobic and anaerobic exercises! Compare and contrast isometric and isotonic exercises! Understand skill related fitness and how they are utilized in sports or activities! List ways to properly prepare body for fitness demands! Explain each letter of the acronym R.I.C.E.! Utilize the new mypyramid.gov to establish healthy eating guidelines! Recognize and explain categories within a food label 4

The students will then present this project and all the researched information to the class. With so many fad diet and exercise plans available for use; should I expose myself to unhealthy plans for the sake of looking like a magazine model or should I be confident in my personal appearance knowing I am living a healthy life? Unit IV: Negative Physical Health Essential Question: Can negative choices I make now affect me when I am an adult?! List diseases that are communicable and non-communicable 5
