3 Read the article Young and reckless fail to heed booze, obesity health message (Sun Herald 17/5/09) and complete the following questions 1. Identify the key trends of health issues relating to young people 2. Identify examples of graphic public health campaigns that have assisted in the reduction of smoking rates 3. Propose reasons why diabetes have increased within this age group 4. Discuss the various health promotion initiatives implemented by the NSW government to combat obesity. Assess how effective these strategies have been in reducing the fight against obesity levels 5. The article suggests that risky drinking levels have decreased. However there has been sufficient evidence through higher admissions to hospitals for young people and alcohol. Explore the various campaigns governments have undertaken to reduce binge drinking for young people. 6. The article states that the entire community needs to work together to change the binge drinking culture among younger people. Identify services in the community that currently exist to change the binge drinking culture and propose services that can assist communities to change the binge drinking culture 7. Assess why current health promotion initiatives such as alcohol campaigns targeting long term effects of alcohol have proven ineffective to young people 8. Using the areas of the Ottawa Charter, identify the various health promotion strategies mentioned to improve the health of young people. 9. If physical activity rates and servings of vegetables have increased over time, explain why obesity levels have continued to increase 10. You have been asked as part of the NSW Youth Advisory Council to predict the future health trends for young people and propose strategies to combat issues that impact on the health of young people. Propose strategies young people can undertake to reduce alcohol related injuries 8. Create a poster that can be displayed on the back of a toilet door to educate young people about the dangers of binge drinking 9. Outline first aid procedures that a young person can give should a friend fall ill from alcohol 10. Critically analyse why Australian s have no problem taking a stronger, even more moralistic attitude to smoking and smokers than to people consuming alcohol

5 Read the articles relating to the debate on increasing the taxes on cigarettes and answer the following questions 1. Discuss why the opposite is proposing the increased tax on cigarettes 2. Assess the effectiveness of increasing the cigarette tax would have on the health of young people 3. Considering the principles of social justice, is it fair to increase the cost of cigarettes to keep the private health insurance 30% rebate? 4. Imagine you are the Prime Minister of Australia. Critically analyse the role increasing cigarette taxes would have not only on young people, but society in general
