2 What is nutrition? Eating the proper balance of nutrients! carbohydrates, proteins,fats, vitamins, minerals, fiber, and water help the body function properly.
3 What is needed for overall general health of the body? Balanced Diet Regular Exercise
4 Tips for a balanced diet: *reduce the number of fats and sugars you eat. Fats can cause heart disease and clog arteries! Too much sugar can lead the diabetes. *Eat lots of fiber(fruits and veggies)- this helps push food through your digestive system *Eat lots of fruits, vegetables, and lean protein
5 Calories Calories.wmv Units to measure food energy The amount of calories a person needs is based on body weight, age, gender, activity level, and health
6 Metabolism brainpop the set of chemical reactions involved in storing food and turning it into energy *Food must first be oxidized (combined with O 2)
7 Basal Metabolic Rate The amount of energy required to maintain minimum life functions while at rest Basically its how many calories your body will burn if you stay in bed all day! BMR calculator
8 Low BMR (who therefore burns fewer calories while at rest or sleeping) will tend to gain more pounds of body fat over time then people with average or high BMR Average BMR who eats the same amount of food and gets the same amount of exercise won't gain as much weight High BMR can eat more and exercise less then others and still not gain much weight Exercise to increase your BMR!
9 3 factors contribute to your metabolic rate or how your body uses energy: 1. BMR accounts for 60% of energy used by the body 2. Daily physical activities account for 30% 3. 10% is used to digest and oxidize food
10 What happens if someone consumes more calories than the body uses? The excess is stored and weight is gained
11 How does someone lose weight? when fewer calories are taken in than the body needs
12 To burn food into energy, you MUST have OXYGEN! Your systems work together! How? Respiratory system takes in O 2. Digestive system breaks down food into glucose Circulatory delivers it to your cells Circulatory picks up the CO 2 drops it off at the lungs Respiratory system breathes it out
13 How does exercise help? *increases your heart rate so that more oxygen is provided for the body to use to break down food *good muscle tone *bone strength *If you eat a well balanced diet, it will improve the ability to exercise
14 A healthy body requires a delicate balance between a healthy diet and physical activity How do we do this? Energy In = Energy Out Calories taken in = Calories burned or used
15 Food that you eat has 3 fates: 1. used to fuel metabolic activities and physcial activities 2. incorporated into growing body tissues 3. stored as fat
16 What do I need in order to be a healthy growing adolescent? *More food energy should be consumed than just what you need for metabolism or physical activities *If you don't take in enough calories, it can affect metabolic activities, body weight, growth, tissue formation, and health.
