2 Q. Where do toxins come from? A toxin is defined as any substance that causes harmful effects to our body. Normally, the immune system, liver and kidneys work together to remove toxins at the same rate as they are encountered. When toxin levels are in excess of our body s capacity to remove them, toxins build up and are stored until they are removed. We can have toxins stored in our bodies for years without experiencing any negative symptoms, but once the burden of toxins becomes too high, we start to feel ill. We tend to think about toxins coming from environmental sources such as exhaust fumes, solvents and inhalants, but it is important to consider the other numerous, less apparent toxin-producing sources we are exposed to on a daily basis. These include toxins from our lifestyle, toxins created within our bodies (internal toxins) and toxins created from our emotions. Toxins come from toxic chemicals from environmental pollution, pesticides, food additives, preservatives in our body care products and prescription drugs. Toxins can come from chemicals in your home. Keep all chemicals tightly sealed and choose more environmentally safe products. Be aware of possible chemical-based personal care products including toothpaste, soap, body and facial creams can have toxic preservatives, perfumes and fragrances that may cause cancer and hormonal imbalances. Everyday we are exposed to thousands of chemicals from environmental pollution, pesticides, food additives, preservatives in our body care products and prescription drugs. When the body has trouble keeping up with releasing the influx of toxic substances they will store them in the body tissue and cause health imbalances. Other ways that toxins may take their toll on the body is by weakening important organs and causing more imbalances. The leading detoxification principle is that illnesses can be caused by the build-up of toxic substances. Ridding the body of these toxins can help relieve symptoms, strengthen the immune system, prevents illness, increases your overall health, longevity and vitality. Q. How does detoxification support the immune system and help our Bodies cleanse from environmental toxins? Detox therapy is also useful for those suffering from immune system problems that including chronic fatigue syndrome, environmental illness/multiple chemical sensitivity, and fibromyalgia. The United States Center for Disease Control estimates that over 80% of all illnesses have environmental and lifestyle causes. Therefore, detox has also become a prominent therapy as people have become more aware of environmental pollution. For 2

3 example, it is estimated that one in every four Americans suffers from some level of heavy metal poisoning, including mercury, lead, cadmium and aluminum. Toxins in the body also include chemical pollutants such as pesticides, DDT, PCB Q. What will happen when I detox? When the body detoxifies sometimes a person can experience a cleansing reaction as toxins flush out into the blood and lymphatic fluid. A person s body may detoxify through the skin with a temporary rash or small reddish bumps. Some may release through mucous with a runny nose, have darker urine, gas, bad breathe headaches or feel tired. One may feel that they are sick even through it is not an infection. Drinking lots of water can help reduce any cleansing reactions since the body will then be better able to get toxins to the liver and kidneys and more effectively release them through urine. Q. How can I detox my body with Ionic Footbaths and Far-Infrared? Saunas? These are two ways to detox your body on your own or with the help of therapeutic methods. These are two simple, painless, comfortable and soothing methods that aids in the detoxification process. See the DETOX page for details. Q. Why is it important to drink healthy water for detoxification? Tap water from water treatment facilities put chemicals in the water to kill harmful bacteria and viruses. It is a good idea to drink only purified water or use a water purifier that takes the chemicals out. If the body is not sufficiently hydrated, the cells will draw water from the bloodstream, thus pressurizing and burdening the heart. Even mild dehydration prevents the kidneys from effectively purifying the blood. When this happens, some of the kidney's workload is passed on to the liver and other organs, and may cause them to be severely stressed. Minor health conditions such as constipation, dry and itchy skin, acne, nosebleeds, urinary tract infections, coughs, sneezing, sinus problems and headache may develop as a consequence. It is no secret that drinking half your body weight in ounces of water a day can dramatically improve your health, and the signs will be obvious: Glowing complexion and clear skin, better immunity, better digestion, less aches and pains, weight loss, less cellulite, better concentration and renewed vitality and energy. Most detox regimes recommend flooding the body with purified or filtered water, rather than the bottled kind. Infusing the body with water will immediately stimulate your kidneys, liver and digestive system s (primary detox organs) functions. It will boost your metabolism, which in turn accelerates toxin and fat elimination. 3

4 Q. How can healthy eating help us avoid more toxic overload? It goes without saying that if we want to detoxify our systems, we should first stop putting toxins into our bodies. It is wise to avoid foods that are treated with synthetic fertilizers and pesticides and animal products in which the animals were raised on hormones and antibiotics. Avoid artificial food additives and preservatives. Organic fruits, vegetables, nuts, oils and foods high in animal fats: butter, cheese, dairy, milk and meats. Reduce or eliminate highly processed and refined foods. When choosing fats: Choose Monounsaturated fats which include: Olive, peanut or canola oil, nuts and seed. Polyunsaturated fates which include: Vegetable Oils like safflower, corn & sunflower or nuts and seeds. Omega-3 fatty acids which include coldwater fish, salmon, mackerel, herring and flaxseeds, flax ail and walnuts. Sugar, food high in carbohydrates and caffeine are also energy thieves, as excess amounts of them cause a spike in energy, followed by a crash. People often respond by having more, leading to a cycle of dependency. Eating less or eliminating sugar and caffeine can cause unpleasant physical symptoms initially. However, the resulting surge in energy is well worth the effort. See Try to store food in food-grade plastic or glass Pyrex containers. Do not cook with lowcost non-stick Teflon cookware or use in microwave ovens. Q. How Can Oil Pulling With Coconut Oil help your body detoxify? In my research I found out that oil pulling with coconut oil is one of the best ways to eliminate toxins from the body. It is safe, simple, cheap and gentle and the benefits range from bringing health to your mouth by ridding the mouth of harmful toxins and bacteria, to a method that cures and preventing disease. This procedure is gaining more and more popularity as people are finding success and positive results. The basics involve pulling and swishing 1 tablespoon of Coconut Oil for up to 20 Min, then spitting it out in the toilet or a garbage can and not the sink because of the bacteria. Oil pulling is based in Ayurvedic medicine and most recently oil pulling was introduced in 1992 by Dr. F. Karach, MD. who claims that oil pulling helps the whole body? He sites results with terminal diseases such as cancer, aids and chronic infections. According to the African Journal of Microbiology Research, oil pulling is an effective defense against the bacteria associated with dental caries (tooth decay). Studies show that it has also been beneficial in the elimination of bleeding gums, the fastening of loose teeth and the visible whitening of the teeth. Many advocates of oil pulling suggest safflower, sunflower or vegetable oil, but more and more studies and successes are finding higher quality oils are more effective. The anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal properties of whole, extra virgin coconut oil makes it the perfect choice for oil pulling and certainly is gaining popularity. 4

5 Q. How does Dry Skin Brushing help us detoxify our whole body? It is well known that the skin is the largest organ in the body and is responsible for onefourth of the body's detoxification each day, also making it, one of the most important elimination organs. The skin is also known as the "3rd" kidneys and the lungs are known as the "2nd" kidneys. Skin brushing helps your lymph system to clean itself of the toxins that collect in the lymph glands and help stimulate and energize the surface circulation of the skin. Dead skin cells are sloughed off and the pores of the skin open and encourage your body's discharge of metabolic wastes resulting in an improved ability to combat bacteria, plus helping your skin to be more resilient, look and feel healthier. Skin Brushing is a great self-help treatment. Q. How do Epsom Salt Baths help us to detox? Epsom salts can draw toxins out of your body. Start with a very clean tub, take a shower first, and then fill the tub with the hottest water you can stand. Begin with l/4 cup of Epsom salts, work up gradually to 4 cups, and as long as l/2 hour. If you experience light-headedness, drain the tub, and wait until you feel steady to leave the tub. Otherwise, take a shower after and dry off with a clean towel. With dry skin brushing, essential oils and soothing music, this can be a luxurious, yet inexpensive detox technique. Q. How does Massage and Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) help us detox our lymph system? Massage, Acupressure Hot Stone and Sound Massage all help cleanse and balance the body.
