2 INTRODUCTION Recently, I read about the benefits of eating apples. The old adage, an apple a day keeps the doctor away is still ringing true today. Eating an apple could potentially reduce blood cholesterol levels; prevent artery- clogging, blood clot to the lungs, and supply fiber and antioxidants to your body. Food is medicine Our body is an amazing machine that produces over 300 billion cells every 24 hours. It has an amazing way to repair, reenergize, rebuild, and rejuvenate. New cells are replacing old cells every two to seven years. Each has a different life cycle and rate of renewing and regenerating. In other words, we (our body) are constantly undergoing changes inside without us even knowing it. The question is how are we helping in these rebuilding and renewing processes? Are we eating the right foods and having enough nutrients to support our body? What we eat is extremely important to our total wellbeing. We need all the right types and amount of nutrients to help build healthy cells. If there is deficiency, abnormal cells will be produced and serious health issues, chronic health problems and many other complications may start to show up. Often times it may not be detected until it is too late! Sometimes a good report may not mean you are ok. My uncle had a great report from his doctor. He had no health complaints, lived an active lifestyle but a week after visiting his doctor he died of a heart attack. His disease was not diagnosed. 3 Food If you or your family does not like good- for- you foods, there is really no point of having a list of them. Let s face it you list, plan, buy and cook and no one will eat them at the end. What good is that? But you still want to eat healthy. Junk food will be the first in the list in your foods elimination process. According to Princeton s website, junk food tastes good but is high in calories and has little nutritional value. They are high in fat, sodium and sugar. The high level of salt and sugar in junk food puts your metabolism, heart, liver, pancreas and other organs into stress. With little nutritional value, it makes your body crave for more food and feeling fatigued and tired. Food high in sodium, sugar and fat are the cause of obesity, rise of diabetes and health problems among children and adults. 4 Try these three healthy junk foods Dark chocolate Flavonoid is an important antioxidant found in dark chocolate. It helps lower blood pressure, heart disease and neurodegenerative diseases. The cocoa content of your dark chocolate should be above 70%. Homemade sweet potato fries Thinly slice sweet potato and bake them with olive oil and sea salt. Sweet potatoes are rich in vitamin A, beta- carotene, antioxidant and fiber. They are good for heart and reduce the risk of cancer. Homemade beef jerky (or turkey jerky) Beef is a good source of protein. With a food dehydrator, a piece of lean flank steak, some sea salt and seasoning. You are getting the protein you need and satisfy your cravings of junk food with homemade beef jerky. 5 Some facts about food we need to consider 1. Food can heal or make us sick. 2. Food is medicine. 3. Food produced in the United States and many parts of the world are grown in soil that is depleted of nutrients. Most foods grown today have less than 40-50% of the vitamins found 10 years ago. If it is not organically certified, they may contain pesticides and toxins. 4. What you put in your body will determine the condition of your health. Food grown today According to Scientific American s article Dirt poor: Have fruits and vegetables become less nutritious? modern intensive agricultural methods have stripped increasing amounts of nutrients from the soil in which the food we eat grows. This fast- growing, pest- resistant method is less good for us than before. The U.S. Department of Agriculture studied the nutritional data of 43 different vegetables and fruits from 1950 and 1999 and found a decline in the amount of protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron, riboflavin (vitamin B2), and vitamin C. We have a soil depletion problem in growing our food. Since 1994, genetically modified foods started showing up in our grocery stores. Scientists create GMO foods by adding one or more genes to the plant for the purpose of drought or cold tolerance, disease resistance or faster growth. Animals for meat are raised in confined spaces and fed with GMO foods. There is hardly any grass fed, free roaming naturally fed animals in the market today. 6 DIET The word diet has two meanings. One means the kinds of food we eat daily and the other is about restrictions and special kinds of foods we consume to lose weight. In this report, I m referring to both. Having a healthy body does not mean restrictions alone. It is about embracing the food groups that are good for your health and practice moderation in our eating habits. Eat what you love and you will lose more pounds. It is easier when you keep your favorite foods in your list when you are on a diet. Losing weight is not about losing out on your favorite foods. Know what you like and eat what you like. If you are eating what you hate you are not going to lose weight or stick with it. It is not the lack of motivation but the wrong thinking about diets that hinder you from losing weight. When you are deprived and restricted from all the foods you crave for, you violate your body s needs. The negative signals of starvation and dissatisfaction may send a stress message to your brain and body. 7 If you take away a type of fat you must replace it with another type of fat. For example, if you take away margarine, you need to replace it with flaxseed oil, extra virgin olive oil or other good oils. Eat real food and don t count calories. Look for a diet that you will enjoy. Going on a diet is a holistic involvement of your body, mind and spirit. To get healthy and fit we need to consider the three areas of our being. Let s take a look at three types of diet that are easy to follow Mediterranean diet - Olive oil, a glass of wine, fruits, vegetables, fish, whole grain, nuts, seeds and spices are part of the Mediterranean diet. Red meat is limited and butter and margarine are replaced with extra virgin olive oil. Mediterranean diet reduces the risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease, lower low- density lipoprotein (bad cholesterol) Parkinson s, Alzheimer s and prevents other chronic diseases. People following this diet have 70% less heart attacks and strokes and those who followed the Mediterranean diet for three weeks found significant improvement in their overall health. This is one of my recommended diets. It is easy to follow and you are not deprived of your favorites. Enjoy your meals with friends and family over a glass of red wine. Atkins diet - This diet reduces carbs and increases protein and fat. Atkins diet believe that sugar, white flour and other refined carbs will lead to cardiovascular problems, blood sugar imbalances and weight gain. This diet will help you lose weight initially. I believe it should be monitored and it s not good for a long- term diet. Hallelujah diet - According to Hallelujah Acres website, the Hallelujah diet is a menu of 85% raw, uncooked and unprocessed plant- based food and 15% cooked plant- based food. This diet believes that our digestive tract cannot digest and dispose meat. Undigested meat can be trapped in our stomach and cause toxicity, which results in diseases. It is a vegetarian diet consisting of fresh almond milk, grains, beans, sprouted beans, nuts, seeds, extra virgin olive oil, flaxseed oil, avocados, and seasonings like garlic, sweet onions, parsley, vegetables and fruits. 7 Food & Nutrition for Healthy Living: 5 Revealing Truths That Will Change the Way You Age & Feel
8 Since food is our medicine, choose your diet wisely. These diets are not about weight loss or weight reduction alone, it is about designing a healthy way of eating to prevent diseases and live a healthier life. Don t try to speed up when you start off with a new diet. Do it consistently and change slowly and never let your stomach go empty or suffer from hunger pangs. 9 SUPPLEMENTS What is nutrition and what do we know about nutrition and supplements? Nutrition is all the processes involved in the taking in and utilization of food substances by which growth, repair, and maintenance of activities in the body as a whole or in any of its parts are accomplished. It includes indigestion, digestion, absorption, and metabolism. Some nutrients are capable of being stored in the body in various forms and drawn upon when the food intake is not sufficient. Nutrients help our body processes, combat diseases and repair tissue. Years ago, we got nutrients totally from our food, but not today. Proper nutrients supplements are needed to deal with all the dead food that has little nutritional value. Nutrients are also needed to combat chemical and pesticides found in our food. If our body is deficient in a certain nutrient, the body part may suffer and have malfunction eventually diseases may arise. 10 Good nutrition is the foundation of our health. That is why we need nutritional supplements! Remember, nutritional supplements cannot replace 100% of good food or cover up bad eating habits. 13 DISEASES Diseases happen because of many reasons. Some of the symptoms you are experiencing may be due to a variety of illnesses or disorders. We need to learn to listen to our body and stop the problem before they become unmanageable. The majority of diseases are related back to the foods we eat or don t eat, our lifestyle, choices in life, stresses and hereditary. If we eat a high fat diet, the fat will go to the arteries and in the long run inflammation and clotting happens. Because blood can t get through the blocked artery, oxygen and nutrition get cut off from the tissues and they get sick which eventually leads to malfunction like a heart attack, high blood pressure and stroke. For years, research has been showing that the #1 cause of heart disease, heart attacks, strokes and vascular disease (and virtually all our diseases) is not fat but inflammation. So lowering fat and cholesterol by itself is not the answer. Sugars, fried, bakery foods, fast and processed foods, eating too much, eating wheat that is abnormally high in gluten that is not what we used to eat will produce stress and inflammation, especially inflammatory fat in our bellies that is causing insulin resistance, obesity, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and heart disease. That s what is happening to our kids and to adults in the US. Many people who are sick and start on a pill (medication), once they start, they need more pills and more diseases will happen. The body will change because of the medication taken. It is a vicious cycle of pain, breakdown and problem in the body.
