Argumentative Essay Notes Range = 3-10 (out of 10 see posted Argumentation Rubric & side board for score & points). Points out of 50 are entered in PS. Prompt: Argue whether or not people should adopt the vegan lifestyle. Can you choose both? No! AP = Address the prompt! Argue yes or no & support with textual evidence from the provided articles! What is the first sentence in your intro.? Yes, your hook/attention getter! Sample hooks: Across the world, populations of poverty stricken and mentally-ill human beings battle the effects of nutritional deficiency and suffer the health risks of surviving on a desperate diet; and yet, the next big American health trend is to deprive the body of these vital minerals by choice. Thanks, Caitlin B.!
Taking the path less traveled has been a wise phrase preached for generations, but it s not so wise in the case of veganism. Thanks, Matt! Now what do you do after providing an effective hook/attention getter (2 parts)? Tell your table partner! Sample Thesis Statements: Veganism, while viewed as the heathier diet option, lacks crucial vitamins and minerals, which can ultimately result in a myriad of health issues throughout life. Thanks, Brooke! A vegan diet is imperative in spearheading a healthy life because of its robust benefits. Thanks, Crystal! Now, let s put it all together!
Across the world, populations of poverty stricken and mentally-ill human beings battle the effects of nutritional deficiency and suffer the health risks of surviving on a desperate diet; and yet, the next big American health trend is to deprive the body of these vital minerals by choice. The idealization of a plantstrong diet by the media is misleading and often overlooked, but the growing percentage of dieters experiencing the adverse effects of a vegan lifestyle is becoming an overwhelming source, bringing in to question the validity of the research that supports this restrictive regime and how it truly intervenes with human processes. Veganism may be a step forward from the modern commercialized diet of our recent generations, but it is a concerning shift in the wrong direction when broken down by its own respective health risks. A healthy, balanced diet is the basis of nutrition; veganism must be reconsidered as an intentional denial of critical substances to the human body in favor of underdeveloped and often biased theories. Effective hook, narrowing, & thesis! What is Caitlin s claim?
Another Sample Introduction: Thousands of mothers are watching savage humans ruthlessly butcher their innocent children to satisfy humans undying hunger. The imprisonment of vulnerable animals pose many grave ethical questions of mankind. In addition, the colossal meat consumption engenders many health concerns. A vegan diet is imperative in spearheading a healthy life because of its robust benefits. Thanks, Crystal! General Notes: Effective/clear thesis statements/claims! Good lead-ins & introduction of sources to establish credibility/ethos! E.g. Dr. Drew Ramsey, an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at Columbia University, claims Veganism s total exclusion of animal... Thanks, Shiv!
Effective inclusion of counterclaim/cc (opposition s side) & rebuttal (reason(s) they are wrong)! Toulmin structure here. Counterclaim AND rebuttal must be in the same paragraph! Why? Tell your table partner go! Yes, it is confusing extoling the benefits of the opposition s side without refuting it immediately. E.g. CC/counterclaim w/ rebuttal excerpt... more than half of vegans tested were deficient in vitamin B12, putting them at risk of mental heath problems such as fatigue, poor concentration, decreased brain volume with aging and irreversible nerve damage. However, these claims about veganism s long-term health impacts simply cannot and have not been substantiated due to the relative youth of the vegan diet.... Thanks, Jalan! Remember to use powerful diction/word choices! Word choices impact your score! Use sophistical diction always!
Do you cite paraphrased sentences/material? Tell your table partner! Yes!!! You need to give credit to the source for that info. you used in your paper EVEN IF IT IS IN YOUR OWN WORDS! Do we use 2 nd person point of view/pov in academic papers????????? Also, we & us = 1 st person POV! Let s make a pledge so Mrs. Bondi doesn t get a nervous twitch grading our next essay! What is wrong with the sentence below? Tell your table partner. Rip Esselstyn, author of The Engine 2 Diet, claims that plant proteins do not cannibalize our bones, promote cancer or increase inflammation like animal proteins do (Esselstyn). Yes, if you use the source s name in the lead-in, you do NOT use PD!
What do you do in your body paragraphs? What is the structure? First sentence, weaving in??, last sentence? Yes, topic sentence/ts (NOT a quote), weave in textual evidence with PD or lead-in AND analysis/commentary, and a concluding sentence/cs (again, NOT a quote). Student sample: Rip Esselstyn, a former professional athlete, argues that plant proteins do not cannibalize our bones, promote cancer or increase inflammation like animal proteins do and instead, provide all the necessary nutrients that the body needs. Thanks, Brooke! NO DROPPED QUOTES/QUOTES BY THEMSELVES!
Let s Review! Body paragraphs what do you begin with? Yes, a topic sentence/ts NOT A QUOTE! End with? Yes, a concluding sentence/cs that summarizes the paragraph NOT A QUOTE! Pack in between? Yes, textual evidence woven in with your analysis/commentary! You must use this structure! Also, double-space essay & indent paragraphs PD = parenthetical documentation (Esselstyn). Tell your table partner what verbs we want to avoid AND 2 powerful verb choices. Yes, says and stated are BORING! Use the Power Verbs chart!!!! Examples: claims, acknowledges, contends, maintains, responds, argues, etc.
What do we do in the Conclusion? The combined physical and emotional conflicts brought on intentionally by the vegan lifestyle are concerning and pose a genuine threat to health enthusiasts of the next generation who fail to recognize the lack of research and the effects of this deprivation on their own bodies. It is important that everyone practice their human right to make their own eating decisions, but the modern alternatives available and the proven inefficiency of supplements clearly point to the need for significant improvement of the nutritional theories that support complete veganism. Nutritional deficiency is a war many have been fighting for their entire lives; don t let it become the goal of our young and fittest. Thanks, Caitlin B.
Adulation & Candy 9-10 = A (lots of 8 s ) Per. 4 Ava, Brooke, Tim, & Savannah Per. 5 Tania, Matt, Shiv, Jalan, Kaydin, & Carissa Per. 6 Caitlin B., Hamzah, Natalie, Crystal, Laya, & Amay
