Kesler Science Station Lab Excretory System If you have never used my Kesler Science Station Labs before please download the FREE Start-Up pack from my TPT store. It will provide you with all of the signage and best practices in order to run the station labs in your classroom. You can read my complete guide to how run effective station labs on my blog. The large directions cards included in this file are intended to be read by the leader of the group once the students get to the station. The smaller task cards can be read by another group member. I prefer that each student do their own lab write-up (included at the end of this file), so that they may use it for reference at a later date. The answer key is provided at the end of the document. Lastly, if any of the internet resources no longer work for some reason please let me know via at chris@keslerscience.com. I cannot guarantee that all resources will be available, but I tried to choose ones that have been around for many years.

Filtering the blood to remove unwanted waste B. Moving of urine from the kidneys to the bladder C. Creating urine within the small intestine and moving it to the large intestine D. Removing urine from the bladder out the urethra What is the function of the bladder in the excretory system? A. To filter blood and remove waste B. To store urine prior to removal C. To transport urine from the kidneys D. To create urine A. Skeletal B. Endocrine C. Circulatory D. Digestive The excretory system works directly with the system to allow blood to be filtered in the kidneys.
Read It! Station Directions Each member of the group will read the passage and answer the questions from the task cards on the lab sheet in the Read It! section. It is important to remember that the answers will come directly from the reading passage.
The Importance of Hydration Your body depends on water to survive. Every cell, tissue, and organ in your body needs water to work correctly. For example, your body uses water to maintain its temperature, remove waste, and lubricate joints. Water is needed for good health. Water makes up more than half of your body weight. You lose water each day when you go to the bathroom, sweat, and even when you breathe. You lose water even faster when the weather is really hot, when you are physically active, or if you have a fever. Vomiting and diarrhea can also lead to rapid water loss. If you don t replace the water you lose, you can become dehydrated. Symptoms of dehydration include the following: little or no urine, or urine that is darker than usual, dry mouth, sleepiness or fatigue, extreme thirst, headaches, confusion, and dizziness. You may have heard different recommendations for daily water intake. Most people have been told they should drink 6 to 8 8-ounce glasses of water each day, which is a reasonable goal. However, different people need different amounts of water to stay hydrated. Most healthy people can stay well hydrated by drinking water and other fluids whenever they feel thirsty. For some people, fewer than 8 glasses may be enough. Other people may need more than 8 glasses each day. If you are concerned that you are not drinking enough water, check your urine. If your urine is consistently colorless or light yellow, you are most likely staying well hydrated. Dark yellow or amber-colored urine is a sign of dehydration. For most people, water is all that is needed to maintain good hydration. However, if you are planning on exercising at a high intensity for longer than an hour, a sports drink may be helpful. It contains carbohydrates and electrolytes that can increase your energy and help your body absorb water. Choose a sports drink wisely. They are often high in calories from added sugar and may contain high levels of sodium. Also, check the serving size. One bottle may contain several servings. Sports drinks are not the same as energy drinks. Energy drinks usually contain large amounts of caffeine and other stimulants (for example, guarana, ginseng, or taurine) that your body doesn't need. Most of these drinks are also high in added sugar. Many experts recommend that children and teens should not have energy drinks.
Which is not a reason humans need to stay hydrated? Someone who has dark yellow or brown urine most likely has this problem. A. Removal of liquid waste B. Maintain a steady temperature C. Lubricate joints D. Provide Vitamin C to the body A. Liver cancer B. Kidney disease C. Not well hydrated D. Nerve damage Which is the most reasonable amount of water you should drink each day? A. 1, 8-oz glass B. 2, 8-oz glasses C. 6-8, 8-oz glasses D. More than 12, 8-oz glasses Why are sports drinks not always the best substitute for water? A. Only athletes need them B. They have less nutrients than water C. They can contain excess amounts of sodium and sugar D. Sports drinks make you go to the bathroom more
Watch It! Station Directions Each member of the group will go to the website listed on task card #1 Complete the task cards in order. Every student will answer the questions from the task cards on the lab sheet in the Watch It! section of the lab sheet.
YouTube: G Drive: URL is case-sensitive 1. Click Play on the video. 2. Answer questions from cards #2-4 on your lab sheet. What are the 4 main body parts in the excretory system? YouTube Briefly describe how the excretory system removes waste from the body. How can you tell if you are hydrated enough?
Research It! Station Directions Each member of the group will go to the website listed on task card #1 Complete the task cards in order. Every student will answer the questions from the task cards on the lab sheet in the Research It! section.
1. Go to Answer the following questions on your lab sheet. 1. Read the first paragraph and summarize the structure (parts) and function of the Excretory (Urinary) System. 1. Describe the kidneys and how they function in the body. 2. List 4 other internal conditions in which the kidneys monitor to help to maintain homeostasis?
Explore It! Station Directions One member of the group will read the task cards in order. The group will be responsible for completing each of the tasks that are being read. Each member of the group will then write their conclusions down on the lab sheet in the Explore It! section.
Use diagram #1 and #2 for the following questions. 1. What body system is represented in the diagrams? 2. What do you think the main purpose of that system is? The function of the excretory system is to filter the waste out of the blood and remove it from the body. It is sometimes called the urinary system. The kidneys are the bean-shaped organ near the top of the diagram. Their job is to filter out waste from the blood and send the urine away for removal. 1. Do you think we need both kidneys to survive? After the urine has been created it is sent down the ureters (small tubes that connect the kidney and bladder) to the bladder. The bladder acts as a storage for urine until it gets to the point where it fills up and needs to be removed. From there it is sent out the urethra and out of the body. 1. Use the diagrams to describe the process of how urine is created and removed from the body. 2. What role does hydration (drinking enough water) play throughout the human body?
Diagram #1 Diagram #2
Illustrate It! Station Directions Each member of the group will draw a quick sketch on the lab sheet that shows they understand the concept being taught. Use the colored pencils and markers that are provided. The directions for the sketch are provided on the task card at the table.
Illustrate It! Station Directions 1. Use the diagram at the table to help you fill in the diagram on your lab sheet. Draw the excretory system. 2. Be sure to correctly label your diagram. 3. Off to the side of the diagram list the specific function of the excretory system.

Organize It! Station Directions It is recommended that you have completed at least two of the following stations before working at this station. -Read It! -Explore It! -Watch It! -Research It! Use the 8 cards and put them into the correct pairs. Have your teacher check your work and sign off on your lab sheet.

Excretory System Answer Key Explore It! Task Card #1 1. Excretory System 2. Student answers will vary but they should be able to tell you about filtering and removing waste Task Card #2: 1. We do not need both kidneys to survive. The National Kidney Foundation says people can live totally normal lives with one kidney. You can live with no kidneys but will have to get on Write It! dialysis. Task Card #4: 1. After reading the cards, students should be able to look at the diagram and tell you that blood is filtered in the kidneys and urine is created. From there it travels down the ureter and is stored temporarily in the bladder. When the bladder fills up it is released out of the body through the urethra. 2. Water plays an important role in all of our body systems. Every cell needs water. It also helps in the aid of digestion, to regulate chemical levels, and is necessary for removal of waste through the urinary system. Write It! Task Card #1: 1. The excretory system is the system that includes the kidneys, ureter, bladder, and urethra. The kidneys filter the blood to remove waste and then send the waste down the ureter in the form of urine. It ends up in the bladder until it s ready to be removed from the body via the urethra. 2. The excretory system works directly with the circulatory system to remove waste from the blood. As blood flows through the kidneys it is filtered and clean blood is put back into the circulatory system. 3. Hydration plays a role in the entire body, but it s specifically needed in the excretory system to help flush out waste in the form or urine.
Excretory System Answer Key Illustrate It! The main function of the excretory system is to filter blood and remove liquid waste from the body.. Assess It! #1 A #3 B Research It! #2 C #4 C Task Card #1 1. The urinary system consists of the kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, and urethra. The kidneys filter the blood to remove wastes and produce urine. The ureters, urinary bladder, and urethra together form the urinary tract, which acts as a plumbing system to drain urine from the kidneys, store it, and then release it during urination. Besides filtering and eliminating wastes from the body, the urinary system also maintains the homeostasis of water, ions, ph, blood pressure, calcium and red blood cells. Read It! #1 D #3 C #2 C #4 C Task Card #2 1. The kidneys are a pair of bean-shaped organs found along the posterior wall of the abdominal cavity. The left kidney is located slightly higher than the right kidney because the right side of the liver is much larger than the left side. The kidneys, unlike the other organs of the abdominal cavity, are located posterior to the peritoneum and touch the muscles of the back. The kidneys are surrounded by a layer of adipose that holds them in place and protects them from physical damage. The kidneys filter metabolic wastes, excess ions, and chemicals from the blood to form urine. 2. Ions, ph, Osmolality, Blood pressure Organize It! Answers are lined up correctly on the diagram to the right
Excretory System Answer Key Watch It! Task Card #2: 1. Kidneys, Ureter, Bladder, and Urethra Task Card #3: 1. Blood is filtered in the kidneys to remove the waste. The waste then travels down the ureter and to the bladder. Once the bladder is full the urine travels out the urethra and exits the body. Task Card 4: 1. If you are hydrated your urine will be a light yellow or maybe even clear. The less hydrated you are the darker your urine will be. If you have very dark urine you are likely not well hydrated.
