Commitment to Research

The Policy Landscape

Proposed CACFP Meal Pattern Changes: Focus on Grains Infants Allow additional grain options for infant snacks One Year and Older Require that at least one grain serving per day, across all eating occasions, be whole grain or whole grain-rich Require breakfast cereals to conform to WIC requirements Prevent grain-based desserts from counting towards the grains component Allow an optional meat or meat alternate to be served at breakfast in lieu of some grains

Whole Grain Decision Tree Meal Pattern Resources United States Department of Agriculture National CACFP Sponsors Association Source: USDA

Grains in the DGA A healthy eating pattern includes grains, at least half of which are whole grains. Healthy US-Style Eating Pattern at the 2,000 Calorie Level: 6-ounce equivalents of grains per day. Shift to eating more vegetables, fruits, whole grains and dairy to increase intake of nutrients of public health concern. Choosing both whole and refined grain foods in nutrient dense forms, such as bread instead of croissants and English muffins instead of biscuits can help in meeting recommendations for a healthy eating pattern. Most refined grains are enriched, a process that adds back iron and four B vitamins. Because of this process, the term enriched grains is often used to describe these refined grains.

What the DGA Means for You: General Insights Allow for a shift from single foods and ingredients to a greater focus on eating patterns (Healthy U.S. Style, Mediterranean, Vegetarian). Preview forthcoming industry trends and potential reformulation opportunities. For the first time, the guidelines take a solid stance on added sugar intake, recommending it be less than 10 percent of calories per day. Lay the groundwork for nutrition policy updates, such as the school meal program and WIC package guidelines.

Preparing for the Next Cycle GFF is coordinating with the Grain Chain on the following efforts: Participate in MyPlate National Strategic Partnership activities. Nominate individuals for the 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee. Conduct additional research on the health effects of consuming grains. Monitor the progress of the B 24 Months Project and enlist pediatrics expert for SAB.

Folic Acid Fortification of Enriched Grains 1998 Enriched grain fortification begins th anniversary of fortification: GFF launches Bread Trail PSA and Folic Acid Seal 2011 CDC names fortification as one of top 10 public health achievements of last decade 2013 Grains industry meeting at CDC offices in Atlanta; CDC showcases Bread Trail PSA as example of creative folic acid educational effort 2004 Launch of GFF 2011 GFF & Spina Bifida Association partnership begins 2012 GFF develops Spina Bifida University segment; presents at World Congress 2016 & beyond Healthy Baby Coalition planning

Shining the Spotlight on Fortification Folic acid-focused campaigns and messaging have been a consistent underpinning of GFF s work yearover-year, reflecting a deep industry commitment Efforts have included: PSA development Media outreach Strategic partnerships March of Dimes Spina Bifida Association SBCCN Social media promotion Spanish-language outreach Packaging seal
