Last week, roughly 150 Greek and non-greek students showed up to grill, chill, and ring in the new school year on the midway. The BBQ was hosted by Order of Omega, leadership honor society. I was extremely happy with the turnout of Greek Life members. 2 SEPTEMBER SPOTLIGHTS Get to know 2016 Panhellenic President: Taylor Hockman Major/Year: I am currently a senior majoring in Social Work with a Minor in Psychology What are your career plans? I plan to be working in Probation and within the court system. While also monitoring my own program through foster care. What is your favorite Greek Memory so far? My favorite Greek memory so far is Big and Lil reveal and was blessed with such a wonderful Big Sister! Share a fun fact/hidden talent you have! Fun Fact is I played college soccer and volleyball at two different colleges before coming here. What are you most looking forward to this year? I am looking forward to knowing everyone I can and making lasting memories before my last day of school ends forever. In your own words, why go Greek? I went Greek to become part of another group since I was not playing sports. I love being active and around others and after going to recruitment,i knew I had found a new little home for me with all of my lovely sisters!

3 SEPTEMBER SPOTLIGHTS Get to know 2016 IFC President: Da Shawn Long Major/Year: I am a third year student majoring in Nursing. My career plans are to work in the ICU for a few years to gain experience before going off to grad school for my Doctorate. I hope to have my own family practice one day. What is your favorite Greek memory so far? Since belonging to the Greek Life community here at Shepherd I ve accumulated so many pleasurable memories. Picking my favorite memory of all, would have to be the April, 2016 Relay for Life event held here at the Wellness Center following the inauguration of our 16th President, Dr. Hendrix. This day truly captured first hand the unity in Greek Life, everybody coming together for one cause, one purpose. What is a fun fact about you? A fun fact about me is that I am the first black IFC President here at this University, ever. What are you most looking forward to this year? What I am looking forward to the most this school year is, becoming the liaison between Greek Life and other organization here on campus. Why Go Greek? I say go Greek because the possibilities are endless! From the amount of new people you ll meet and friendships you ll establish. To the difference you ll make in yourself, the people around you and your community.

4 OFFICE OF GREEK AFFAIRS UNDERGOES IMPORTANT NAME CHANGE: Introducing: Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life You may have noticed the new title for the Office of Greek Affairs that has begun to permeate across campus. Shepherd University, like many schools across the nation such as Colorado State University and Kansas State University, has changed it s name in order to better reflect the goals and mission of the office. The new title removes cultural connotations that are often associate with the word Greek, and is more straightforward to students who may not understand what Greek Affairs are. Fraternity & Sorority Life Advisor Julia Flocco explains, At Shepherd, as in many other institutions, negativity within these associated organizations has spread. In changing the name, as well as many new initiatives, we are on our way to help re-brand the community and avoid the poor stigma that has grown around Greek Life. These groups are filled with amazing student leaders and our goal is to focus the University and community on the positive actions and contributions of Fraternity and Sorority Life. Please join us in the use of this exciting new title!
