Avenues of Club Vocational Community International Youth Weekly News and Announcements Hello Rotarians and Friends! I know that there are probably those in the Club who love to ski and play in the snow, but I have to say I m not one of them. I much prefer the kind of weather we are having now to shoveling snow and scrapping ice off the car windows. I am enjoying it while I can since it will come to an end far too soon. My personal thanks go out to Judy Masaki for selecting my favorite song this week Let There Be Peace on Earth. I love the message it brings us AND it s in my key! Dave Smith, one of my favorite Rotarians, continued on Fellowship today and shared some fun facts about January 20 th the Presidential inauguration (and, according to Kim Straniak, graduation at Trumbull Business College). Here you go The first presidential inauguration of George Washington was held in New York. Zachary Taylor s inauguration fell on a Sunday and because of his devout religious beliefs, it was moved to Monday. George Washington s speech was 135 words, the shortest speech on record. Chief Justice John Marshall holds the record for giving the most presidential oaths. William Henry Harrison died because of his inauguration. He delivered the longest speech in history in the middle of a driving snowstorm and contracted pneumonia. He passed away a month later. Now, don t you all feel so much smarter!! Dave also reminded members that we need one more person to handle Fellowship. If anyone is able to do so, please contact Dave at a meeting or at dsmit134@kent.edu. Membership Dues ONE FINAL REMINDER IS BEING SENT TO THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE NOT PAID YOUR JANUARY DUES. 3 Code of Conduct As a Rotarian, I will: Act with integrity and high ethical standards in my personal and professional life. Deal fairly with others and treat them and their occupations with respect. Use my professional skills through to mentor young people, help those with special needs, and improve people s quality of life in my community and the world. Avoid behavior that reflects adversely on or other Rotarians. Foundation Board Meeting The Foundation board will meet on Wednesday, January 25, 11:30 a.m. at Enzo s. Please confirm your attendance with Cheryl so we can be assured of a quorum. Slice of the Valley/Pizza Challenge Plans are well underway for the Slice of the Valley. We are asking Rotarians to donate or solicit items for the Silent Auction. Flyers and Sponsor Forms are now ready. Tickets should be available next week. A portion of the funds raised will be used toward our Uganda Project and toward Project Play at Highland Terrace. President Julia also informed the membership that Dr. Bipin Patel has challenged us to raise at least $10,000 for the Uganda Project through this event. If we do, he will match it! She also has had conversations with Dr. Picard and the District and through other grants we may actually be able to raise as much as $50,000 for the project. But it all rests on our ability to meet the $10,000 challenge. So, get out there and sell tickets, sponsor the event, and give a gift basket to the Auction. Every little bit will help. Anyone wishing to help with the event should contact Julia Wetstein so they can be included in any upcoming committee meetings. RI International Convention As you know, next year our club will be celebrating its 100 th anniversary. Julia Wetstein would love to have a booth at the Convention in the House of Friendship to let our closest 35,000+ friends know what we have accomplished in our first 100 years. The Convention will be held from June 10 to 14, The deadline for early registration is passed, but it s not too late to get registered. Expect to hear more about the upcoming convention in Atlanta, GA as the year goes by. Hospitality Suite at the District Conference President Julia announced that Warren would be hosting the Hospitality Suite at the District Conference next April. A committee has been identified and will be working on plans. More information will come as the year progresses. Please mark your calendars that the Conference will take place at Avalon Inn on April 7 and 8, There will also be Golf Outing held to benefit the Women Veteran s Golf Program.

Elaine is a graduate of YSU and is also an adjunct faculty member. Access Heath was the brain child of several area hospitals in 2010, at a time when hospitals were challenged in providing free medical care to those who were uninsured or underinsured. The agency provides services to those in both Trumbull and Mahoning Counties. They hold free health clinics in Youngstown and Warren one evening per month. Those eligible for services must have income that is 200% below the federal poverty level. Individuals are seen by appointment only. Access Health can also help individuals with health care or Medicaid applications. She said that Mercy Health has been a wonderful partner in this endeavor, as has Akron Children s Hospital, even though they only see individuals between 18 and 64 years of age. When Access Health first opened in 2010, they saw 400 patients that year. With the Affordable Care Act in place, the number declined. In 2016, for example, only 61 patients were treated, although many more were given referrals to other organizations for help in meeting their needs. Elaine said that the uncertain future of the Affordable Care Act could again have a significant impact on what they do. If the Act is repealed, the number of clients losing health care could cause them to again reach out to Access Health for help. The Clinic in Warren is located at 258 E. Market Street and the Clinic in Youngstown is at 345 Oak Hill Avenue.
