1 DSB WEEKLY NO. 616 December 22, 2003 A Chat With Maria Brumwell, Dental Assistant and Artist I find that I have painted my life things happening in my life without knowing. Georgia O Keeffe [1976] Maria Brumwell has two vocations: During the work week she is a dental assistant in the Department of Endodontics. At night and on weekends she is an artist. Maria has always been interested in art. She became serious about drawing in high school and since then has tried several mediums, including pen and ink, charcoal, interior design, and stenciling. Five years ago Maria began painting oils on canvas. Although she has taken some art classes and correspondence courses, Maria developed her talent by observing and recreating from photographs or drawings. Although she has done still life paintings or drawn abstract figures, florals remain her favorite subject of choice. She also repairs damaged religious statues by resculpting missing parts or revitalizing a statue with a fresh coat of paint. Some of Maria s favorite artists include Georgia O Keeffe, Salvador Dali and Claude Monet. She is intrigued by how these artists visualized their subject matter and represented their vision on canvas. Maria finds Dali intriguing because of his bizarre perception of subject matter. She enjoys the colors and beauty in O Keeffe s flowers, because the artist gave each painting an individual personality. Maria finds painting very therapeutic -- with some brush strokes she can express different emotions or evoke memories and experiences. That said, Maria adds, I need to be in a good mood to paint. Although others may not notice, Maria can easily identify a painting she completed while in a disagreeable mood. Maria draws inspiration from photographs. Her husband, Dale, a guitarist with the band, Third Degree, also inspires her because when they work together they feed each other creatively. At night when Dale is playing with the band, Maria will paint while listening to classical, alternative or soft rock music. Maria has been commissioned by several people to do a variety of interior designs including painting, customized stenciling and redecorating. Although she doesn t advertise, clients hear about her by word of mouth. She hopes one day to exhibit her paintings in local coffee houses or have a booth, for instance, at the UI Thieves Market. Maria s advice to aspiring artists: Don t worry about pleasing other people. Create what you enjoy. AADR Presenter Pre-Registration Deadline: January 19, 2004 The presenter pre-registration deadline is January 19, Please note: all presenters must pre-register. See page 2 of this issue for additional information. Local AADR Research Day February 17, 2004: Call for Abstracts All faculty, staff and students: the 51 st Annual Session of the Iowa Section of the AADR Research Day will be held Tuesday, February 17, 2004, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Lawrence Tabak, director, National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research. Abstracts of work note previously prevented should be in IADR/AADR paragraph form with authors, mentor(s) and the current status of the work. Since only a morning session will be provided this year, a review of the abstracts may be performed by the Research Committee. Oral, table clinic and poster presentations are being solicited. Abstracts should be delivered to Dr. Teresa Marshall s office (N335, Preventive & Community Dentistry). Please note: you do not need to have submitted a paper for the upcoming AADR/IADR meeting to present locally. Work that is in progress can also be presented. Numerous predoctoral and postdoctoral awards will be presented. The abstract deadline is 5:00 p.m. Friday, January 30, Please deliver abstracts to Dr. Theresa Marshall s office (N335 DSB). A reception will be held February 17, 2004, at the Holiday Inn and Conference Center. Awards will be presented at this time. All dentistry faculty, staff and students are invited to attend. Entrance format: Abstract submission in response to Call for Abstracts. Award: $500 each category Description: The Max Smith Award is presented annually to the top oral presentation in each category. Oral presentations are expected to highlight hypothesis driven research and include methods, results and conclusion sections. ADA TABLE CLINICS COMPETITION: Categories: a. Collegiate Dental Predoc b.
