Conference Presenters & Workshop Learning Objectives Larry A. Carver, M.D. Keynote Speaker The Brain, Psychotherapy and Amazing Grace (3 CE s) Dr. Carver is a Clinical Professor at the Kansas University Medical Center and represents both the Department of Psychiatry and Department of Neurology of KU Med. Additionally, he is the Director of the Neuroscience Brain Tissue Bank and Research Laboratory. Dr. Carver possesses the rare gift of being on the cutting edge of both psychotherapy and neuroscience. Obtain a basic understanding of the development of the brain and the effects that trauma has on this development; Develop an understanding of how neurons talk to each other and the potential change this communication has for growth; and, To look at the role of psychotherapy in the healing of the brain. Albert Buddy Poje, Ph.D. Assessment and Treatment of PTSD: Insights from Biopsychology (1.5 CE s) Albert Buddy Poje, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Psychology in the KUMC Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and a licensed psychologist in the state of Kansas. Currently, Dr. Poje serves as a staff psychologist for the adult inpatient psychiatry services. He practices within the areas of psychotherapy and psychological assessment with a focus on the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders within the context of adult psychiatry and consultation-liaison/health psychology. Dr. Poje s workshop will focus on an overview of the human stress response, including relevant psychopathology, psychophysiology and neurocognitive outcomes. The epidemiology of trauma and PTSD will be reviewed, including data concerning common risk factors (e.g. types of trauma) among men and women.
Dr. Poje s presentation will also review psychological assessments (including diagnostic and cognitive measures) that can assist in capturing the diagnosis and sequelae of severe traumatic outcomes (such as PTSD). Lastly, the presentation will review psychological and pharmacological treatments and potential outcomes. Increased understanding of the risk factors of negative psychological and psychiatric outcomes associated with trauma; Increased understanding of the neuroanatomy and biological factors that contribute to the psychological changes associated with traumatized patients; and, Greater awareness of assessment and treatment strategies applicable to this patient population. Brent L. Halderman, Ph.D. Integrating Behavioral Health and Primary Care (1.5 CE s) (3 Speaker Panel) Brent L. Halderman, Ph.D. is a psychologist with over 30 years of experience. He is in private practice with Kansas City Internal Medicine (KCIM) and is their Clinical Director of Behavioral Health. He has practiced in private practice medical settings since 1991 and consulted with several area hospital clinics. He is currently helping integrate behavioral health and primary care at KCIM as part of a Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH). James R. Eyman, Ph.D. Integrating Behavioral Health and Primary Care (3 Speaker Panel) James R. Eyman, Ph.D. is in private practice at the Heritage Mental Health Clinic in Topeka, Kansas. His practice involves seeing all ages for neuropsychological and psychological assessment and psychotherapy. He consults with several agencies, he has numerous publications, and he has presented on a variety of topics. Prior to entering private practice, he was a psychologist at the adult and childrens hospitals at Menninger.
Marianne Hudgins, M.D. Integrating Behavioral Health and Primary Care (3 Speaker Panel) Body and Mind: Integrations in Science and Practice Dr. Marianne Hudgins, M.D. has been a practicing Internist with Kansas City Internal Medicine for the past 14 years. In 2005 she participated in the planning and implementation of the electronic medical record system conversion and was the physician lead in the Patient-Centered Medical Home project initiated in As the current Medical Director of Quality Outcomes, Dr. Hudgins and her team are responsible for identifying needs, developing and implementing improvement strategies and monitoring outcomes to continually strengthen the Patient-Centered Medical Home model. There is increasing emphasis placed on addressing the behavioral health needs of patients in medical settings. For example, the Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) concept requires these issues be included in their overall care. This three speaker panel will discuss the mental health issues encountered in primary care as well as chronic disease states. It will explore how behavioral health providers and medical providers can better and more efficiently collaborate in patient care. Finally, ways to develop collaborative practice will also be discussed. Learn about mental health needs in medical patients; Learn what primary care physicians need to know from behavioral health providers about mutual patients; and, Learn ways to develop collaborative care with primary care. Jakob J. Nelson, Ph.D. Relaxation Training and Biofeedback-based Therapy (1.5 CE s) Jakob Nelson, PhD completed a Masters degree in Counseling Psychology and his Ph.D. in Clinical Health Psychology at UMKC in 1998 and 2005, respectively. He has conducted psychological treatment in a range of mental health and medical settings throughout the Kansas City area, including the KU Medical Center, the UMKC School of Dentistry, the UMKC Block Cancer Support Center, Turningpoint: A Center for Hope and Healing, and Truman Medical Center (TMC). An area of specialization for Dr. Nelson has been the clinical application of mind-body techniques; including progressive muscle relaxation, autogenic training, and biofeedback. The application of these techniques has facilitated efforts to integrate psychological treatment with medical care at Truman Medical Center (TMC), and a range of specialty medical clinics at TMC have benefited from his integration efforts, including Pulmonary, Sleep, Infectious Disease, Oncology, and Sickle Cell.
Dr. Nelson currently functions as a Behavioral Health Consultant in several TMC primary care clinics as part of the Missouri Medicaid Health Home Initiative, and he is actively engaged in efforts to integrate psychological assessment and treatment throughout Truman Medical Center as the organization seeks national accreditation as a Patient-Centered Medical Home. During this presentation Dr. Nelson will discuss the history and concepts related to two relaxation techniques (e.g. progressive muscle relaxation, autogenic training), present a rationale for the inclusion of thermal biofeedback to facilitate the development of selfregulation mastery, and provide an opportunity for attendees to experientially participate in a structured relaxation activity. The attendee will be able to discuss the history and concepts related to progressive muscle relaxation; The attendee will be able to discuss the history and concepts related to autogenic training; The attendee will be able to discuss the rationale for including thermal biofeedback in clinical applications of relaxation training; and, The attendee will experientially participate in a structured relaxation activity. Cary R. Savage, Ph.D. Cognitive Neuroscience of Obesity: Implications for Intervention (1.5 CE s) Dr. Savage received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Oklahoma State University. He completed an internship in clinical psychology and postdoctoral fellowships in neuropsychology and functional neuroimaging at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH)/Harvard Medical School. He remained on the faculty of MGH and served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and as the Director of Cognitive Neuroscience in the Department of Psychiatry at MGH. Dr. Savage moved to Kansas City in 2003 to serve as Director of Functional MRI in the Hoglund Brain Imaging Center and as a Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at KUMC. He was recently named Director of the new Center for Health Behavior Neuroscience at KUMC and the John H. Wineinger Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Savage has published over 100 research papers and review articles, and he is on the editorial boards of the Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry and Neurology, and Biology of Mood and Anxiety Disorders. Dr. Savage s research has been continuously funded since 1995, when he received a Scientist Development Award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). His work is currently supported by the NIH and private foundations. Dr. Savage s research uses functional neuroimaging techniques to identify how the brain contributes to strategic behaviors and decision making. Areas of specific focus include brain mechanisms of healthy and unhealthy eating, exercise adherence, and other health behaviors.
Obesity arises from chronic imbalances between energy intake and expenditure. Health-related decisions such as how much to eat and whether to exercise are influenced by a convergence of processes in the brain, as individuals weigh the positive impact of reward in comparison to anticipated long term consequences. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fmri) studies are identifying brain mechanisms underlying health behaviors. This presentation will summarize findings from fmri studies of food motivation in obese and healthy weight groups and present results from new research examining brain function predictors of weight loss and exercise adherence. Understand the growing problem of obesity in the U.S. and other developed countries.; Understand the brain basis of health behaviors such as eating; and, Learn about new research aimed at identifying brain function predictors of successful and unsuccessful obesity interventions. Continuing Education Units: At the conclusion of each speaker presentation, registered guests may complete a Program Evaluation Form and submit this to designated GKCPA volunteers to receive a Certificate of Attendance and Continuing Education Units. Registered guests are eligible to receive seven (7) CE units for attending this full day conference and may be earned as follows: Conference Keynote... 3 CE Units Kansas & Missouri Regulatory Updates... 1 CE Unit Afternoon Workshop # CE Units Afternoon Workshop # CE Units Johnson County Community College: Regnier Center (RC) 101 A/B College & Quivira Overland Park, KS
