1 With less than 1 month to go until the calendar turns to 2016, the clinic training services team with Lakeland Centre for FASD are preparing for another year. New Year goals include advanced training, development of new resources that highlight the revised Canadian diagnostic guidelines, and continued support for emerging clinics and new clinic coordinators was definitely a year of change, in so many respects: new governments, reality of new oil prices and conflicts and tragedies across the globe that impact us all. Change is inevitable, and hopefully, some of the changes you ve experienced over the past year have been positive. It could be as simple as a different attitude towards something or varying your way of doing a particular task. Over the past 2 years, pending the publication of the revised Canadian diagnostic guidelines, FASD clinics in Alberta have been preparing for change in the criterion and nomenclature when assessing and diagnosing children and adults. FASD clinic and network coordinators have been instrumental in supporting and assisting with numerous training sessions held across the province during They were our feet on the ground in getting the word out to so many clinicians and stakeholders who attended the sessions in their regions. Lethbridge Family Services and Grande Prairie clinics hosted open community events the day before the core diagnostic clinic training, attracting over 200 and 70 people each to their respective sessions. Our annual clinic training event, held at University of Alberta in April 2015, was full to capacity, with over 70 individuals attending. Stay tuned for news of how we will change up our training topics for Each year, clinics inform us of their training needs; we listen to your feedback and strive to deliver resources and events that are relevant. Thanks to those who provided useful information on the most recent Survey Monkey that was sent to clinic coordinators and vetted to their clinic members. If you would still like to send training topics or other suggestions, please clinictraining@lcfasd.com INSIDE THIS ISSUE Clinic Highlight Northwest Central Post Adoption Information Forms Links & Information Professionals without Parachutes Clinic Contact Information Dec 2015 Vol. 18
2 North West Central FASD Network ~Edson, Hinton, Jasper Regions~ Submitted by: Sharon Pearcey The North West Central FASD Network provides FASD Assessment and Diagnostic services to adult and pediatric clients in the surrounding areas of Edson, Hinton and Jasper. Pediatric clinics are mobile- based, with clinics typically being held in Edson. However, in the past, clinics have been held in Jasper, Hinton as well as Edson. The option continues to be open to having clinics in both Jasper and Hinton locales. Speech and language testing is available within the immediate vicinity, minimizing travel costs for our pediatric clients. Psychological testing is also accommodated by having the testing occur in the child s school. Consultation with the school provides the opportunity for testing to not interfere with student participation in previously scheduled school- based activities. Adult clinics are not mobile- based. Every effort is made to have the client seen by Monty Nelson, Ph.D., Registered Psychologist, at his Edmonton office, for the psychology and occupational therapy assessments on the same day. Unfortunately, scheduling difficulties sometimes prevent both assessments from being completed on the same day, which results in extra travel for the client. Adult clinic is also held at Dr. Nelson s office in Edmonton. Core members of our team are: Pediatric Clinic Team Dr. Hasmukhlal (Hasu) Rajani (Pediatrician), Brent Symes, Ph.D. (Registered Psychologist), Julie Griffiths (Registered Speech Language Pathologist), Sharon Pearcey (Coordinator) Adult Clinic Team Dr. Uys Winterbach (Physician), Brent Symes, Sharon Brintnell (Occupational Therapist), Sharon Pearcey (Coordinator) Important Change Post Adoption Registry Requests for Information All FASD clinic requests for information from the Post Adoption Registry, Edmonton, will now use a revised request for information form. We have included the complete form in this LINKS, pp 3-4. A fillable PDF version will be sent to each Clinic Coordinator directly by over the next week.

5 ~ Clinic Coordinators ~ Annual FASD Clinic Coordinator Meeting On September 25, 2015, FASD Clinic Coordinators met at the St. John s Institute in Edmonton for the annual meeting. As with other years, there was great representation of coordinators and clinic managers from all areas of Alberta. Excellent discussion topics were provided by: Dr. Monty Nelson~ Registered Psychologist; Wesley Carter~ Post Adoption Services; Sharon Enslen & Janice Penner~ CMC and a panel of 3 clinic coordinators who talked about challenges in obtaining PAE for adult clients. Thanks to all participants who took time from their schedules to attend! Upcoming Training Opportunity There have been requests for a one-day, targeted training session for new clinic coordinators, and those who have been in the coordinator position for less than 1 year. Implementing the new guidelines; gathering and documenting required health, background and other information; obtaining reliable prenatal alcohol exposure history; and use of forms and final medical summary reports will be covered. The training is planned for early spring, 2016, most likely in Edmonton. No cost to clinic coordinators attending. If you have questions or interest in this training, please clinictraining@lcfasd.com
