1 Introduction Brain-Based Recovery HOW THE REMODELING OF NEURAL NETWORKS CAN HELP YOU ACHIEVE AND SUSTAIN RECOVERY About Me About You About this Presentation Big Picture Overview Little Bit Experiential How does learning about the Brain help people struggling with Addiction? Addiction ASAM Definition Addiction Dr. Gabor Mate Quote American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Short Definition Addiction is a primary, chronic disease of brain reward, motivation, memory and related circuitry. Dysfunction in these circuits leads to characteristic biological, psychological, social and spiritual manifestations. This is reflected in an individual pathologically pursuing reward and/or relief by substance use and other behaviors. Not all addictions are rooted in abuse or trauma, but I do believe they can all be traced to painful experience. A hurt is at the center of all addictive behaviors. It is present in the in the gambler, the internet addict, the compulsive shopper and the workaholic. The wound may not be as deep and the ache not as excruciating, and it may even be entirely hidden but it s there The effects of early stress or adverse experiences directly shape both the psychology and the neurobiology of addiction in the brain. You Can Remodel Your Brain!! NEUROPLASTICITY (REMODELING) NEURONS (MATERIALS) NEUROTRANSMITTERS (FASTENERS) NEURAL NETWORKS (WALLS) Brain Remodeling Neurons a nerve cell that carries information between the brain and other parts of the body. Building Materials Neurotransmitters chemical messengers between neurons. Fasteners or Connectors Neural Networks a series of interconnected neurons whose activation defines a recognizable pattern. How to support that possibility in ourselves and others is the ultimate question. - Gabor Mate A BLUEPRINT FOR BRAIN REMODELING. INTEGRATION Intentionally Facilitating Brain Integration. GROWTH Earned, Authentic and Sustainable Personal Growth impacting Physical, Emotional, Relational and Spiritual Health. Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom. -Victor E. In our 60 minutes together, are you able to say that you know more about your brain? Have Brain Plans? How to Rewire Neural Networks? How to Notice Internal Shifts in the Body?
