3 About the Course We are delighted to present the first University of Sydney and The University of Washington Joint Short Course in HIV and STIs. Course faculty are internationally and nationally recognized leaders in their respective fields. Our course will deliver a unique blend of U.S. and Australian education through expert lectures, sharing of experience and group discussion. In preparing the course content, we have been mindful of the multi-disciplinary approaches required to achieve effective management and control STIs, including HIV. We have therefore designed a course which can be attended in its entirety over three days or on a one-day only basis, dependent upon personal interest and relevance. Each day will therefore have a different theme and flavour. 8 Convening Institutions Western Sydney Sexual Health, the University of Sydney Western Sydney Sexual Health at the University of Sydney is a global leader in education in the field of Sexual Health, offering postgraduate education in clinical, diagnostic, public health and counselling aspects of HIV, STIs and Sexual Health. The post-graduate program in HIV, STIs and Sexual Health has been running for over 20 years, and we are proud to have alumni from over 50 different countries World-wide. Additionally, through the Australian government funded Australia Awards program, Western Sydney Sexual Health has been an active provider of intensive short-courses to professionals working in countries facing significant Public Health challenges due to HIV and STIs. Specifically, the intensive programs delivered by Western Sydney Sexual Health have focussed on the Asia-Pacific and Sub-Saharan African regions. The University of Washington The University of Washington (UW) Center for AIDS and STD (CFAS), established in July 1989, provides patient care, research, training and education, and international technical assistance for HIV/AIDS and STD. The CFAS is administered by the UW in collaboration with several other institutions throughout the Pacific Northwest and in several other countries. The UW CFAS was designated a "World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Center for AIDS and STD" in 1995, the only such collaborating center in the Western Hemisphere. Approximately 120 UW and affiliated faculty participate in CFAS programs. They include HIV/AIDS and STD specialists in internal medicine, obstetrics, gynecology, pediatrics, family medicine, dentistry, nursing, social work, public health, pharmacy, microbiology, and pathology. The UW CFAS is funded by several federal and state agencies to coordinate all UW AIDS and STD related programs. Western Sydney Sexual Health 6

9 Faculty Biographies Dominic Dwyer Dominic Dwyer is a medical virologist and infectious diseases physician based at Westmead Hospital and a Clinical Professor at the University of Sydney. He is Director of Pathology West, one of the public pathology networks in NSW Health Pathology. He trained at St Vincent s and Westmead Hospitals in Sydney, and undertook postgraduate research in HIV/AIDS at the Institute Pasteur in Paris, France. He has a clinical and research interest in viral diseases of public health importance and runs an antiviral and vaccine clinical trials unit. Carey Farquhar Carey Farquhar is a Clinical Professor at the University of Washington in the Departments of Global Health, Medicine, and Epidemiology. Dr. Farquhar is also the Associate Chair for Academic Programs in the Department of Global Health at UW, the Director of the UW Kenya Research and Training Center, and the UW Internal Medicine Global Health Pathway. She mentors USA and Kenyan trainees and conducts research on HIVdiscordant couples, HIV partner services, correlates of immunity against HIV-1, and mother-to-child HIV-1 transmission. Susan M. Graham Susan Graham is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Global Health and an Adjunct Associate Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Washington. Dr. Graham's major research interests include HIV treatment and prevention in marginalized populations, and HIV pathogenesis and disease progression. Her HIV research focuses on female sex workers and men-who-havesex-with-men in Kenya. Dr. Graham co-directs the UW School of Medicine's Global Health Pathway the annual "Principles of STD/HIV Research" course in Seattle. King Holmes King Holmes founded the Department of Global Health at the University of Washington (UW), and served as its William H. Foege Chair of Global Health from He has served as Vice-Chair of the UW Department of Medicine, was Principal Investigator (PI) for the UW/Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center for AIDS Research for 28 years, and is PI for the UW International Training and Education Center for Health (I-TECH), He is the 2013 recipient of both the Canada Gairdner Foundation Global Health Award and the Infectious Diseases Society of America Lifetime Achievement Award. 10 Melissa Kang Melissa Kang works at the Australian Research Centre in Public and Population Health at the University of Technology Sydney and is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of General Practice, Sydney Medical School-Westmead at the University of Sydney. Melissa is a primary care clinician in Youth Health Services in western Sydney, working with homeless young people. Her research interests include adolescent sexuality and sexual health, as well as access to health care for young people. David Lewis David Lewis has worked in the field of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in a variety of clinical, microbiological and public health roles for 25 years. He is currently Director and Research Lead at Western Sydney Sexual Health Centre as well as Conjoint Professor at the Marie Bashir Institute for Infectious Diseases and Biosecurity and Sydney Medical School- Westmead at the University of Sydney. Professor Lewis STI/HIV research interests focus on antimicrobial resistance, genital ulceration and point-of-care diagnostics. Sheila Lukehart Sheila Lukehart is Professor of Medicine and Global Health, and Adjunct Professor of Microbiology, at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA. She is an internationally-recognized expert on syphilis and Treponema pallidum, and has focused her research on molecular pathogenesis of syphilis, host immune responses to Treponema pallidum, neurosyphilis, syphilis-hiv interactions, and antibiotic resistance in T. pallidum. Phillip Read Phillip Read is a Sexual Health Physician, and the medical unit manager of at the Kirketon Road Centre (KRC). He holds a conjoint Senior Lecturer position at the Kirby Institute, UNSW Australia. KRC, recognised as a best practice model for its work with marginalised populations, has been involved in the prevention, treatment and care of HIV, viral hepatitis and STIs in people who inject drugs, sex workers and at-risk young people. KRC works in partnership with Medically Supervised Injecting Centre and the NSW Users and AIDS Association. Western Sydney Sexual Health 8

11 Shailendra Sawleshwarkar Shailendra Sawleshwarkar is a Senior Lecturer and Clinical Academic at Western Sydney Sexual Health Centre, Sydney Medical School-Westmead. He is also the Leader of Education at the Marie Bashir Institute for Infectious Diseases and Biosecurity at the University of Sydney. His research interests include the management of HIV and STIs in primary care, studies of HIV non- B subtypes, and of STIs and HIV in culturally and linguistically diverse populations. He has helped develop the Australian Molecular Epidemiology Network-HIV (AMEN-HIV). David Templeton Dave Templeton is Senior Staff Specialist and Clinical Services Manager at RPA Sexual Health and an Associate Professor within the University of Sydney. He completed his PhD in 2008 on STI & HIV epidemiology among gay men. Dave s current research focus is the Study to Prevent Anal Cancer (SPANC) investigating the natural history of anal human papillomavirus infection and precancerous anal lesions in gay men with the over-arching aim of informing an anal cancer screening program in this population. He has also published on HPV-related cervical disease among HIV-positive Australian women. Judith Wasserheit Judith Wasserheit has worked extensively at the interface of STI and HIV clinical-epidemiological research, programs and policy in the U.S. and globally. Currently Professor and Chair of the Department of Global Health at the University of Washington, Judith has previously serves as Chief of the U.S. NIH s STD Research Branch, Director of the U.S. CDC s STD Prevention Program, and Director of the HIV Vaccine Trials Network. She has worked in Bangladesh, Colombia, Egypt, Indonesia, Kenya, Thailand and Zambia. Rachel Winer Rachel Winer is an Associate Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Washington School of Public Health. She has codirected the UW Principles of STD/HIV Research Course since Her research focused on the epidemiology and prevention of human papillomavirus (HPV) infections and HPV-related cancers. Current projects focus on the epidemiology and natural history of ano-genital and oral HPV infections, HPV vaccine impact in young men-who-have-sex-with-men and the effectiveness of cervical cancer screening in underserved populations.
