2 Saturday Program 8:30am 9:15am 9:30am Registration and Coffee Welcome and Introduction to Keynote speaker: President of APAS Keynote lecture: Dr Virgina Ungar Adolescence: the pain of belonging or not belonging Our clinical practice with adolescents faces us with the impact of vertiginous changes in social institutions of technological advance. The paper will address the importance of image, virtual reality and sexuality in the adolescent period. Clinical material will be offered to illustrate the situation of youth who seek help because they suffer from a lack of the necessary psychic resources to enter the adolescent world. Chair: Mrs Maria Teresa Hooke 11-11:30 Morning Tea 11:30am Lecture: Associate Professor Frances Thomson-Salo The Psychoanalyst in the community: the power of having no power When an analyst working outside the consulting room is experienced by the community as a containing and helpful presence there is a potential to reach a broader population. The paper s clinical focus is on working with new parents, particularly with patients who are hard - to - reach: adolescent parents with premature infants, substance using, or have borderline experiences. The analyst is therefore working in a place where they are also needed - in the outside world. Chair: Dr Barry Jones 1-2pm Lunch 2:00pm Lecture: Dr Virginia Ungar Interpretation in Child Analysis today The paper focuses on interpretation and formulation in the current practice in child psychoanalysis. Emphasis is also placed on the countertransference, which is affected by the relationship with the patient s parents. This has an effect on the construction of interpretations. Our term, psychic orphans describes patients that eschew representations of the paternal and maternal functions and use psychoanalysis as incubator to hold their timeless existence. We ask: What does this mean for the talking cure? Louise Gyler discusses the analytic attitude and the challenge of keeping on going. Julie Meadows enquires are these psychoanalyses a substitute for living? Kaye Nelson explores the question of psychic limits within the analysand and analyst. Chair: Ms Milena Mirabelli 11-11:30 Morning Tea 11:30am Presentation: Ms Roslyn Glickfeld, Dr Timothy Keogh, Dr Ken Israelstam*. The psychoanalyst at work with the couple A 90-minute workshop that will introduce some of the main theoretical tenets of working with couples including the importance of keeping the couple in mind and the notion of interlocking inter-subjectivity in the couple dyad. Clinical vignettes will be used for discussion, which will be aimed at identifying the core aspects of couples psychoanalysis. The emphasis will be on the internal mental work required of the analyst as well as her use of countertransference. Chair: Ms Milena Mirabelli Balint Workshops provide an experience of a Balint group which explores the interaction between clinician and patient. 9-11am - Seminar Leader: Dr Bill Betts 11-1pm - Seminar Leaders: Dr Tom Wilmot & Mrs Leonie Sullivan*. 4 A/Prof Frances Thomson-Salo Dr Virginia Ungar About the Speakers Virginia Ungar, M.D. is a member and training analyst of the Buenos Aires Psychoanalytical Association. She is a specialist in Child and Adolescent Psychoanalysis, former Chair of the Committee of Child and Adolescent Psychoanalysis of the IPA (COCAP). She was also Chair of the IPA Integrated Training Committee. She is a member of the Editorial Board of the IJP. She has published numerous papers in Journals and chapters in books. She is President Elect of the International Psychoanalytical Association since June, A/Prof Frances Thomson-Salo trained as a child and adult analyst with the British Psychoanalytical Society and is a training analyst and past President of the Australian Psychoanalytical Society. For 6 years she was the Chair of the International Psychoanalytical Association Committee on Women and Psychoanalysis. Her books include Infant Observation, and The female body co-edited with I Moeslein-Teising, and is on the Editorial Board of the IJP. She works at the Royal Women s and Children s Hospitals and teaches in the University of Melbourne Master of Infant Mental Health program.
