1 Newsletter September 2016 The journey of a mother with a child with special needs Helping children with special health care needs. Since 1948 Contents A mother s experience 1 Workshops & Seminars 2 Parenting Classes 3 Academy for ADHD 4 Academy for Autism 5 Community Events 6 CDIC Trainings 7 Parent s Night Out 8 Support Groups 8 This is my story. My name is Valeria, Emilio is my son. He is 9 years old and he has Autism. Emilio and I live alone, I am a single mom. My pregnancy was a great experience, no complications. Everything was perfect when he was born. I had a beautiful baby boy that was by all appearances healthy, and was very calm (too calm). So much so, he would not cry to eat. I would have to set an alarm when it was time for him to eat. Time passed and he was delayed in learning to crawl and walk. Emilio was diagnosed with Autism at 5 years of age. When you first receive the diagnosis, your world comes crashing down, you are mad at the world and with God, doors are shut and you feel alone. I told myself it was time to make a decision, deny there is a problem or face it. I couldn t deny it, I knew from the time he was a baby there was something wrong, it was a mother s intuition. I asked myself, now what do I do, where do I go? I didn t know where to get help. I met a mother who mentioned a place called Paso del Norte Children s Development Center. When I arrived at the center, I realized I was at the right place. I was treated nicely by both the personnel and the parents present at the center. I felt comfortable with opening up to them about my life. Paso del Norte Children s Development Center has the Autism Academies, the parent support groups, trainings, therapies, support for the ARD meetings, and the guidance needed to know the different programs available to help our children in the future. Emilio is enrolled in several of these programs offered at the center. I believe that one of our main concerns as mothers is what is going to happen to my child when I am no longer here. Well, I feel more at ease now because I know he is going to be fine. Emilio is an angel that came to my life to show me to value the important things in life. I feel a peace within me which allows me to have more quality time with my son.
