1 NEWSLETTER 2018 Special Communities Greetings from your Manhattan Parks and Recreation Staff! As you will soon notice we have re-branded our Therapeutic Recreation guide and have added programs to reach a wider population. The Therapeutic Recreation Activity Guide will now be the Special Communities Activity Guide. Our Therapeutic Recreation for adults is now titled Special Populations and we are now offering Kid s Therapeutic Recreation opportunities. We want to ensure that when you are completing your registration form, that you pay close attention to which activity you are registering for. One side is labeled Special Populations and are the activities and programs for our adult population, the other side is labeled Kid s Therapeutic Recreation and is tailored to our kid s population. We also want to ensure that you are paying close attention to the date and time changes that are highlighted throughout the guide. We are also excited to announce that we will be offering weekly enrollment for our Adult Special Populations. We are hopeful that this will increase the number of participants due to the lower cost and flexibility to fit your schedule. Please note, that on the registration form it is indicated that there will be no class on city recognized holidays. Also beginning in 2019 we will no longer be accepting phone registrations. A signed registration form will be required to participate in our Special Communities programming. Mail or in-office registrations will be accepted if they are signed, registrations will be on a first-come first-paid basis. A signature from yourself or a guardian on the registration form will verify all information provided is completed and accurate as well as release liability from the City of Manhattan and the Manhattan Parks and Recreation Department. We apologize for any inconveniences this may cause. We are excited to be expanding into this new demographic and have high hopes that this will open many doors for our community. We are looking forward to developing more programs for both adults and youth as the demand arises. Thank you for being a part of our Special Community and we can t wait to see what 2019 will bring! 3 SPECIAL POPULATIONS ADULTS We offer an extensive program for our special populations who choose not to participate in the integrated recreation program. The registration form for all Special Communities programming is available at MHKPRD.com or at the Parks and Recreation office. Questions? Contact or Register online with activity #: COOKING TIME & LOCATION CHANGE Cooking classes are hands-on and teach skills in basic preparation of healthy, budget friendly recipes. Each month recipes will follow a theme! Weekly enrollment available. $7.50/class 3:45-4:45pm Date: Mon, 1/28-5/13 Hy-Vee GARDENING Let s grow some food, then learn how to use it! We start our garden crops in late February for the 2019 season. We hope to spend as much time outside as we can! $1/class Wed, 4:30-5:30pm Sat, 1:00-2:00pm Date: Wed or Sat, 1/23-5/15 Community Gardens ARTS & CRAFTS LOCATION CHANGE Each week we continue to offer 2-3 craft choices, a coloring table, and a specialty arts table. Specialty arts include yarn art, ceramics/pottery, water color painting, and fabric art (sewing). $7.50/class 4:30-5:30pm Date: Thurs, 1/24-5/ Freemont St BOWLING BLAST Join in the bowling fun with family and friends every Tuesday! $80/semester 4:00-5:00pm Date: Tues, 1/22-5/14 KSU Student Union Bowling Alley FRIDAY FUN NIGHT FREE This Friday Fun Night will be integrated with the Kids Therapeutic Rec program to provide an opportunity to have fun and socialize! We will offer gym sports, puzzles, Uno, karaoke, and so much more! FREE for adults and youth! 4:30-5:30pm Date: Fri, Jan - May Peace Memorial City Auditorium SPECIAL EVENTS WOMEN S BASKETBALL GAME We re trying a weeknight game this year!! Come cheer on our Lady Cats as they take on Baylor! Concessions provided. $10 7:00-9:00pm Date: Wed, 2/13 Bramalage Coliseum Limits: Max. 60 [ 4 ] ST. PATTY S DAY DANCE It s our annual St. Patty s Dance, so put on your most green outfit and come enjoy a night of fun food, friends, and dancing! 7:00-9:00pm Date: Sat, 3/16 Peace Memorial City Auditorium Limits: Max. 100 KSU BASEBALL GAME One strike, two strikes, three strikes, you re out! 4 THERAPEUTIC RECREATION YOUTH We are extending our programs for developmentally and intellectually disabled children ages 5-18, who choose not to participate in the integrated recreation programs. These programs will provide the opportunity for the children to learn from experienced instructors, socialize with peers, all while trying new things in an appropriate and safe setting. Register online with activity #: BOWLING BLAST Register to be a part of the bowling blast with your friends in Therapeutic Rec, each Tuesday for an 1 hour of bowling! Price includes the cost to bowl, shoes and supervision for 16 weeks at Little Apple Lanes! $80/semester 4:30-5:30pm Date: Tues, 1/22-5/14 Little Apple Lanes ARTS & CRAFTS This arts and crafts class will provide a chance for the kids to be creative and socialize with our staff and other children. Each week the participants will be able to create and take home the crafts that they make. $17.50 or $35/month 5:30-6:30pm Date: Thurs, 1/24-5/ Freemont St FRIDAY FUN NIGHT FREE This Friday Fun Night will be integrated with the other Special Populations program to provide an opportunity to have fun and socialize! We will offer gym sports, board games, Uno, puzzles, karaoke, and so much more! Date: FREE for adults and youth! 4:30-5:30pm Fri, Jan - May Peace Memorial City Auditorium CHALLENGER FOOTBALL FREE Challenger Football is a free flag football program for kids age 5-18 with special needs starting this spring. Receipt of payment will reserve a place in the class. Checks will be returned if activity is full. Registration will be accepted upon receipt of this guide. Registrants will receive a full refund if MPRD cancels the program, or may be able to transfer participant to another class. A full refund is granted if request to withdraw is received 1 week (7 days) prior to start date. A partial refund is granted when requested between 1 week and at least 48 hours prior to start date. No refunds will be granted if the request is less than 48 hours in advance or if the participant fails to show. Participant withdrawals must be received during regular business hours M-F 8am 5pm. Release of Liability. In consideration of my participation in the Recreation Activity, I agree to waive, release, discharge, and covenant not to sue, make a claim against, or prosecute, the City of Manhattan, including its respective officials, agents and employees, all of which are hereinafter referred to as released parties, from and against any and all losses, expenses, damages, injuries and liabilities and claims (including attorneys fees, court costs and settlement costs) arising out of or relating to my participation in the Recreation Activity and/or arising out of the risks assumed above. Media Release. I grant the City of Manhattan permission to photograph, film or record me during or at the Recreation Activity, and I agree that the City may now and in the future use the photographs, videos or recordings for standard City purposes including but not limited to promotion, education, publicity, development, fundraising and training, in all media, online and social media formats. I agree that no compensation shall be paid for such use, and I release the released parties from any claims, liability or damage that may arise from such use.
