2 About Howard Center Howard Center has a long and rich history as a trusted provider in our community. With a legacy spanning 150 years, Howard Center has been leading the charge for progressive, compassionate, high quality care and treatment for those members of our community in need. Founded in 1865 as an agency serving the children of the destitute, it now offers life-saving professional crisis and counseling services to children and adults; therapeutic interventions and education programs for children with emotional and behavioral issues; supportive services to individuals with autism and intellectual disabilities who need help with education, employment, and life maintenance skills; and counseling and medical services for adults struggling with substance use and mental health issues. Our staff of 1,500 provides help and support in over 60 locations. More than 16,000 clients and community members turned to us last year for services that help them become healthier and more fulfilled. 5 September 2015 TRAINING NAME: ETHICS AND MENTAL HEALTH LAW IN THE TREATMENT OF INDIVIDUALS WITH CO-OCCURRING DISORDERS Speakers: Cath Burns, Ph.D. and Sheryl Bellman, MA, MS, LCMHC, LADC Date/Time: 9/11/15 from 9 am - 4:30 pm (check in at 8:30) CEUs offered: 6 Ethics CEUs or 6 Substance Abuse CEUs Description: Treatment provision for clients with co-occurring needs has become increasingly complex in the 21st century. Participants in this workshop will review the main tenets of The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act as well as 42 CFR Part 2 that comprise the cornerstones of practice for health, mental health and substance abuse programs through the use of case study and discussion. A model of ethical decision making will also be reviewed and applied to case studies. Ethical issues pertaining to the provision of emergency mental health care and crisis services will be reviewed with the goal of expanding participants understanding of current laws and practice. Finally, basic issues of boundaries, dual relationships and other challenges that can result in compromised care and professional discipline will be explored (e.g., sexual relationships, negligence, fraudulent acts, and compromised capacity or competence to provide treatment). Participants should expect a combination of lecture and group activity through-out this day-long workshop. Contact Person: Jessica Lake Employee only or Public: Public/Employee October 2015 TRAINING NAME: TRAUMA THERAPY FOR CO-OCCURRING DISORDERS Speakers: Kerry Stout, LICSW, LADC and Joe Lasek, MD Date/Time: 10/30/15 from 9:00 am - 3:30 pm (check in at 8:30) Description: The purpose of this workshop is to provide clinicians with a de- mystified, strength and evidenced based, holistic approach to working with trauma and co-occurring disorders. We plan to teach clinicians effective skills, interventions, self-care and confidence in working with clients who struggle and live with the impact of trauma in their lives, and to deepen their understanding of counter-transferential issues and self-management skills. Topics that will be discussed include: identifying, defining and diagnosing PTSD and the impact of traumatic stress; understanding of brain functioning as it relates to traumatic stress; biochemical, psychological, social and spiritual perspectives of traumatic stress; and how to help your clients use and apply current cognitive, behavioral, body based and mindful interventions to stabilize and alleviate the negative consequences of PTSD. 5

Standard of care has moved to co- occurring treatment of mental health and substance abuse problems, and knowledge of how to best help and treat clients with substance use issues is beneficial to all clinicians. This seminar will provide a basic knowledge of addiction issues as well as established and evidence-based models of treatment. Participants will gain knowledge in: diagnosing clients using DSM-V, effects of substances on the body, medication-assisted treatments, assessing signs of intoxication, determining and working with a client s stage of change, determining most appropriate level of care using ASam criteria, and psychotherapeutic techniques to use in session. In this workshop, we will combine the perspective of a psychotherapeutic and medical perspective in the approach to anxiety disorders. We will cover the epidemiology and assessment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Panic Disorder, and Social Phobia. We will review effective psychosocial treatments and pharmacological treatments in the context of co-occurring substance use problems. We will wrap-up with a focus on commonalities in psychosocial 6
7 treatments for anxiety disorders along with a discussion of the special issues surrounding benzodiazepine use in treatment of anxiety disorders. This training is intended to provide participants with the necessary tools to evaluate insomnia, understand underlining causes, provide cognitive behavioral interventions and understand the pros and cons of utilization of medication in treating sleep problems as well as diagnosis and treatment of sleep problems in context of co-occurring disorders. Effective assessment is critical to treatment formulation and subsequent treatment planning. In the following workshop, participants will review the common approaches to assessment and how these efforts inform the identification of strengths and needs of clients and inform our diagnostic decisions. Using this information, models of treatment formulation and planning will be reviewed with application to case studies. Finally, exercises to inform how best to write specific treatment goals and their monitoring over the course of treatment will be presented. 7

9 June 2016 TRAINING NAME: NEW DIRECTIONS IN THE TREATMENT OF PSYCHOSIS Speakers: Sandy Steingard MD and Daniel Baslock, LICSW, AAP Date/Time: 6/10/16 from 9:00 am - 3:30 pm (check in at 8:30) Description: The treatment of psychosis in the US has been based largely on a medical and psychoeducational model of care. In recent years, there has been a resurgence of other approaches which emphasize the relational aspects of care. This course will briefly review the standard approach to treatment. We will then discuss alternative approaches including Needs- Adapted treatments (including Open Dialogue), Hearing Voices Movement, the Recovery Movement, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for psychosis. 10 Presenter Bios DANIEL BASLOCK, LICSW, AAP is a licensed clinical social worker in Vermont and currently practices at Pine Street Counseling Services through the Howard Center. He has a particular passion for anxiety disorder and psychotic disorder treatment. While a student at New York University, Daniel was accepted into in a joint program between the New York schools of Social Work and the New York State Office of Mental Health. Through this program he developed a specialization in the implementation and direct practice of evidence-based psychosocial treatments for severe mental health problems. SHERYL BELLMAN, MA, MS, LCMHC, LADC has worked in the mental health field for over 40 years, starting at Manhattan State Hospital in New York City and then at two Community Mental Health Agencies in Vermont. Sheryl was at Howard Center for 37 years and brings with her a wealth of experience. She was the Director of Crisis Services between 1992 and 2014, and has worked to create an array of services that are effective yet respectful, compassionate and responsive to individuals when they are most vulnerable. She strives to be a strong advocate and is passionate about changing the system in which we serve mental health patients. CATHERINE BURNS, PH.D. LICENSED PSYCHOLOGIST DOCTORATE, LICENSED SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST is a consultant on Evaluation and Outcomes at Howard Center. Prior to her consulting work, Cath held several positions at WCMHS as the Director of Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement, the Clinical Director for Children, Youth and Families, the Director of the Central Vermont Collaborative for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, and as a Behavioral Consultant for the A.C.E.S. program serving youth with emotional and behavioral disorders. Cath has provided training around the State for practitioners in community mental health and education, as well as has been an instructor at Johnson State College, the University of Vermont and in the Program in Community Mental Health for graduates and undergraduates studying development, ethics, and research methods and statistics. She earned a Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology and a Master s degree in Psychology from the University of Vermont, and a Master s degree in Educational Psychology from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Cath also has a background in research and applied practice in early childhood policy, prevention and promotion work, and with supporting children, youth and families with mental health and developmental disabilities. JOE LASEK, MD has been a staff psychiatrist and Associate Medical Director for Mental Health & Substance Abuse Services at Howard Center since During that time, he has also been a Clinical Assistant Professor for the UVM College of Medicine where he has taught and supervised medical students and psychiatric residents. Since March 2008, he has served as adjunct faculty at Southern New Hampshire University where he teaches psychopharmacology to Masters level students in the clinical mental health counseling program. While his primary clinical practice is in the outpatient program of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services at Howard Center, he has had appointments at several hospitals including Vermont State Hospital and Fletcher Allen Health Care and has past clinical experience in correctional settings, as well. Dr. Lasek has broad professional interests, but in particular he is interested in complex diagnostic questions and applying a multi-modal, integrated approach toward wellness and recovery. This approach includes evidence-based medication, psychotherapies, exercise, nutrition, meditation/ mindfulness, self-help, education/ vocational assistance and other community supports. His professional interests include community psychiatry, psychiatric consultation to primary care providers, psychiatric and substance abuse co-occurring disorders, adult ADHD and sleep. KERRY STOUT, LICSW, LADC discovered her passion for working with survivors of trauma during her internship at a hospital based crime victim s treatment center during her graduate social work program in New York City, after working for many years with the homeless. She remained on staff as a therapist and coordinator of the sexual assault forensic examiner program in the emergency departments of the hospital, working not only with rape survivors, but survivors of every all types of crime from many countries who found themselves struggling with the impact it had in 10
11 their lives. She has continued to maintain this as her primary clinical focus after her move to Burlington while working as program coordinator at Pine St. Counseling Services, and bringing a trauma informed approach to those struggling with mental health and addiction problems. SANDRA STEINGARD, MD is the Chief Medical Officer at Howard Center where she has worked for the past 17 years. She is also Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Vermont College of Medicine. For over 20 years her clinical practice has primarily included patients with schizophrenia and other psychotic illnesses. She serves on the Board of the Foundation for Excellence in Mental health Care, NAMI-VT, and the Mad In America continuing Education fund. She currently writes a blog called Anatomy of a Psychiatrist on the website Checkers, and Cribbage groups. Anne s philosophy is to support each person individually to reach their goals by helping them to develop strategies to be successful. She is involved in community building and seeks to provide education about barriers individuals on the Spectrum often face. In this arena, Anne teaches how to build bridges to a safe and inclusive environment so that all its members can succeed. JULIE SMITH, MA, BCBA is the Director of the Autism Spectrum Program at Howard Center and oversees the implementation of school, home and community-based behavior intervention services for children with autism and their families. She also provides training and coaching services to school and community professionals. Smith has been with the Autism Spectrum Program for 14 years and has an additional five years of experience supporting children with emotional and behavioral challenges. JENNIFER SPAGNUOLO, MS-LCMHC, LADC is the Clinical Director for Medicated Assisted Treatment Programs at Howard Center. Jennifer has been a therapist in Vermont for nine years. She has worked in Crisis, private practice and community mental health providing various outpatient services to people of all ages. Jennifer recently completed a two-year study on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and substance abuse through Dartmouth Psychiatric Research Center where she was a site coordinator as well as a clinician. At Howard Center, ANNE VERNON, MA is currently a Senior Manager with Howard Center where she administers a staff team that supports 130 adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders, intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities and co-occurring mental illness. Additionally, Anne leads several groups that she developed for individuals on the Spectrum, to include a Women s Group, a Video and Gaming Group, and Chess, 11
