Program of Mental Health Research, QIMR Berghofer
Michael Breakspear Coordinator, Program of Mental Health, QIMR Berghofer Psychiatrist, Brisbane Women s Correctional Centre Chair, Metro North Research Collaborative Committee Metro North Mental Health Research Review 214 Chair, Herston Imaging Centre Research Advisory Group and Scientific Committee
Program of Mental Health and Complex Disorders Mental Illness Cardiovascular Disease 5 Schizophrenia Personality disorders Alcohol dependence Anxiety & depression 1 Inflammatory heart disease Peripheral vascular disease Stroke Ischaemic heart disease Mental Illnesses are the leading cause of illness, loss of func3on, death and disability in adolescents and young adults in Australia. This impacts directly on society through health costs (especially rising costs of demen3a), loss of func3oning (especially depression), injury (drug and alcohol harm) and premature death (suicide and MVA leading causes of death for ages 18-35). Suicide is the leading cause of death in young adult males, and the third leading cause of YLL in males over all ages.
Youth Mental Health Research 5 Mental Illness Schizophrenia Personality disorders Alcohol dependence Anxiety & depression Cardiovascular Disease 1 5 Inflammatory heart disease Peripheral vascular disease Stroke Ischaemic heart disease In contrast to the major medical disorders, mental health impacts most greatly on young people The harm from risks occur up to 6 decades before those of medical diseases 1 5 Benzodiazepine dependence Hepatitis B Suicide & self-inflicted Cannabis dependence Hepatitis C Heroin dependence Illicit drugs 4 2 Stroke Ischaemic heart disease Cholesterol Benefits of Youth Mental Health Research 1. Prevent the risks and harm before they occur 2. A small adjustment of brain development can have major long term implica3ons 3. Would put QLD squarely on the map of mental health research and policy (currently dominated by Vic, ACT, NSW). 4. Would strengthen the reciprocal exchange between QLD Health, QIMR and the university sector
Program of Mental Health and Complex Disorders At QIMR we focus on these serious and prevalent disorders - depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, drug and alcohol use and demen3a Juvenile Rodent Drug exposure Preclinical imaging Adolescent Schoolies week Transla3onal imaging We are uniquely posi3oned to iterate between basic, preclinical and transla3onal research
Bipolar Kids and Sibs Study 7 At risk (young people with a first degree relative with BP) 4 Bipolar (young people with BP) 1 Controls (healthy young people) 5 Schizophrenia Personality disorders Alcohol dependence Anxiety & depression The goal of this project is to follow these young people (especially the high risk) through the peak period of conversion to bipolar disorder (i.e. the occurrence of a manic episode) Alistair Perry, Gloria Roberts, Anton Lord, Vinh Nguyen, Philip Mitchell
Bipolar Kids and Sibs Study Left sided network weaker in the high risk group, centre on hubs in IFG and AI Right sided network weaker in the high risk group, centred on hubs in IFG and AI 5 Schizophrenia Personality disorders Alcohol dependence Anxiety & depression Roberts/Perry, Mitchell, Breakspear (in review)
Depression and Demen=a research Unfortunately as mental health declines, the burden of demen3a arises Anxiety, depression Dementia Demen3a will soon become the leading cause of illness burden in Australian society. Current imaging and laboratory tests are insensi3ve to the early changes that precede demen3a
Prospective imaging study of ageing 5 Schizophrenia Personality disorders Alcohol dependence Anxiety & depression 4 Migraine Parkinson's disease Vision loss Adult-onset hearing loss Dementia ?
