2 STUDENT VOLUNTEERING GETTING INVOLVED TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE Miss UV To learn more about the campaign: missuv.ca 3 mm under the surface of the skin (epidermis) and helps show the damage caused by UV rays. If some people decide to wear more sunscreen and forget tanning beds, I think what I do makes a difference, she says. For this young woman with a promising future, being involved in her community is one of her priorities. Aline Khayat and Samuel Gagnon, volunteers Despite their active lives and hectic schedules, Aline and Samuel are two students committed to preventing skin cancer. As part of the Miss UV campaign funded by donors like you, they visit public places and educational institutions with a UV Photomaton (photo cabin) to create awareness of the harmful effects of the sun among the young and not so young. Aline: Getting involved for the sake of youth Calm, poised and bright-eyed, this doctoral student in molecular biology at Université de Montréal has been a part of the Miss UV campaign s intervention team for the past three years now. For Aline, prevention requires habit changes. The photomaton takes a UV photo Samuel: Preventing instead of curing Enthusiastic musician and extrovert, Samuel recently started nursing studies at Collège de Bois-de-Boulogne after a stint in human resources. Just 29, he s already been a part of several boards at the same time that he s been actively involved in the Miss UV campaign. Besides interpreting the photos, I like to answer questions from participants and debunk tanning myths. For instance, a lot of people don t know that you can get sunburned in the shade. What does he get from volunteering at the Canadian Cancer Society? The gratification of helping others and feeling useful by working for cancer prevention. Thank you to Aline and Samuel for saving more lives! FOLLOW ALINE AND SAMUEL S EXAMPLE Join the Canadian Cancer Society s 30,000 volunteers! benevolat@quebec.cancer.ca PUBLISHED BY Communications Marketing Department Canadian Cancer Society Quebec Division 5151 de l Assomption Blvd. Montreal (Quebec) H1T 4A9 Telephone: FOLLOW US ON MAKE A DONATION ON cancer.ca Une version française de ce bulletin est disponible en appelant le
3 PLANNED GIVING PASSING ON THE GIFT OF LIFE Leave the legacy of hope donsplanifies@quebec.cancer.ca For Camille Tremblay s uncle Onésime Bradette, leaving a part of his assets to the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) was an opportunity to save more lives through more prevention, research and support to people living with the disease. Three years ago, my uncle died of generalized cancer at the age of 78. He chose to bequeath the major part of his assets to the Canadian Cancer Society. I m very proud of his decision because good health is the most important thing in the world. Being a cancer survivor myself, I know how crucial research is. I might not be still alive if there hadn t been advances in treatment methods. This is why my uncle Onésime s donation is very touching and makes me proud even today. As the executor of his will, I worked very hard to make sure that his estate was properly distributed so that a good part of it would go to the CCS. I always told my uncle that I would back him all the way and that s what I did. It s my way of taking my hat off to him and remembering him. Camille Tremblay TURN TO ELECTRONIC FORMAT! 4 STÉPHANIE ALLARD ASSISTANCE THAT MATTERS In September 2013, I was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer. The shock of it! As a single mother of a 2-year-old girl, what would I do, who would I turn to? My life took a completely different turn when I called the Canadian Cancer Society. Its presence in 55 cities in Quebec gave me access to a vast array of services: I could obtain financial assistance and enjoy the loan of a wig to feel a little feminine again. Telephone pairing also helped me a lot. By talking to people who were going through the same experience, I suddenly felt less alone. I was understood, supported and reassured. The Canadian Cancer Society was like a guardian angel in my life and this was possible because of donors like you. Now, it s my turn to give back. That s why I ve registered as a team captain in the Relay For Life by giving my time to help others living with cancer. Your donation of: Stéphanie Allard, breast cancer survivor, and her daughter Faith 55 $25 enables a person living with cancer to obtain a high-quality wig. $150 enables three people living with cancer to participate in one of the support groups in the 55 cities in Quebec where the CCS s services are available.
5 DR MARK BASIK THE IMPORTANCE OF RESEARCH Your donation of: Dr Mark Basik The Canadian Cancer Society funded one of my research projects aimed at better understanding the relationship between the immune system and cancer cells in certain types of breast cancer that are resistant to chemotherapy. Although the survival rate of most breast cancers has seen a dramatic rise from 65% in the 1960s to 90% today, investing in research remains crucial. Thanks to your donations, I can continue my work to understand this resistance and I hope to be able to find better treatment methods soon for these types of breast cancer. Fortunately, research helps offer more effective drugs and treatments for other aggressive cancers such as melanoma and lung cancer. I d like to thank Canadian Cancer Society donors for believing in research and above all, for continuing to give hope to thousands of Quebecers living with the disease. $75 funds two hours of research to create a breath test that can detect lung cancer. $250 funds three hours of research to better understand the causes of leukemia.
6 SYLVAIN POISSANT SAVING MORE LIVES You ve only three weeks left to live. That s what I was told in I was young, athletic and full of life, but overnight, I had to start fighting against death from skin cancer, which I could have avoided by protecting myself more carefully against the sun. After a year of countless experimental treatments, I learned the importance of the word resilience. When I managed to buy three months, I wanted three more to be cured eventually. That s why I made the decision to transform my experience into something positive by becoming a Canadian Cancer Society ambassador. This role allows me to visit schools and raise awareness of the hazards of UV rays among teenagers. When I tell them my story, I have the impression that I m a good influence on them to motivate them to change their habits. I wanted to do more in the fight against skin cancer, so I started the Sylvain-Poissant Fund for prevention and research. I feel even more useful now and most importantly, I know that I can save more lives. Sylvain Poissant, skin cancer survivor Your donation of: $30 can help reach 10 women whose lives could be saved by getting a mammogram. $100 can help create awareness of the harmful effects of UV rays among 20 teenagers to prevent skin cancer.
