3 Dean's Message Namsik Chung Dean of Yonsei University College of Medicine It has already been two years since Yonsei University College of Medicine began the second phase of the Brain Korea 21 Project for Medical Science in 2006, based on the successful achievements of the first six-year phase of the project from 1999 to In the last two years, we have surpassed our initial goals thanks to participating faculty members, new research personnel, graduate students and other supportive staff members. I hereby would like to extend my gratitude and encouragement to all of those who have been constantly endeavoring to achieve even better results in 2008, including the Director of the Brain Korea 21 Project for Medical Science. The competitiveness of a medical school is evaluated by both its production of outstanding human resources and its research achievements. The professors participating in the school s BK 21 Project for Medical Science and the more than 220 students who are conducting basic research essential to the project are like points of light illuminating the future. With its goal to become an educational organization of leading medical technologies and innovations by creating new research areas and by being the most desired place to study for students, the BK 21 Project for Medical Science of Yonsei University College of Medicine will continue to provide students with the opportunity to grow and to make valuable contributions to the development of the field of medicine. It will also play a crucial role in enhancing the school s research potential. In order to realize the greatest synergy effect, from now on we will focus on research by emphasizing investment in joint research projects involving faculty and schools in global-level, industry-academic cooperation. We are also exerting our effort to secure more research space on campus and to expand on our already substantial assistance for students. Hoguen Kim Director, Brain Korea 21 Project for Medical Science, Yonsei University College of Medicine Director's Message On 03 behalf of the members of the Yonsei University Medical Center, I would like to introduce our Graduate School of Medical Science. The Graduate School of Medical Science has been supported by the Korean government as the Brain Korea 21 Project for Medical Science since Today, the Graduate School of Medical Science has more than 220 graduate students and 120 selected professors from Yonsei University Medical Center. Our educational goal is to extend the lives of patients and improve their quality of life. Life science is now a vast multidisciplinary field encompassing most areas of science and technology. There is an increasing trend toward conducting basic research that is influenced by clinical observations, and the rapidly developing fields of molecular biology and genetics directly influence clinical research. The synergies across the basic and clinical fields will deepen our knowledge. Reflecting the high quality of research and support from Yonsei University, our program has provided a variety of scholarships, including full scholarships, for a number of qualified students. We also offer many comprehensive scientific programs and state-of-the-art facilities for laboratory, transitional and clinical research. With advanced research technologies and generous academic and financial support, our graduate students have published numerous papers in top quality academic journals. Emphasizing the fact that research can grow through the support and encouragement of participating professors and researchers, graduate students and school staff members, in addition to substantial financial assistance, I would like to once again express my deep appreciation to all involved for their contributions to the successful execution of the project since its inception. We would like to invite students from all over the world to apply for our program. I know those who join us will find it beneficial to their development as graduate students and science researchers. Sincerely, August August

4 Vision To become a world-class leading research institute in the field of medical science. 04 About Us F unded by the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology, the Brain Korea 21 Project for Medical Science at Yonsei University College of Medicine supports the training of basic biomedical researchers with strong clinical backgrounds to improve the manner in which biomedical research is conducted in medical schools. Since 1999, the project has been promoting seven independent specialized training units with the common theme of Gene to Cure. It has been fulfilling the critical need to train the next generation of biomedical researchers in Korea. It strives to become the leading program by offering the highest level of education and training, thereby enabling future scientists to be at the cutting edge of international biomedical research. While Yonsei University College of Medicine prides itself on providing state-of-the-art care to patients throughout its more than 100-year history, it is through biomedical research and the nurturing of new researchers that this institute has been able to positively impact the field of medicine. The most essential elements of the project are to design and run multidisciplinary training programs, offer tuition assistance, provide state-of-theart experimental equipment, and cover travel expenses for our researchers to travel abroad and connect with researchers from around the world. At the forefront of biomedical research in Korea, the Brain Korea 21 Project for Medical Science will continue to focus on making medical breakthroughs. Goals To establish a graduate program that fosters creative, multidisciplinary and interdepartmental biomedical research that benefits the next generation of scientists. To support and promote research to cure human diseases. To improve the quality of research and ensure the institute s excellence in the medical science field. 4 5

The Molecular Genetics and Pathology research team focuses on the molecular biological aspects of liver diseases, gastrointestinal cancers, brain tumors and atherosclerosis as cardiovascular diseases. Nineteen professors comprise this team, which is further divided into 4 sub-groups. Molecular Genetics & Pathology Team 22, Mechanism of liver disease research Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) usually occurs during the cirrhosis phase of the chronic inflammatory process, and hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C viruses are its main causes. Recently, evidence supporting the theory of a multistep process of human hepatocarcinogenesis has been growing. Our team focuses its studies on the molecular pathogenesis of multistep hepatocarcinogenesis, including precancerous lesions and cancer stem cells, hepatitis viruses (B and C) and hepatic fibrogenesis. We believe that these studies will help to develop new techniques for preventing and treating chronic liver diseases and HCC. Molecular Genetics & Pathology Team 23, Cardiovascular disease research Team 23 focuses on the analysis of genetic factors involved in atherosclerosis by applying genetic polymorphism of cardiovascular related genes. We believe that these studies will help to develop new techniques for preventing and treating the diseases by predicting the risk factors of cardiovascular diseases. Molecular Genetics & Pathology Team 24, Brain tumor research Team 24 studies the pathogenic mechanisms of brain tumors and emphasizes re-classifying brain tumors according to their molecular and biological characteristics. The ultimate goal of Team 24 is to develop new treatment strategies for brain tumors based on such biological and molecular data. Molecular Genetics & Pathology Team 25, Biomarkers of gastrointestinal tract cancers Many diseases are known to originate from genetic changes. Therefore, by studying and identifying the related genetic mutations, we can develop techniques for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of the diseases based on such genetic information. Team 25 aims to find the specific biomarkers for gastrointestinal tract tumors that will aid the early diagnosis of gastrointestinal tract cancers
