2 A LETTER FROM KOMEN DALLAS COUNTY BOARD PRESIDENT TERRI SWAIN When you hear the words you have cancer, life as you know it turns upside down. You do not think there could be anything worse as you start imagining your children without a mother. As a two-time breast cancer survivor, who s lost a mother a sister to cancer, I ve gone through the ups downs of The Big C although it was devastating, in so many ways I was lucky. Lucky because I had health insurance, education, transportation an amazing support system - things many of us take for granted. As I went through my treatment I was grateful to have access to the best brightest s healthcare could offer me. But all around me, there were people in my own community who did not. Women unnecessarily dying suffering because their cancer was not discovered when it was treatable. Why? Because they lost a job did not have health insurance; they did not underst about early detection; or did not have a support system; or their culture did not encourage them to take charge of their own health. I hope you will join me in my support of the County Affiliate of Susan G. Komen. Seventy-five percent of the net funds raised stay in our community to help women families in County receive lifesaving education, screening mammograms treatment. Last year, our efforts translated into more than $2 million for County. On behalf of the families in our community; the over 1,200 volunteers who donate their time to make a difference; on behalf of the Board of Directors who assure good stewardship of your contributions, we thank you for making a difference with us. Regards, Terri Swain
