The Asia/Pacific region is vast with both developed and developing economies and is a region that offers great opportunities. Within the region there are countries with some of the highest GDPs in the world, it has the highest economic growth. The largest potential for surfactant demand is in the Asia/Pacific region, where production of both consumer and industrial products advance at superior rates to other regional markets. Surfactant producers, who have been hit hard by the recession of recent years, are looking for ways to increase sales, expand market shares, and improve profits. The Asia/Pacific region offers many opportunities, but detailed market knowledge and insights are needed in order to take advantage of them. The area of Southeast Asia is diverse with countries showing a range of development. In some respects, surfactant opportunities are more attractive than other parts of Asia due to the rate of growth, level of development and level of competition. Abundant feedstocks and raw materials offer great promise but the region is not underdeveloped. Picking opportunities is a complex task and requires full knowledge of the field. Colin A. This segment on Southeast Asia will detail surfactant and intermediate producers and production; end use markets, trends and growth by country and application, and surfactant consumption by country, type and end use for It will also provide annual forecasts for 2004 through 2007, and a longer-term forecast to The scope of the study and other details are explained on the following pages. 2 DESCRIPTION OF THE STUDY CAHA s new study is designed to help surfactant and intermediate producers take advantage of growth opportunities in the Southeast Asian countries by providing detailed data and intelligent analysis of specific end use and country markets. CAHA has studied surfactants, intermediates and oleochemicals in this region for over twenty years and has extensive background and excellent contacts among surfactant and intermediate producers, formulators and customers in this region. New data will be developed through telephone calls and personal interviews with suppliers and customers. This comprehensive new study will address the key aspects of the Southeast Asian market for surfactants. Below is a discussion of each chapter of the study. I. INTRODUCTION This chapter begins the study with an assessment of the economic conditions and political factors underlying the growth and shaping the development of each country in the region. It will also examine the impact of regional trade agreements such as AFTA as well as specific developments such as China s accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO). II. SURFACTANT INTERMEDIATES Surfactant intermediates play a very important role in the structure of the surfactant market in the Asia/Pacific region. This chapter covers intermediate producers, capacities and integration; production; and market trends and issues. It will provide insights on issues such as the intercompetition of petrochemical and oleo alcohols; the availability of merchant ethylene oxide; the role of export production and the outlook for local consumption. III. MAJOR SURFACTANTS This chapter addresses the primary surfactants and presents complete, up-todate tables of ethoxylators and sulfators/sulfonators with their locations and capacities. It details technology, utilization and consumption for each of six major surfactant types: alkylbenzene sulfonates, alcohol sulfates, alcohol ethoxysulfates, alcohol ethoxylates, alkylphenol ethoxylates, and quaternary ammonium compounds. 2 COLIN A. END MARKET OVERVIEWS AND CONSUMPTION BY REGION This chapter will detail end use product technology and discuss applications and trends at the regional level, and its relationship to global trends. For example, it will discuss the implications for LABS, AOS and MES as alternative surfactant platforms for laundry products. It will also pull together the surfactant data from the individual country surveys in order to provide total regional surfactant consumption by type and application. V. COUNTRY SURVEYS In order to understand the Southeast Asia region and its players both surfactant customers and surfactant producers, an analysis of each country is required. 14 QUALIFICATIONS AND PERSONNEL Colin A. Houston & Associates, Inc. was founded in 1971 to provide consulting services to the chemical industry worldwide. The primary area of expertise is surfactants: raw materials, intermediates, major surfactants, and the surfactant-consuming industries. Other areas of activity include: a variety of industry studies on such topics as oilfield chemicals, detergent builders, ingredients for personal care products, and bleaching agents; engineering studies such as a worldwide study of glycerine evaporation plants with recommendations for improved efficiency; a world study of the state of the art in spraydrying detergents; contracts with the U.S. Government to develop industry effluent guidelines; and business strategy and acquisition studies. The reputation thus earned by CAHA for comprehensive, high quality techno-economic and market analyses has led to a variety of engineering, marketing, and strategic planning studies for individual clients in North America, West Europe, Asia/Pacific, the Middle East and Africa. CAHA has been studying global markets for surfactant intermediates and surfactants for over 30 years. In 1994, CAHA published Asia/Pacific Surfactants, its first comprehensive multiclient study specifically on the Asia/Pacific region. Ms. Bradshaw has a B.A. from Finch College and an economics and management certificate from Manhattanville College. She is an active member of CDMA. Greg M. Boughey, Vice President, Before joining CAHA, he was employed at Crompton Corporation (formerly Uniroyal Chemical and Witco Corporation) where he held the position of Global Market Manager for several specialty chemical business units including antioxidants, foaming agents and plastic additives. Before that he spent more than 18 years with UOP, a LLC of Honeywell and Dow Corporations. Mr. Boughey s last position at UOP was as Market Segment Manager for olefins and derivatives. He had the responsibility for the worldwide marketing, strategic planning and sales support for UOP s Detergents Business Unit. Mr. Boughey graduated from the University of Louisville with a MEng and BS in Chemical Engineering. He also has his MBA from Kellogg Graduate School of Management - Northwestern University. H. James Bigalow, Senior Research Associate, authored the Paper and Textiles end use sections of our multiclient studies INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS OF SURFACTANTS - NORTH AMERICAN FORECAST TO 2010 and SURFACTANTS FOR EMERGING MARKETS IN ASIA/PACIFIC, , and has worked on a series of proprietary detergent and surfactant studies.
