14 RNA interference (RNAi) RNA silencing has a pivotal role in the regulation of development, genome stability, and responses to biotic and abiotic stresses through controlling gene expression. RNAi is a natural mechanism in all organisms that can regulate gene expression. RNAi could play a major role in improvement of all crops, including canola. One of several gene editing technologies that can be used to improve crops for enhanced food, feed and fibre production.

16 Canola Oil Nutrition Research Key Findings Canola oil and high oleic canola oil are equally effective in reducing LDL-cholesterol. DHA enriched canola oil significantly increases HDL cholesterol, decreases LDL cholesterol, and significantly reduces blood triglycerides and inflammation. Canola oil and high oleic canola oil reduce abdominal fat in comparison with a control oil blend. In individuals with type 2 diabetes, canola oil improved glycemic control and heart health parameters and lead to weight loss.
17 Canola Oil Nutrition Current Research Continued focus on heart disease and diabetes. Ongoing work on canola oil and metabolic syndrome. Further investigation of link between canola oil and weight control/body fat reduction. Gene expression impact of canola oil consumption on the regulation of genes regulating cholesterol and fat metabolism.
18 Future Opportunities Oil Nutrition Canola oil containing fish-oil like levels of essential long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, such as EPA & DHA Cardiovascular & brain health. Alleviate pressure on global fish populations. Several institutions and companies have demonstrated proof of concept & genes are stable in canola.
