6 Thursday 6 th July A number of our authors will be visiting schools and groups of schools during the day, but due to high demand, no further places are available. Thursday evening 6 th July: pm (WP Plenary Hall) Official opening and reception for the 2017 AATE ALEA National Conference, Cutting Edge: margin to mainstream Opening address Dr Danielle Wood The Cutting Edge inside ourselves - Why new technologies are not always the answer Even as we fall in love with new technologies and the miracles of connection they can deliver, many of us feel an increasing sense of division as we are forced both as students and as teachers to spend more and more time with our computer screens, and less with the human beings around us. In her address, writer and university lecturer Danielle Wood considers where the cutting edge really lies when it comes to teaching and learning in the deeply human disciplines of English and creative writing. 6
7 Throughout the conference Copyright Agency Cultural Fund sponsored Litfest Master Class authors will be presenting at various sessions over the course of the event. Friday 7 th July: am and pm Book Signings and pre-launch of the new title in the Felix series: Morris Gleitzman Also Julie Koh will be available for book signings. Friday 7 th July: am pm (Derwent Room 3) Benjamin Law: Story of my Life Writing about your life can be one of the most satisfying and fun things for students to do, however, it can also be a minefield of ethics and craft too. Columnist and author of the memoir The Family Law (now an SBS TV show), Benjamin Law will chat to teachers about some tricks you can use to help students explore their experiences, identify interesting elements of their lives interesting and elevate it from a Wikipedia entry to an actual story. Saturday 8 th July: am Literary Breakfasts x two Angela Meyer (Pier One Private Dining Room) Aspects of culture, which may have previously been considered marginal, are moving into the mainstream. What power and responsibility do we have, as cultural gatekeepers, educators, or even just as everyday people, in ensuring a greater balance of voices and stories are heard, written, read, and taught? Leigh Hobbs (The Green Room) Leigh s breakfast session combines his experience of 25 years of secondary school art teaching - as in surviving it - only just... combined with his work as an artist / author and producer of 21 children s books...18 of which are in print. 7
8 Saturday 8 th July (cont.) Will Kostakis Saturday am (Wellington 2) Bring Out Your Best One of the biggest barriers to students enjoying creative writing is thinking that their stories aren't good enough. Award-winning author Will Kostakis guides secondary teachers, particularly graduate and proficient teachers, through a collaborative and engaging editing exercise they can replicate with their students to help bring out their best. Angela Meyer Saturday am pm (Plenary Hall) Flash Fiction Very short stories have been around a long time. Kafka, Woolf and Hemingway all have stories that can be read in a matter of minutes. But flash fiction happens to be a friendly form for people who ve grown up in the age of the Internet. This workshop will encourage you (and your students) to delight in brevity, and allow you to experiment with notions of character, conflict and resolution, and evocation of place and mood, in few words. Sunday 9 9h July Finegan Kruckemeyer Sunday am (Wellington Room) Out of Character They begin as an outline. Then features form, histories are built, futures invented. From these first silhouettes, characters will come to life and finally, the world which might hold them. Replicating techniques taught to thousands in schools, universities and writing groups worldwide, build the beginnings of a play from the protagonist out. 8
