1 1 IAC CHAPTER 36 NEWSLETTER October, 2002 Michael Church BORREGO SPRINGS AKROFEST The 2002 California contest season ended Saturday afternoon, October 12, at about 5 PM. As the last echo of Ty Frisby s S1 died away, scorers raced to compile results and volunteers expended the last possible surge of energy to tear everything down they worked so hard to put up only three days earlier-- no scores until it s put away. In the restaurant, pilots reviewed critique sheets, some smiling, some not, while outside, a few others packed up and flew home. In time, everybody still on the scene limped back to their hotel rooms to make repairs and get ready for the party. It was a good contest. Gary Meermans and Dick Stonehouse came through in fine style as co-directors: hardly a glitch in sight. We had lunches, port-a-potties, water, tents, chairs, tables, ice, cookies, a permit, afterhours fuel, insurance, contest ads, signs, a banquet (and a place to have it), radios, tech inspection, box markers--and a few more items I can t think of. And they both flew. Chapter 36 usually has competent directors--these two stood out even in that crowd. John Ryan, who isn t even thinking of opening his new steakhouse until December, threw open the doors of the airport restaurant and made us so welcome it became hard to leave. Chief Judge Mariylnn Holland drove over from Arizona and ran the whole thing, always graceful, always without apparent effort, despite working three categories. So efficient were Registrar Joanne Johnson s precontest efforts she missed predicting the total number of contestants by fewer than ten. We had 46 in all, and every one of them had the right paperwork at the right time. Barbara Church did her customary great job as Volunteer Coordinator: organized, efficient and persuasive. When it seemed hopeless, she magically got volunteers to appear at the last possible moment to save the day. The result? No delays attributed to missing or absent personnel. Barb might not have known everyone s name at the start, but I think by the end she had even their birthdays nailed. Hal Raish made it all move at the starter s position. Even with an hour wind delay on Friday, he got it all done--every category, every flight. Contrary to the belief of some, we have lots of friends in town. On those lines, here s a good story: at 9:30 AM Sat, Barb Church went to the Center Market to pick up supplies and the woman behind the counter began to tell her about this neat stuff going on at the airport: "I think they start at 10, you ought to go!" Barb explained her connection and said "Hey, we've been flying for almost two hours already." And the lady replied, "I didn't know- -we haven't heard a thing. You can put off your Judge s Written until mid- October--until Thursday afternoon before the contest, in fact--and still make the grade by Friday morning. You cannot revive beheaded traffic cones with CPR. On that note, Marilyn Dash wrote to congratulate us on the contest and to say she thinks frequently of dear departed Gomez (photos below), especially when she passes members of his extended family, just sitting by the side of the road with nothing to do. Eva Zoboki and Barb Hill entered scores, made corrections and published results on schedule. Even when it became necessary to re-enter every contestants penalties from Friday s flights, the work stayed on track--no complaints, just products. Even the contest jury got to work. When it was over, we had learned a few things: Decathlons can win Intermediate--in the right hands.maybe what IAC says about clipped-wing Cubs is really true... Unlimited pilots are lots of fun to watch right after Nationals: they are on their game. Our corner sight devices really need to be rebuilt. The bonus system makes it possible to score more than 100%--even if the software hasn t caught up with displaying the results correctly. Jon, Mike and Julie all scored better than 99.99% on their Frees. You can fly every maneuver outside the box and still not get a single out. The protest system works--sort of. 3 3 The Kathy Jafee Award On Permanent Display at IAC/EAA Headquarters Joanne Johnson Honored with Kathy Jaffe Award In late September, the IAC announced its selection of Joanne Johnson, long time Chapter 36 Registrar volunteer, for this year s Kathy Jaffe Award. In the words of the IAC, this award recognizes an outstanding volunteer during the previous year. The award was donated in memory of Kathleen Jaffe. Her spirit and enthusiasm for aerobatics and the aerobatic community were truly remarkable. She was president of IAC Chapter 52, contest director, newsletter editor, and contributor to Sport Aerobatics magazine. Kathy also gave lectures to everyone from aviation related groups to schoolchildren on the joy of flying and especially aerobatics. She was also a competition pilot. She died in Joanne was unable to travel to Nationals to receive her award in person; Jon Nash picked up the handsome crystal trophy in Texas and brought it back to California, unscathed. Contest Directors Gary and Dick made the presentation at the Akrofest Awards Banquet. It was great to see Joanne receive recognition for her wonderful contributions to Chapter 36 and the sport.
